Chapter 92: Preparing To Strike The Rift

I looked at the crowd that had gathered in front of the jetty as more of them got off the boats to arrive on the island, feeling quite impressed by the number.

I’m pretty sure Olivia only sent out the mobilisation request yesterday and we already managed to get a small army to mobilise for the raid today.

I did note that most of the people here were other worlders instead of humans which was interesting to see.

If I’m not wrong, the number of other worlders taking up Vanguard positions has increased quite dramatically ever since it was made official that we now have a Mortal God.

I’m not just talking about other worlders migrating here but even other worlders who were already living here switching jobs to become a Vanguard too.

I wonder why...

Making sure that my mask was firmly attached to my face, I stepped in front of the crowd, getting their attention.

I had to suck in a breath and focus myself into the role of being the Mortal God once again.

"Good morning. I would first like to thank all of you for coming on such short notice. I believe you are all aware of the situation here and in case you don’t, I will reiterate."

Ok... So far so good...

"We intend to conquer a rift that has been present on this island for some time. I will not sugarcoat it... The rift’s Danger Class is set at level four so if you came here expecting an easy fight, then I’m afraid that will not be the case. Once again, information about the rift has already been sent out earlier but I will repeat it here again in case there are some misunderstandings."

Or if they did not bother to read them...

I’m quite sure that there were some Vanguards here who probably thought it would be a walk in the park for them to gain some valour in helping close a rift or to just brag that they have fought alongside me before and never checked if they could even survive here.

This is why I’m kind of giving them an opportunity to turn back in case they realised they were completely screwed if they continued.

"For the past few days, my Guardians and I have done a recon of the rift and the Anomalies we have found are mostly bipedal creatures that are using rock as armour. They range from child sized to the size of a small building and we suspect there might be even bigger ones. The location of the rift is mainly an underground series of tunnels so we would most likely be dealing with close combat most of the time with little space to manoeuvre. Additionally, we also confirmed the existence of a Commander Class Anomaly as well."

That revelation made a few of the Vanguards start muttering amongst themselves, proving my assumption that some of them did not read the report because this was definitely highlighted in it when we sent out the request.

I ignored the commotion and continued, "Additionally, I believe the Commander Class Anomaly is also able to use magic to a certain degree and has the ability to teleport as well. So during the expedition, please keep all of that in mind."

I gave them some time to digest the information I had given them before I stepped back and allowed Olivia to take over.

"If there is anyone who does not feel confident of dealing with this rift, please sound out later. We can have you help out in auxiliary duties instead," She announced, which would save those people from needing to feel embarrassed about backing out and running back to the mainland. "If there are no other questions, we will be headed to the location of the rift now."

Our group then made our way towards the beach where the rift was located.

Before this the place was practically empty aside from some installations around that were meant to monitor the portal.

Now... In just a single night... They had turned this place into an army outpost.

Since the MAM was practically dissolved, it seems like we called in the Singapore Armed Forces for aid in the expedition as well.

They even brought in one of our Victory class Corvettes and anchored it outside in the open waters though most likely as a show of force to advertise the participation of our armed forces in this expedition.

There were several tents set up and various soldiers in green combat fatigues were milling about trying their best to act busy. All of them had the same khaki coloured berets on their heads.

One of them came up to me and I noted the single coat of arms, or otherwise known colloquially as a ’crab’, on his rank insignia, outing him as a Major.

He gave me a salute before stretching out his hand towards me, "Mortal God. Major Liam from the Guards Division. I have been assigned to assist you in this operation. My men are ready to strike whenever you are."

Oh? So they will also be committing troops to head inside the rift as well? I have to admit that I didn’t see that coming. Especially since the combat zone would be quite tight with the tunnels so they would only be able to bring in infantry for this expedition.

But I guess the fact they decided to field Guardsmen for this operation meant they at least knew we wouldn’t be able to bring vehicles in there.

I shook his hand, "Thank you for your support, Major Liam. Once we organise the Vanguards, we will gather to plan our attack."

"Understood, I will get my men to gather as well. We will be in that tent over there."

He nodded at me before he returned to the tent he had pointed out and I turned to see Olivia already organising the Vanguards into groups.

As mentioned, the battlefield this time would be in a smaller space so having a large group move in together like the last rift would have been counterproductive and open us up for ambushes and a more difficult time to move around.

So the idea was to create multiple different groups that will move independently and can provide support to any group that gets attacked until we reach the chasm where we will assemble to deal with the Anomaly army.

Once the Vanguards had been organised, representatives from each of the groups stepped forward and followed me to the tent that the Major had pointed out to me earlier.

My Guardians stayed outside aside from Olivia who followed behind me as I stepped past the flaps.

The tent turned out to be a command room and several military personnel were gathered around a table.

On the table were various copies of maps that looked to be depicting the tunnels which I wondered how they managed to get their hands on.

Then I remembered that Leena was drawing maps during our expedition so she must have given the copies to the military when we got them involved.

That’s pretty efficient.

Everyone in the room straightened when I entered.

"Mortal God," The Major greeted again.

"Major, what’s the plan?" I asked, joining them at the table alongside Olivia and the other Vanguards.

He leaned on the table and started pointing at various points on the maps.

"Please correct me if I am wrong anywhere, Mortal God... It is by my understanding that we are to secure the chasm located here which also lead to a tunnel where the Mana Crystal veins are located, correct?"

I nodded, "That’s right."

"And there are two ways to enter this chasm. One from the top here and another through a lower entrance down here?"

I nodded again, "That’s right."

"In that case... I suggest a two prong attack, Mortal God. I will have my men stationed up here where the spiral path of the chasm is to take the high ground and secure a route of escape back to the portal. Meanwhile, you and the Vanguards can move in through the lower entrance and assault them from there. While you hold your ground, we will shoot at them from above to thin out their numbers."

"Are you confident in shooting down these Anomalies?"

"We will be using armour piercing weaponry, Mortal God. Just please hold your ground while we are still raining down fire on the Anomalies or you might be caught in the crossfire."

"Sounds like a plan... Once they have been cleared out, we will move in to deal with whoever that;s left. What about the Commander Class Anomaly?"

"We were hoping that you would be able to deal with it."

"Fair enough. If there are any Anomalies that conventional warfare does not work on, I will deal with them."

"I will also attach a unit to you to relay information, Mortal God, if you don’t mind?"

"Not at all. If that’s all... Shall we begin the operation?"

"Of course." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

Let’s do this then...
