Chapter 13: Chapter 13: The Anonymous Text from Three Months Ago

Elara explained, "Even close siblings have to keep financial accounts clear, let alone you’re divorcing my dad. I promised to give you the money, and you won’t get a penny less, but this ten thousand dollars, you mentioned before, is a security deposit, so I think it’s better to clarify it upfront."

Pausing a moment, she then looked at Auntie Yvette, "Even though we’ve signed a contract, if you don’t take care of my dad within three months, you’ll have to return the money intact.

But the contract also stipulates that the longer your marriage with my dad lasts after three months, the less you’ll have to pay back.

If you don’t divorce, then you won’t have to return the money.

Auntie Yvette, the contract is in your favor."

Recently, Yvette Sommers was exhausted by the issues at Aidan Sommers’ school; she didn’t have much time left and she needed to get the ten thousand dollars today.

Calculating a little, she decided she wouldn’t lose out anyway, so she simply signed her name.

As for returning the money later, ha, was she really afraid of being manipulated by a little girl?

Elara transferred the money to Yvette Sommers, then went upstairs to check on her dad. Seeing that her dad was well, she felt at ease, bid her dad goodbye, and left.

She had just walked a few steps when she received a call from her friend Esther Carter, whose usual rowdy tone hadn’t changed, "Elara, I’m back with the crew for a day’s shoot and leaving tomorrow morning. Shall we meet tonight?"

Elara was a bit surprised and agreed readily, "Sure, is Zara Dalton free?"

Esther Carter scoffed, "I’ll call him later. He’ll have to make time even if he doesn’t have any! It’s not often I can spare a day, he’d better be free!"

Elara chuckled, "Okay, you contact him."

An hour later, the three of them met in a private room in a high-end club downtown.

Elara put her bag on the sofa and looked at Zara Dalton, who was holding a microphone for karaoke, expressing amazement, "Your credit card is suspended, yet you dare to choose a place like this for gathering."

Esther Carter opened a bottle of wine for her, knowing she couldn’t handle her liquor well, specially choosing fruit wine, and laughed, "That’s why they call them trust fund kids, only a thousand bucks left but still daring to spend over two thousand for a suite overnight."

Zara Dalton waved his hand, explaining, "You guys don’t know, I specifically chose a place under my family’s business. After having fun, I just put it on the tab, everything here is on credit."

Esther Carter gave him a thumbs-up, "Your shamelessness is unparalleled."

Zara Dalton stylishly tousled his hair, "That’s why I’m such a charmer."

Elara laughed uncontrollably, feeling a bit lighter from her recent bottled-up emotions.

Suddenly, Zara Dalton shifted the topic, "By the way, Elara, why didn’t you bring that arranged-marriage husband today?"

Elara shook her head, "We agreed to divorce once the adoption procedures on my end are sorted. Whether you meet him or not doesn’t really matter."

Esther Carter nodded, "True, anyway, he’s just a tool, used and then tossed aside."

She suddenly paused, staring at Elara’s wrist in surprise, "Since when did you start buying jade? This bracelet’s quality is exceptional, cold and translucent; how did you afford such an expensive item?"

Elara laughed and explained, "I went back with Zion Fitzwilliam yesterday to meet his family, and his grandmother gave it to me. It’s not genuine, just a small token from an elderly lady."

Esther Carter exclaimed, "Fake?"

She grabbed Elara’s wrist, inspecting it back and forth, "There’s a little cotton inside, doesn’t seem fake."

Elara replied, "Maybe the fake craftsmanship has gotten too good?"

Esther Carter didn’t know much about jade, but her mother, when alive, loved buying jade, and through her, she picked up a little knowledge.

If her friend’s bracelet were real, it would be worth at least tens of millions.

Who in their right mind would give such a valuable gift? And besides, that man is in sales, his family can’t be that wealthy.

So she nodded, agreeing with Elara’s guess, "Maybe." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Zara Dalton wasn’t interested in jade, leaned over to ask, "You mentioned earlier you wanted to sue Mason Jacobs, what’s that about?"

Elara’s smile faded, she sighed and briefly explained what had happened outside the Jacobs’ Family house earlier.

Esther Carter’s temper flared up instantly upon hearing it, "That scumbag, he still dares to make things difficult for you?!"

Zara Dalton frowned and said, "The Jacobs Family’s legal team is formidable, how about I help you find a lawyer? Even if you don’t win, it’s better than being at someone’s mercy."

Mentioning this made Elara also a bit annoyed, "Zion Fitzwilliam has a friend who just got his lawyer’s license; he wants to use this opportunity to let his friend get some practice, saying if the lawsuit is lost, he’ll pay the compensation."

Esther Carter was shocked, "Is he brain-dead, using a newbie against the Jacobs Family? Compensation of hundreds of thousands is no joke."

Zara Dalton, however, seemed to understand, spoke meaningfully, "Don’t forget he’s gay, he and that friend of his..."

Elara hesitated and nodded, "That’s probably it."

Zara Dalton and Esther Carter cried out in excitement together.

"Who understands, a top salesperson and a newbie lawyer, it’s a thrilling pair!"

"So pampered!"

The three marveled at the passionate resolve and then Esther Carter suddenly asked, "By the way, Elara, didn’t you mention finding the person who sent you those anonymous texts, did you?"

Bringing this up deflated Elara, "That phone number is always unreachable, and I later checked it at the telecom office, still no progress."

Over three months ago, she received an anonymous text, saying Mason Jacobs was cheating.

Initially, she didn’t believe it, but later, that number sent her another message, just a hotel name and room number. Out of suspicion, she went over, only to catch Mason Jacobs and Cecilia Quincy in that room.

Her marriage with Mason Jacobs began to fall apart from that day.

She always wanted to know who sent her that message, unfortunately, she’s unable to find any clues.

Esther Carter gulped half a bottle of beer like it was water and then said, "Anyone with access to Mason Jacobs’ schedule must be someone close to him. You don’t have any friends in the Jacobs Family, maybe it was Cecilia Quincy staging this whole thing!"

Elara didn’t deny it, thinking it was possible for Cecilia Quincy to push her to divorce using such a method.

She forced a bitter smile and didn’t want to dwell in painful emotions anymore, shaking her head, "Let’s not talk about this. How’s your acting career going recently?"

Esther Carter let out a big sigh, "Don’t ask, I finally fought for a supporting role, but the assistant director wanted me to sleep with him. I slapped him twice, and then the role was snatched away, so I had to go back to being an extra."

Elara had long heard about the murky sides of the entertainment industry, she could only comfort, "They’re losing out by not hiring you, your acting skills are amazing, you’ll make it big one day."

Esther Carter was filled with a surge of ambition, "Exactly, when I win awards in the future, I won’t even acknowledge them as they beg with money!"

Elara raised her wine glass, "Come on, a toast to the future superstar!"

The three raised their glasses in unison, shouting their slogan, "To the future superstar!"

Elara’s phone suddenly rang, she glanced down to see a number she knew too well.

She had deleted Mason Jacobs’ contact information on the day of their divorce, so the caller ID showed no name.

She watched that string of numbers dancing on her phone screen and after a moment, pressed decline.
