Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 140: Suspected of Trafficking Women
Rosalind felt a strange chill down her spine, but recalling what Haylie had just said, she became excited again, "Brother, there’s news about Cece."
Mason’s grip on the pen tightened, almost piercing through the paper. He looked at Rosalind with a sullen gaze, "Where?"
"Crestview Apartments, 17th floor, Room 03," Rosalind quickly replied, "Haylie just called to tell me. She said Cece has been cohabiting with Zayne Warner, and that apartment is Zayne’s private property."
"Haylie? Didn’t she despise you? Why did she tell you this on her own accord?" Mason looked at her suspiciously.
Rosalind thought for a moment, "Maybe she still wants to mend things with Zayne? If Cece’s by Zayne’s side, she’s in her way."
Mason gave her a glance, "Not too stupid after all."
He paused and continued, "I know about this. You can leave now."
Rosalind hesitated for a moment, "Brother, aren’t you going to fetch that woman now? She’s much worse than Elara. No matter what, Elara didn’t jump on you before divorcing, right? But Cece..."
Mason interrupted her, his tone laced with a slight warning, "I said you can leave now."
Rosalind’s body stiffened. Fearfully, she nodded and then turned to leave.
The moment the study door closed, Mason could no longer control himself. He fiercely threw the pen against the wall!
His expression was violent, leaning on the table with both hands, gritting his teeth, "I’m not dead yet, and she dares to cohabit with another man?!"
"Slut! How did I not see you being this kind of a woman?"
"Do you think by latching onto the Warner Family, I can’t do anything to you? No matter how powerful the Warner Family is, they won’t cause a scandal over a married woman!"
"Cece, just wait for me," Mason’s lips curled into a cruel smile, "Wait till I get you back. A family, of course, should be together entirely."
Inside Zayne Warner’s apartment.
The afternoon ended awkwardly, and Cece painstakingly prepared a few dishes for dinner.
Zayne received a call, looking at her with guilt, "Cece, there’s something at the company, I need to head over immediately, I’m sorry... your efforts will be wasted."
Cece was taken aback, feeling uncomfortable inside. Previously, no matter what, he always prioritized her, but now, a minor company issue could pull him away...
She gently bit her lip, eyes filled with reluctance, she said softly, "Alright... go ahead, Senior Warner, I wish you all the best with your work and family... everything."
The last words came with a hint of choking, her eyes reddened as she forced a smile as if nothing had happened.
Zayne noticed her oddness at a glance, coupled with what she said, his heart tightened, and he hurriedly asked, "Cece, why are you saying this? Are you... planning to leave?"
Cece’s tears fell unexpectedly, then she gently shook her head, holding back sobs, she smiled bitterly, "I’ve been intruding on you for long enough. What are we even doing? I was greedy, clinging to the warmth you gave. I couldn’t bear to just leave, but after seeing Miss Sommers today, I somehow had a moment of clarity. I can’t hold you back anymore. You’re a good man, with me by your side, you can never truly accept another woman, Senior Warner, you were kind to me, and I to you... I just hope everything goes well for you."
Zayne’s eyes flickered with a tremor, and his eyes reddened too. He held her in his arms with heartache, "Cece, I’m not afraid of you holding me back. I just want to take care of you. You don’t know how happy I’d be if you’d give me the chance to care for you."
His voice was choked up with genuine emotion, and Cece felt a slight sense of fulfillment in her heart, recognizing she still had her charms of the past.
Senior Warner still loved her.
She lifted her head, touched by his words, tears fell like pearls. Her hands gently clutched Zayne’s shirt as if she had made up her mind, "Senior Warner, if you’re willing, I’d like to be with you. I like you, I want... I want to be your wife."
But Zayne’s body went stiff. He looked at Cece, eyes full of affection, but his lips moved without responding to her declaration.
All he managed was a hesitant call, "Cece..."
Cece’s heart sank, a bad premonition flashed in her mind.
These days, she has been playing hard to get with Zayne, yet he never gave her a definitive response. But after seeing Haylie today, she couldn’t hold back any longer. She feared someone might take Zayne away from her.
This man was her only card now, she had to hold on tight, not allowing another woman to take advantage.
