Chapter 96: Clearing Raid Start

Everyone assembled in the centre of the chasm, doing a final check of their equipment as we got ready to advance towards the other chasm where the main group of Anomalies were located.

For now, the Commander Class Anomaly has yet to appear but we’ve already killed so many Anomalies and made so much noise that it should know there’s someone here.

My guess is that it’s probably holed up with the Gatekeeper and fortifying that place in preparation for us to appear.

Either way, we would still need to fight our way there so it doesn’t really make a difference anyway.

Once everyone was ready, we set off once again, moving towards the narrow tunnels to reach the cavern that would eventually lead to the ledge that overlooked the chasm.

As before, I was leading the way with my Guardians following behind me while another Vanguard group alongside a small group of Guardsmen were attached to my party.

And either by chance or design, the Vanguard group that was chosen to accompany us was Dan’s group.

I’ve checked my phone earlier and I’ve still yet to receive a message from him asking where I was so I suspect he either didn’t care about finding where I was... Or he had assumed that I was busy somewhere else.

The rest of the Vanguards would follow behind us and they would form up into their groups in the cavern before we reached the chasm.

The plan was to fortify the entrance and hold the position while the first group rained down fire from above.

And only once it’s clear, we would advance towards where we believe the Gatekeeper to be.

I was expecting there to be more Anomalies along the way but surprisingly, the rest of the way to the chasm was completely devoid of any Anomalies.

Then I figured that the Anomalies that had been here must have been attracted by the earlier battle and cleared out from these tunnels, making them empty again.

On that note... It seems like I had to recategorise the tunnels to big tunnels because the Anomalies had smashed their way through here and enlarged the tunnels... Which I supposed should have been obvious to begin with because otherwise those bigger Anomalis could not have managed to squeeze their way there.

But there was just one question that I found weird...

Assuming that the Anomalies had dug their way through to enlarge the tunnel... Why do I not see any signs of excavation?

It’s like the tunnel just enlarged itself or something...

That was when I came across a rather unexpected sight at the end of the large tunnel.

A large Anomaly was holding up the top of the tunnel with its hands seemingly melting into the rock above, almost like it was made of liquid.

All of us immediately lowered ourselves into combat stances, expecting the creature to start attacking us.

But despite our appearance, the Anomaly did not move at all or even showed any indication that it registered our presence.

I went up to it and tried to extend my senses towards it, only to realise there was not a single iota of life energy in it.

It’s like it has turned into an actual rock.

"It’s fine... I guess this Anomaly’s ability is meant to shape tunnels but in return, it will expire once it does," I informed them.

The others nodded at my explanation and we continued on our way towards the chasm.

Unlike the tunnel that had been enlarged, the entrance to the chasm had clearly been smashed through to make it bigger from the rocks and earth that were thrown haphazardly around it.

I made my way over to the opening and peered over the ledge, this time being more careful not to get spotted in case the Commander Class Anomaly was where we had first found it.

And sure enough, there it was... Floating on top of a rock outcropping like some kind of leader looking down at its subjects.

All of the Anomalies around it were also looking at it, as though waiting for instructions.

This worked for us as we might actually be able to take out the entire group plus the Commander Class Anomaly in a single strike.

With the way the chasm spiralled upwards, the Anomalies would have to move past this entrance in order to go up to the higher floors, so if we could hold this path, none of them would be able to reach the top except for the long armed Anomalies.

And if it’s just them, the ones at the top should be able to deal with them since they would be open to gunfire from above as well.

Also, it seems like the Commander Class Anomaly isn’t as intelligent as I thought... Since it’s clearly functioning like some kind of enemy with a set programming where it returns back to its original spot once it loses track of its target.

I crawled back to the rest and nodded, "They’re all still there... We can start the second phase of the operation."

The signaller of the Guardsmen immediately took out his receiver and relayed my instructions to the people above us.

For now, we arranged ourselves in preparation to also engage the Anomalies with the melee Vanguards occupying the front.

I sucked in a breath and activated the purple smoke buff and watched as it clad around me like a cloak.

All prepared, I turned back to the signaller and he was still communicating with the other person on the line before he turned to me.

"Mortal God... Ready to fire on your command."

Oh, leaving it to me I see?

I turned back to the Vanguards, "On my command, form a line at the entrance and prepare to attack any and all Anomalies that appear at the entrance. Do not let a single one past you!"

All of them nodded an affirmative and I turned to the signaller, "Do it."

"Operation is a go!" The signaller relayed.

I popped a flare and threw it at the entrance of the tunnel, illuminating it to reveal our location to the ones above.

Right after that, several more flares were tossed out into the chasm, illuminating the area for the people above to spot.

Almost immediately, the sounds of gunshots ripped through the air which were then followed by the whistling of rockets before the chasm was lit up in a sea of flames.

The Vanguards rushed out to the entrance, forming a defensive line against the Anomalies as they reacted to the attack and tried to run up the slope to reach our comrades above.

I saw the Commander Class Anomaly get struck by several bullets before the stones around it flew up to form into a protective shield, even blocking a rocket that exploded against it which only blasted a small hole before it was instantly patched up.

The Anomaly looked up before the stones started to cover it like a cocoon and it disappeared completely from view.

I had a bad feeling and looked up, seeing a black hole form above which was undoubtedly where it was planning to teleport to.

While I trusted them to be able to deal with the long armed Anomaly... I did not believe they would be able to deal with a Commander Class Anomaly on their own...

I grimaced before turning to Olivia, "Olivia!! I need a boost!!"

She looked up at where the Anomaly was forming and nodded, not even questioning me.

She cupped her hands in front of her and crouched as I took a step back before running towards her.

I then leapt towards her and used Kris’s ability to change my gravity before Olivia shoved her hands upwards, throwing me all the way up towards the top of the chasm.

I shot up like a rocket and I reached out my hands right as the Anomaly reappeared, its hands spreading out like some kind of messiah and the rocks around it turning into arrow shaped bullets.

It was completely caught off guard when I crashed into it from below, my fists punching into its chest and sending it smashing into the ceiling with me.

I was hoping that would be enough to take it out, only to see that it had a layer of rock armour surrounding it and I only managed to crack the surface of the rock.

It turned its gaze towards me and it tried to raise its hand, only for me to grab onto it and give it another punch in the chest, smashing it deeper into the rock.

But when I tried to punch it a third time, I was suddenly struck in the chest by a stone rod shooting out from the ceiling, sending me falling down to the chasm below.

I managed to spin myself out from under the rod and let it fall past me, changing my gravity again to float up in the air.

I looked up and the Anomaly was wrapped up in a cocoon to teleport away again, this time the black hole appearing below as it reappeared back on the outcropping to point a rock staff at me.

Oh? Is that a challenge? Bring it on then.
