Chapter 53: Chapter 53: I Do Not Agree to Your Internship

Luna’s heart sank, plummeting into a pit of despair. She could only wait for the axe to fall—for Academician Theodore Frost to reject her.

"Ah, you’re welcome. Just make sure to keep bringing me fresh perspectives in the future."

Luna’s eyes instantly lit up, practically glowing. "Huh?"

Her heart, which had just plunged into the abyss, suddenly hit rock bottom and shot back up, pounding with renewed life.

"Does this mean I was accepted? Academician Frost, I get to do my internship at Concordia Medical Hall, right?"

She was too excited to know what to do with herself, jumping to her feet and pacing around the room.

"Hahaha..." Theodore Frost, infected by her excitement, let out a hearty laugh.

’When you’re young, the results of a single exam feel like the end of the world.’

’It’s only when you’re old that you realize it was just one ordinary moment among the tens of thousands of days and nights that make up a life.’

’Yes, only when you’re old do you find your days have become calm, without a ripple.’

Ethan had arranged this whole internship matter very well.

’It gave an old man like me another chance to interact with the younger generation, to hear so many unique ideas.’

"Yes. You have one day to prepare. Report to Concordia Medical Hall at 8:30 AM the day after tomorrow."

"Okay, Academician Frost. Thank you. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity."

"Study hard, young lady. The future of medicine belongs to your generation."

Luna, full of fighting spirit, promised, "I will! I’ll work my hardest!"

"Get some rest. Sleep well."

"Goodnight, Academician Frost."

After hanging up, Luna pumped her fist in excitement. "This is great!"

She rummaged through the drawer of a small end table, looking for a new notebook and pen to take to Concordia Medical Hall. She needed to be ready to take daily notes and analyze cases at a moment’s notice.

"What has you so happy?"

Blaze had faintly heard the excitement in her voice on the phone and came out without even taking the time to dry his hair.

Luna pouted, hiding all her happiness away.

’The tie incident isn’t over yet.’

’Hmph!’

’He defiled my heartfelt gift. A married man, flirting with a woman who clearly has ulterior motives.’

’No, wait. Why do I sound so jealous?’

’What do I have to be jealous about?’

’I care about the tie.’

’Not about who that man, Blaze Fairchild, was dancing with!’

Blaze took in her huffy expression, tilting his head to look at her with a wry smile.

’Not going to answer my question?’

’Fine by me. I have my ways.’

"Give me your phone."

"Why?" Luna dodged his hand warily, clutching the phone to her chest.

"To get your revenge."

’Ooh...’

’This man... Can’t he just talk normally? Who is he trying to seduce with that wink?’

’He must have picked that up from spending too much time with that vixen, Yvonne.’

Luna’s lip twitched. "Re... revenge?"

"Mhm."

Blaze’s long fingers clamped down like a crab’s pincer, gripping her phone tightly and wrenching it from her grasp.

He opened the camera app, held the phone up in front of them, and got ready to take a picture.

"Come on, give me a smile."

"What are you doing?" Luna asked, confused.

"Don’t you want to make Yvonne Rhodes furious?"

Luna nodded emphatically. "I do!"

’If Yvonne hadn’t sent those pictures and videos, I wouldn’t have cut up the tie.’

’I regret it so much!’

"Then you need to cooperate with your husband, understand?"

"I understand."

Blaze couldn’t suppress a low chuckle as he ruffled her hair.

’Her hair’s gotten a little longer, too. It’s shinier than before.’

"Smile for me."

Luna curved her lips into a smile.

The instant Blaze pressed the shutter button, he ducked his head to kiss Luna’s cheek.

Caught completely off guard, she instinctively brought a hand to her face.

"CLICK."

"CLICK."

Blaze snapped several photos in a row.

"Let’s see how they turned out."

He swiped through the photos on her phone.

Luna looked up. Blaze’s eyelashes were thick and long.

Seeing his focused expression, she found herself unable to resist and obediently looked at the photos.

"How about this one?" Blaze held up the best candid shot for her to see.

In the photo, she looked surprised, and the way she was touching her face perfectly showed off the pink ring on her finger.

Amid the interplay of light and shadow, Blaze was leaning in, his lips pressed to her cheek.