That’s why she personally cooked, dressed up, and pierced the veil of ambiguity with Zayne, expecting an exuberant response, but faced with his reaction, she was taken aback.
Did he not love her anymore? But if he didn’t love her, why did he look at her with such pain?
Cece gritted her teeth, decisively pushed him away, taking a step back with a bitter smile, "Senior Warner, you don’t need to say it, I understand what you mean. It was my fault for having those thoughts, I’m sorry, I won’t make things difficult for you anymore. I’ll pack my things and leave now."
With that said, she turned to pack her luggage.
Zayne grabbed her hand, filled with agony, "Cece, don’t go, I can’t bear to let you go..."
Cece shuddered, turning back after a while, with a hint of harshness in her voice, "Senior Warner, what do you want? You know how I feel... I thought you also... but if you don’t love me, why not let me go?"
She held back her tears, turning her gaze away, speaking softly, "I’m not insensitive. I don’t want to get into a vague relationship. You should understand me. I’ve always been plain and straightforward. If you don’t love me, I won’t cling to you. Let me go."
Zayne couldn’t hold back anymore. He pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly as if he wanted to meld her into his body.
At this point, he could only be truthful.
"Cece, I’m sorry, I can’t marry you, nor give you a socially recognized open relationship," his large hand tightened on her back, he closed his eyes, speaking the painful truth, "My family won’t allow it. The Warner Family has been in the military for three generations. I can’t disregard my family for personal feelings. It’s my greed, Cece, I’m sorry, I’ve caused you trouble..."
Upon hearing this, Cece was infuriated.
You knew from the start you couldn’t marry me, why approach me at all? I was already prepared to divorce Mason and marry you, yet now you say you can’t disregard your family?
Why put on such a deep and fake facade?
She gritted her teeth, her body trembling slightly, taking a deep breath, she mockingly laughed, "So that’s how it is... I understand..."
She pushed Zayne away, her back facing him, "Since it’s like this, we shouldn’t hold each other back any longer. You’ll eventually marry someone else, and keeping me by your side... do you want me to be the mistress?"
Zayne hurried to explain, "Cece, I didn’t mean it that way..."
Cece shook her head, smiling bitterly, "I won’t be the mistress. It’s unfair to you, unfair to me, and even more unfair to your future wife. There’s no future for us, so it’s better to end it early."
Zayne’s eyes flickered with a struggle. He truly wanted to choose her against all odds, but the ingrained values he grew up with wouldn’t allow him.
Perhaps what Cece said was right; ending it is the best choice for them.
After a long time, he finally opened his mouth with extreme pain, "Alright, but before that, let me protect you for one last period. The Jacobs family’s issues haven’t been resolved. At least wait until you get divorced, and I settle you down before we cut ties completely. Otherwise, you’re just a weak woman. How will you survive?"
Cecilia’s body stiffened.
She intended to retreat strategically, trying to push Zayne Warner, but didn’t expect him to actually agree?
His so-called love turned out to be so cheap?
And settle her down—was settling her what she wanted? She wanted to marry into The Warner Family and become Mrs. Warner!
She bit her lip, deliberately speaking harshly, "How I live will have nothing to do with you in the future."
Zayne Warner embraced her from behind, "Cece, don’t say that, my heart is about to break..."
Cecilia snorted inwardly, realizing that at the end of the day, in his heart, she was dispensable, whereas his family and position were what he had to protect no matter what.
But she couldn’t just give up like this. She couldn’t return to the Jacobs family. She didn’t want to see that lunatic Mason Jacobs anymore. Zayne Warner was her only hope now; she had to hold onto him tightly.
Just as she was about to speak again, there was a sudden banging at the door, and a stranger’s voice solemnly sounded, "Is anyone home? Open the door!"
Cecilia shrank back in fear, just in time to be held tightly in Zayne Warner’s arms. He whispered comfortingly, "Don’t be scared, it’s okay, I’ll go have a look."
Cecilia nodded anxiously, watching Zayne Warner’s back. In her heart, she somewhat hoped it was someone from The Warner Family. If The Warner Family knew about the unclear relationship between him and her, they’d surely reprimand him harshly and force him to send her away.
That could instead push him towards her.
In Cecilia’s anticipation, Zayne Warner opened the door.
