When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds-Chapter 40: The Grand Lottery Wheel
Han Tingting trusted Tan You completely; all of her assets were managed by Tan You. Of course, to outsiders, it just looked like Han Tingting herself was a brilliant financial manager. Nearly everyone in the Yang family entrusted their money to her.
To everyone, Han Tingting had truly won at life. She was beautiful, had married well, and was exceptional in her own right. With a son, a daughter, and a harmonious family, she had it all. Though the first decade or so of her life had been difficult, everything afterward was smooth sailing.
One afternoon, as Han Tingting was leaving the factory, she brushed past a man while looking down to text. His tool bag snagged her wrist, causing her phone to drop to the ground.
"I’m so sorry... How much was the phone? I’ll pay for it," the man apologized profusely, bending down to pick up her phone and hand it to her.
Han Tingting froze when she heard his voice. When she saw his face clearly, she stood there, stunned.
"Miss, I’m so sorry, your screen is shattered. Let me pay for it?" Staring at the spiderweb of cracks on the screen, Zhou Jin cursed his rotten luck. ’How could I have been so careless?’
"No, it’s alright. I wasn’t watching where I was going," Han Tingting said, taking the phone. "It was my fault too. You don’t have to pay for it."
She glanced at his tool bag. "Are you... here to..."
"Oh, I’m a repair technician from the manufacturer. I have an appointment with the director at three... Sorry, but if you’re sure you don’t need me to pay for the phone, I have to go calibrate the machinery."
Zhou Jin gave Han Tingting one last look before quickly turning and jogging into the factory compound. Han Tingting stared after his retreating figure, lost in thought.
Tan You suddenly materialized beside her. "His son is eight, two years older than yours."
Han Tingting shrugged. "It’s not that I still have feelings for him. I was just caught off guard. I never expected to see him under these circumstances. It’s strange... I didn’t feel anything at all when I saw him."
"Back then... maybe we had something good when we first got together, but things grew duller over time. Perhaps it was because the burdens of family life became heavier. We never argued, but we both just felt... tired."
"Things are good now. We each have our own lives, and I no longer have to be mentally and physically exhausted by all the trivial matters from back then." 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
She glanced up at the deep blue sky and sighed. "It really is great to have money."
"What’s so great?" Yang Kun’s car pulled up right in front of her, and he had just caught her remark.
Han Tingting got in the car. "I was just saying how great it is to have money. So many of the world’s problems stem from a lack of it. We may not be as famous as other tycoons, but I’m already very happy with the way things are."
"As long as you’re happy," Yang Kun smiled. "Should we go pick up our oldest from school? He’ll be thrilled to see us both there for him."
Whenever Han Tingting and Yang Kun were together, Tan You made a point not to intrude. In this world, only Han Tingting knew she existed, a little secret shared between them.
The couple spoke in hushed tones. From the back seat, a little girl shook her pigtails. "Mommy, you didn’t even look at Grape."
Han Tingting turned around. "That’s Mommy’s fault. Will Grape forgive me?"
Grape wasn’t one to hold a grudge. She smiled and asked the question she had posed countless times before: "Mommy, why is my nickname Grape?"
Han Tingting smiled. "Because Mommy has a very close online friend named Youyou. When I was pregnant with you, I loved eating grapefruits, so I gave you this nickname. Don’t you like it?"
Grape blinked. "I do like it..."
Yang Kun smiled, too. He was incredibly curious about this "Youyou" his wife mentioned, but since she had never appeared in their lives, he could only push that curiosity down.
Tan You continued to watch over Han Tingting’s life, until one day the system alerted her, "Host, the mission is entering its final countdown."
By now, Tan You was still in her chubby form, but Han Tingting had become an old woman in her twilight years. Tan You understood. "Does this mean I can’t remain in this world after she passes away?"
"Correct. In fact, Host, you could have submitted the mission as soon as she was married." The system answered in a mechanical tone, clearly not understanding why Tan You had lingered for so long.
Tan You had her own reasons. ’I think this is great. Free from the shackles of a physical body, I feel better than ever. Staying a little longer is good, too. I can learn so much by observing someone else’s life.’
The instant Han Tingting passed away, Tan You’s vision went black. When she opened her eyes again, she found her surroundings were a blur, not sharp and clear like before.
She fumbled for the glasses on her bedside table and put them on. "System," she called out, "Finalize the mission."
The Beauty System shuddered. An electronic voice soon rang in Tan You’s ear: "Initial mission complete. Obliteration threat lifted. Mission evaluation: S-rank. Host has obtained 5 base Energy Points. An additional reward is granted for evaluations of A-rank or higher. System awards 5 bonus Energy Points."
"Grand prize spinner unlocked. Awarding Host: 1 spin."
Tan You mulled it over. "I remember when we first bonded, you told me I’d be in danger of obliteration if I failed the mission. But looking at it now... you’re the one who was really in danger, aren’t you?"
One reason she had stayed in Han Tingting’s world for all those years was to learn more, but there was another: her growing curiosity about the system’s origins.
Web novels had risen in popularity over the years, and Tan You had read her fair share of system-centric stories. Combining that knowledge with the system’s dirt-poor Energy Point balance, Tan You had a sneaking suspicion that her little system was a complete dud.
The Beauty System burst out crying with a "WAAAH!" "S-Sys didn’t mean to! Sys doesn’t wanna be obliterated..."
Tan You frowned. "I haven’t even said anything. What are you crying about? All bark and no bite. Show me the grand prize spinner."
The system’s crocodile tears stopped instantly, and the grand prize spinner materialized before Tan You. The wheel was divided into thirty-six wedges. After scanning all the prizes, Tan You let out an exasperated laugh. "You told me I could win Intelligence Value from this thing? What are the odds of actually landing on it?"
"Look at these prizes! Ninety percent of them are for Beauty Value. There’s only one tiny sliver for Intelligence Value, and it’s just for a single point!"
The Beauty System feebly retorted, "There’s also a ’Perfect Bone Structure’ prize."
"And how is that any different from Beauty Value? Do you think I care about a few points of beauty? I want Intelligence Value!" Tan You nearly roared. ’Am I really that shallow?’
"And the spin costs Energy Points. Let me ask you, can Energy Points be directly exchanged for Intelligence Value?" Grinding her teeth, Tan You slowly composed herself.
"No. Energy Points can only be used for the prize spinner and to activate missions. They cannot be exchanged for any stat values." The system cowered, sensing a storm was about to break.