Small and petite, she was held firmly in his embrace, one of his arms draped possessively over her shoulder as he kissed her tenderly.

The mood lighting cast a soft blue hue over them, making the scene look intimate, playful, and blissful.

"It’s beautiful," Luna said, but feeling that wasn’t enough, she added, "Beautiful enough to make Yvonne Rhodes absolutely furious."

Blaze ruffled her hair, then pulled her down onto his lap. "Let me see," he said, his voice slow and leisurely.

At that moment, their position was extremely intimate.

She was sitting on Blaze’s lap while he held the phone with both hands, his chin resting on her shoulder.

When he spoke, his face brushed against the shell of her ear, and waves of heat spread out from it.

Luna’s heart hammered like a drum. THUMP, THUMP-THUMP...

Each beat was more forceful than the last, each thud louder than the one before.

She had neither the energy nor the presence of mind to care that Blaze was scrolling through her social media feed.

"I was being used. She definitely has ulterior motives."

Blaze saw through Yvonne’s games in an instant. No wonder the PR department always assigned her to him.

’Many of the posts and work photos on Yvonne’s feed were deliberately misleading, painting me as her backer.’

"I’ll tell Kyle Joyce tomorrow to have her replaced."

Luna let out a noncommittal "Oh," as if it had nothing to do with her.

"Don’t you ’oh’ me, hmm?" Blaze warned, his lips pressing against her ear. His meaning couldn’t have been more obvious.

He knew she couldn’t handle his teasing, knew exactly where her weak spots were.

As he spoke, Blaze had already finished typing out the caption:

Kisses and love, for my dearest wife. —Blaze Fairchild.

He set the post’s visibility to "select contacts" and tapped on the profile picture—a glamour shot of Yvonne herself. Luna hadn’t even bothered to give her a custom contact name.

Finally, he tapped "Post."

"You’re so wicked," Luna said, not even trying to hide her glee.

"Like it?" he asked, his voice low and raspy.

Luna nodded. "Mhm."

"You’ve cut up the tie. Feeling better now?"

She was, but at the same time, she wasn’t.

Something still felt off. There was a tightness in her chest.

But she couldn’t figure out why.

’So conflicted, so twisted... Luna, what’s wrong with you!’

’Whatever, it’s not important.’

"I have some good news to tell you."

"Go on."

The man behind her grew playful, his hot, wet tongue tracing a path behind her ear and down her neck.

’Looks like getting Blaze to take that Chinese medicine to counteract the poison is imperative.’

’If this keeps up, Blaze is going to devour me sooner or later.’

’The first time wasn’t pleasant. I don’t want to try it a second time while I’m pregnant.’

"I passed my interview with Concordia Medical Hall. I start my internship the day after tomorrow, at 8:30 every morning."

"An interview? When was this?" He clearly remembered Concordia Medical Hall wasn’t on the schedule Caleb had reported.

"Yesterday morning," Luna answered truthfully.

Blaze froze. A chilling voice sounded from behind her. "I don’t approve."

"Why not?"

She believed him. If he didn’t approve, there was no way she’d be able to leave Fairchild Estate.

But this was an opportunity she had spent so long preparing for. She wasn’t going to give up this rare internship experience.

If she missed this chance, she might never get another one.

Blaze’s ink-black eyes stared at her unblinkingly. "There is no why."

"I’m going whether you approve or not." Luna knew how much he cared about the baby. "I’ll just be at Concordia Medical Hall, shadowing Academician Frost, Dean Frost, and Assistant Frost during consultations. It won’t be tiring, and I won’t be in a crowd. The baby will be perfectly safe."

Blaze stood up, still holding her. "Let’s go to bed. It’s late."

’Don’t even think about brushing this aside! If we don’t settle this tonight, I won’t be able to sleep!’

"I’m not sleeping. I have to do this internship. I have to learn, otherwise I’ll never know how to apply my knowledge. Medicine is inherently a holistic discipline. Anyone can study diseases one by one, but real people don’t just get one sickness at a time."

Luna launched into a long-winded explanation, trying to make Blaze understand just how important this internship was to her.

"That’s why I need this internship."

"If you insist on going, then the first thing I’ll do is hold Caleb responsible for this lapse in his duties."