Unexpectedly, at the door were several policemen. After showing their IDs, the police said, "Zayne Warner, right? We received a report that you’re suspected of trafficking women. This is a search warrant. Step aside; we need to search inside!"
Zayne Warner asked in confusion, "Me? Trafficking women? It must be a mistake, I didn’t do such a thing."
The police pushed past him into the room and immediately saw Cecilia, questioning, "Who is this?"
Zayne Warner hurriedly said, "We know each other; this is my..."
Before he could say the word "friend," Cecilia interrupted him.
Cecilia also displayed a shy smile, "Officer, you’ve really made a mistake. I’m his cohabitating girlfriend, how could it involve trafficking women?"
The policemen exchanged glances, none speaking.
Meanwhile, a figure slowly approached outside, step by step coming to stand before Cecilia.
"When did my wife become Mr. Warner’s cohabitating girlfriend?"
Cecilia looked at the man in front of her in horror, taking a step back in alarm.
How could it be Mason Jacobs? How did he find this place?
Mason Jacobs wore a gentle smile, like a lover caught in a deep romantic trance, extending his hand to Cecilia gently, "I know he tricked you; it wasn’t your wish, right? Cece, come here."
Cecilia’s heart raced, beads of nervous sweat forming on her back. After being tormented by Mason Jacobs to death not long ago, she knew all too well his true nature. He’s a lunatic!
All his elegance and wealth are just appearances! He’s like a demon hiding in the shadows, capable of taking her life on a whim!
Cecilia, overwhelmed with fear, instinctively hid behind Zayne Warner.
Then Mason Jacobs suddenly reached out, grabbing her arm and pulling her to his side, smiling as he asked, "What means did he use on you? I’m here, yet you still can’t part from him. Cece, you’ve hurt me deeply."
His gaze was so gentle, his voice so affectionate, yet one hand openly held her arm, while the other pressed a knife firmly against her waist!
As he spoke, the knife slowly pressed forward, puncturing her skin.
"Ah..." Cecilia groaned in pain.
The next second, she swallowed her cry of pain because Mason Jacobs whispered in her ear with the gentlest voice, "Be good and come back with me; your brother and your parents are waiting for you."
Cecilia’s body shook, a fleeting struggle evident in her eyes as she looked at Zayne Warner in despair.
Mason Jacobs had captured her parents and her brother, and they were at immediate risk... But even if she went back with Mason Jacobs, would he spare them? It would only be adding one more life to the count...
But if Zayne Warner could find a way to keep her, and then look for an opportunity to rescue her family, there might still be a glimmer of hope...
Pressed by Mason Jacobs with a knife, she dared not say anything, managing only to look at Zayne Warner with eyes full of endless pleading.
Zayne Warner, seeing the captive Cecilia, felt as if his heart was being cut by a knife; a bold and heroic spirit rose within him, stepping forward to confront Mason Jacobs, he said coldly,
"Let her go!"
Mason Jacobs chuckled, amused, "Mr. Warner, be clear about your status. Cece is my wife. She’s been held by you here for half a month, driving me mad with worry. Right now, you’re under suspicion of trafficking women. In front of the police, is it not too arrogant for you to behave like this toward me?"
Zayne Warner’s pupils contracted; even if he was naive, he now understood that Mason Jacobs had set him up. Cecilia was Mason Jacobs’s wife, yet she had been hidden here for half a month. Although he believed the police would clear his name after investigating, if this matter blew up, it would bring endless shame to the family.
He was an upstanding second-generation military officer and couldn’t ignore such matters.
Perhaps letting Mason Jacobs take Cecilia away quietly was the best choice.
But...
Reluctantly, he looked at Cecilia’s tear-stricken face, his heart wrenching with sorrow.
At that moment, his phone rang; it was his father calling.
He had just answered when he heard Walter Warner’s furious voice, "You’re simply causing trouble! The Warner Family is filled with loyalty and honor, never stained with the slightest blemish. And what have you done? Getting photographed in close proximity with that woman was bad enough. Now you’ve stashed her in your place. She’s someone else’s wife, did you know that? Because of you, your grandfather has been summoned for a talk by his superiors. You’ve disgraced The Warner Family completely! Send that woman away immediately while there’s still time!"
A moment later, Zayne Warner hung up the call with a pallid expression.
