Chapter 5: Losing Her Freedom Editor: Henyee Translations

Seeing Grandpa Fairchild about to strike, Luna Axton immediately spoke up to explain, "Grandpa Fairchild, I’m twenty-two. I’m an adult."

The young girl’s bright, watery eyes looked at him, and Julian Fairchild believed her. The girl had a spirited air about her—pure and clean. Just looking at her was comforting.

"She’s carrying my child. Grandpa, you were in a hurry for a granddaughter-in-law and a great-grandchild, so I went and registered our marriage today."

Blaze Fairchild pulled out their marriage certificate and placed it on the coffee table as proof of his words.

"You little brat! Is marriage something you can be so careless about?!"

Grandpa Fairchild’s voice suddenly boomed. Luna Axton, already nervous, was so startled her heart skipped a beat. She subconsciously started picking at the dead skin on her fingers.

Blaze Fairchild was used to it. His grandfather had a voice like a great bell and was in robust health.

"The women you arranged for me were too calculating. I didn’t like them, and I don’t want to waste time on blind dates. Since she’s carrying my child, it’s my responsibility to take care of her."

Julian Fairchild knew the grandson he had raised by himself very well.

Finding blind dates was a waste of time. But the claim about taking responsibility just because there was a child... that wasn’t necessarily the case.

His grandson had never cared much for the idea of family.

To him, marriage was optional. Living alone was more convenient for his work.

The young girl he’d brought back, however, fit his requirements for a granddaughter-in-law perfectly: kind, gracious, vibrant, and lovely.

As for why there was a child?

His grandson was twenty-eight, in the prime of his life. It was normal for him to have physical needs.

Julian Fairchild was pleased. "Since you’re married, live a good life together. Feelings can be nurtured over time. Now that you have your own little family, don’t spend all your time at work. Work is never-ending."

"Yes, Grandpa." Blaze Fairchild knew well enough that arguing was pointless. It was easier to just go along with the old man; as long as Grandpa was happy, that was all that mattered. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"What’s the young lady’s name?"

"Luna Axton."

"Luna, what a beautiful name." The more Julian Fairchild learned, the more satisfied he became. "Who else is in your family?"

Luna Axton glanced quickly at the man across from her. He was looking at her too, but showed no intention of intervening. "Just my mother."

"Fairchild Estate is spacious. If you’re not used to the food or find it hard to live here, you can bring your mother over."

Thinking of her mother in the hospital bed, a sharp, sour feeling rushed to her nose. She bit her lip to hold it back. "Okay, thank you, Grandpa."

Blaze Fairchild remained silent, watching her every expression, her every smile, studying her intently.

After lunch, Luna Axton followed Blaze Fairchild to his residence.

The man strode ahead on his long legs as before. Luna, having just eaten, felt a pain in her lower abdomen when she walked too fast, so she followed him from a short distance.

They passed through a moon gate and entered Lakeside Manor. The gentle babbling of a stream filled the air.

The villa before them was as serene and idyllic as if it were nestled deep in a mountain forest. In front of the villa was a diverted stream with a small arched bridge leading to a garden on the other side.

"Good afternoon, Young Master." The people in the living room had been waiting for some time. Seeing Blaze Fairchild enter, they all bowed their heads in greeting.

"This is Luna Axton, the Young Madam."

He gestured to the person who should have been beside him to introduce her, but the staff just looked at him in confusion. When he glanced to his side, he realized Luna Axton had only just reached the doorway.

Everyone was staring at her. Luna Axton quickened her pace and came to a stop a few feet away from the man.

In unison, the staff said, "Good afternoon, Young Madam."

Luna Axton was very uncomfortable in such situations and could only manage a stiff, "Hello, everyone."

Blaze Fairchild wasted no time giving instructions. "From now on, she is your top priority. You are to anticipate her every need and prevent any potential problems before they arise."

"Yes, sir," they replied.

Without waiting for Blaze Fairchild to say more, the staff members stepped forward one by one to introduce themselves.

"Good afternoon, Young Madam. I am Dr. Miller, your prenatal nutritionist and health consultant. I will be responsible for your diet, mental well-being, and prenatal check-ups."

"Good afternoon, Young Madam. I am Belle, your prenatal yoga instructor."

"Good afternoon, Young Madam. I am your bodyguard and part-time driver, Caleb."

"Good afternoon, Young Madam. I am Mrs. Creed, the housekeeper of Lakeside Manor. You can come to me directly with any needs you may have."

Luna Axton’s gaze swept over the four of them—all women. "I will be in your care."

Except for Mrs. Creed, who had a kind and gentle face, the other three seemed to be temporary hires. They stood rigidly, their posture stiff.

"From now on, they will manage every aspect of your life. If you are dissatisfied with anything, you can tell me directly."

"Okay." Luna Axton was already dissatisfied. "Can I live by myself? Without them?"

"No."

Luna Axton hadn’t expected Blaze Fairchild’s rejection to be so blunt. In front of so many people, she felt a little embarrassed. But she accepted it quickly.

Right. The man said he wanted a healthy, sound child. The baby is more important than my feelings.

She asked again, "Then can I go see my mother?"

Blaze Fairchild’s phone vibrated. He glanced at it but didn’t answer.

"You can. Caleb will take you. She will be with you whenever you are not at Lakeside Manor."

Luna Axton mumbled a resigned "mhm." She couldn’t change any of the man’s decisions. The man answered his phone and walked out, leaving her there.

She looked at the four women. They looked back at her, their faces fixed in professional smiles.

The atmosphere was awkward.

"Young Madam, shall I give you a tour of Lakeside Manor?" Mrs. Creed suggested.

"No need. Just tell me where I can take care of my basic needs."

Mrs. Creed didn’t understand. "Young Madam, what do you mean by ’basic needs’?"

"Eating, sleeping, and using the bathroom."

After hearing this, Mrs. Creed didn’t find her words crude at all. On the contrary, she found her remarkably direct and interesting.

"The Young Master rarely eats at home. Your meals will be based on a diet plan from the nutritionist, and I’ll prepare them. Everything else can be taken care of in the rooms upstairs. The second floor has a study and a bedroom suite."

One bedroom.

Looks like she’ll be living alone. She won’t have to face that man. This is great.

"Okay, I understand. You don’t need to make dinner tonight. I’m going straight from the hospital to my lab class at school."

The upside of not having to work a part-time job was that, outside of her studies, she could always be with her mother.

Mrs. Creed looked troubled. "I must report to the Young Master first before I can decide whether or not to prepare dinner."

Luna Axton bit her lip and said nothing. Now she can’t even decide for herself when to eat.

Time seemed to stand still in the stalemate. The four women didn’t move, all waiting for Luna Axton to speak. "Go ahead and make it. I’ll be back to eat."

The rules were set by that man. There’s no point being stubborn with them; she’d still need his approval anyway. Why waste time?

Hearing this, Mrs. Creed breathed a sigh of relief.

"Caleb, let’s go."

Caleb drove while Luna Axton sat in the back, her anxious heart preventing her from thinking about anything else. Her mind was consumed with one thought: how was she going to explain the switch to a private VIP room to her mother?

Mom is so accomplished and proud. When she finds out she slept with a man for a million yuan, she’ll be furious, won’t she?

And now she’s pregnant. She couldn’t bear to give up the baby, so she married him while she was still in school. Mom will be so disappointed in her, won’t she?

Caleb followed behind her, stopping tactfully at the door to the hospital room. Luna Axton stood at the door, took a deep breath to compose herself, then mustered her courage and pushed the door open.

"Mom."

At the sound of her voice, all of Jenna Axton’s pain vanished in an instant. When she faced Luna Axton, her eyes were gentle, and a smile spread across her lips. "Sweetheart."

Luna Axton reached the bedside and, without a word, dropped to her knees, bowing her head to admit her wrongdoing. "Mom, I’m sorry. I’ve disappointed you."

In her mother’s eyes, the mistake she’d made was something that crossed a fundamental line. All she could do was kneel and beg for her mother’s forgiveness.

Jenna Axton had never said a single harsh word to Luna Axton. Her daughter was sensitive and had strong self-esteem; she was the type of child who didn’t need a heavy hand.

Jenna Axton’s heart ached. She wanted to pull her daughter up, but couldn’t summon any strength. With the increase in ascites fluid, her abdomen had swollen even more, making it even harder to prop herself up.

"Sweetheart, Mom has told you before, I will support any decision you make." Unable to get up, Jenna Axton could only remind Luna Axton of their agreement. "You are an almost excessively well-behaved and sensible child. I trust that any decision you’ve made must have been carefully considered."

"No~" Luna Axton’s eyes welled with tears, and her throat tightened. "Mom, I really... I did something very, very wrong."

"Sweetheart, come sit on the bed and talk. It’s uncomfortable for me to hold myself up like this."

Hearing this, Luna Axton looked up and saw her mother supporting her body with just her arms, the whites of her eyes stained yellow. She was a medical student; she knew very well that her mother’s condition had worsened.

Luna Axton quickly got up and helped her mother lie back down.

"Sweetheart, I know you. Whatever you did, it can’t be wrong."

Luna Axton had thought before that it would be better if her mom could just give her a beating, the way Ms. Brooks used to hit Joy Coleman.

But her mother was too gentle a person; she wasn’t capable of hitting someone.

"Mom," Luna Axton confessed, "I’m pregnant."
