Chapter 63: Chapter 62: The Deal That Changed a Life

For others, the Dimensional Limit Mechanism may be a term that has only recently become popular, but not for Walter.

He had heard of this mysterious organization long ago within his circle. Like some well-known tech companies, such as Four-Dimensional Technology, Life Pharmaceuticals, Nagase Group... They were able to rapidly expand from obscure small companies to the industry’s leaders, all with the organization’s strong support behind them.

Unexpectedly, one day his family company would also receive the organization’s favor.

"What did they say? Did the reply contain contact information?" Walter’s speed of speech noticeably quickened.

Perhaps not expecting his father to be so excited, Gio took a slight step back, "There’s a phone number... but judging by the number, it’s an international long distance."

"Send me the business letter." He said immediately.

"Do you want to personally call them?" Surprise flashed in Gio’s eyes, "Are the discussions about the Dimensional Limit Mechanism online all true?"

"I don’t know what people are discussing online, nor am I interested in knowing. But this deal is to be negotiated by me. You may leave now."

The other complied, but before leaving, he glanced at the inner room, almost inadvertently.

Walter pressed the communicator, instructing everyone not to disturb him. After ensuring the bodyguards and servants had left, he solemnly picked up the phone.

This number might go through numerous transfers; maybe the person answering isn’t the key figure, or perhaps it’s a dead number. But Walter didn’t expect that the moment he pressed the last digit, a voice came through the receiver.

"Dimensional Limit Mechanism."

The voice was youthful, belonging to a man.

Since the other party didn’t mention a name, it signified he did not wish to leave any name, even a pseudonym or code name.

Walter naturally wouldn’t pursue this, "I am Walter Vis. I heard you wish to purchase a batch of light weapons, around five thousand in number?" While waiting, he had already read all the letters sent by the other party on the computer. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

"Correct." The man replied briefly.

"How will the transaction be carried out? It’s easy if it’s money, but the capability..."

"Just initiate a video call, but before doing so, you must first decide what kind of capability you desire."

So straightforward?

Walter felt his heart pounding a bit heavily, almost like when he first took over the company from his father and successfully conducted a deal with others. At over fifty, his body was bursting with an inexplicable vitality.

"May I ask, can it be any kind of capability?"

The other side seemed to chuckle lightly, "Mr. Vis, what do you think?"

If any other businessperson dared to speak like this, Walter would likely hang up the phone nine times out of ten, but at the moment, he was holding his breath, "Allow me to ponder for a bit."

Actually, he didn’t quite care about the capability he might receive.

What he truly valued was establishing a connection with the Dimensional Limit Mechanism.

He didn’t know why the other chose him. In the arms industry, the family company was completely unremarkable. But then again, those tech companies rumored to be related to the organization also rose from obscurity, so the selection seemed reasonable.

His company’s performance appeared to have entered a stable period, but Walter always harbored a lingering worry. Their product lines focused on individual soldier equipment, aside from firearms and ammunition, including bulletproof vests, exoskeleton armor, and infrared night vision devices. Yet those markets are continually squeezed by unmanned and smart weapons, leaving little room for growth.

Moreover, the illegal transactions that couldn’t see the light of day face dual pressures from malicious competition and international scrutiny. Car accidents disguised as mishaps, even direct installation of explosive devices for assassination, were no longer new to him.

Walter desperately sought a new market, preferably in the competitive high-tech equipment field, then completely extricate from illegal arms trading.

Now that the Dimensional Limit Mechanism has reached out, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

If he could confirm the other’s identity, he would even give away these guns instead of receiving payment.

Unfortunately, obtaining capability is the only way he could confirm the other party’s identity.

Walter dared not remain silent for too long. After pondering for over ten seconds, he spoke again, "If possible, I’d like to know whether there’s a traitor within the company."

Lately, his business has been targeted for sniping, with competitors seemingly preemptively aware of his quotes, coupled with frequent assassination risks when traveling. He already started suspecting someone inside having foul play.

However, this is a family affair. Without confirming the other’s identity, it’s not appropriate to say too much.

The other side didn’t immediately respond.

Just when Walter suspected this request might be too far-fetched, a video connection suddenly popped up on the monitor on his desk.

The lighting on the other side was very dim, hardly discernible background, and in the center of the screen was a large up-close lens.

"Look into the lens," said the voice over the phone.

Walter suddenly realized the company network had been breached.

But he didn’t feel surprised. The study computer was originally connected to the public network, storing no sensitive information, and given it’s the Dimensional Limit Mechanism, such means were unsurprising.

He looked at the monitor for less than two seconds before the screen went black and then flashed back to the normal desktop.

"Try it out," the voice said again.

Walter was taken aback!

He sensed a different emotion, calm... serene, like a cup of milkless black tea. Was this his illusion?

"Is this—"

For the first time, Walter felt reserved in doing business for so many years.

"This is the ability you need. Don’t worry, once you get accustomed, you can choose whether to sense it," the man seemed unsurprised at his astonishment, "We’ll contact again when your goods are ready."

Then the call was disconnected.

Walter still hadn’t come to his senses.

He discovered this special emotion arose when the other spoke, definitely not an illusion. Could this be the capability bestowed by the Mechanism!?

But they didn’t even meet him, let alone administer pills, surgery, or inject him. The only thing they did was simply have him look at the lens through the network.

After sitting in a daze for a moment, Walter pressed the communication bell on the desk.

"George, come over here, and bring Danny in as well."

George was his old butler, currently waiting in the next room.

"Yes."

Very soon, he pushed the blood-stained man to stand before him, "What are your orders?"

"Just say something to me." Walter leaned back in the soft chair.

The old butler hesitated for a moment, but still followed the orders of the family head, "The weather is nice today?"

"Tell me I’m handsome."

George’s face twitched, "Sir, I don’t think that description fits you."

Walter was out of character, "I want to hear it."

The old butler could only keep a straight face, "You... are handsome."

With every word the other person said, even a short "Yes," Walter could feel a bright, comfortable warmth as if sunlight were coming through the window in the autumn, completely different from what the agency man made him feel. He could clearly separate the two.

Even when the old butler spoke insincere words, this emotion remained unchanged.

This indicated that it couldn’t determine truth from falsehood.

"You say it too." Walter turned his head to look at Danny, whose hands were tied behind his back.

"Boss, I really don’t know anything! Believe me, I’m being framed!" Danny pleaded repeatedly, "Please let me go, I have children waiting for me at home!"

In an instant, a distinct malevolence flooded his mind, starkly contrasting with the previous warmth.

"I see." Walter’s lips curled up; this was the feeling of power... an experience ordinary people could never appreciate. But what pleased him even more was that the company could finally connect with the Mechanism.

"Are you going to let him go?" the old butler inquired.

"Release him. And choose a spacious bay for it, considering he’s stuck with me for ten years."

At those words, Danny’s face turned deathly pale, but before he could plead further, George had already stuffed a handkerchief into his mouth.

"Wait, let Gio handle this matter." Walter said again, "Since he’s taking over the company, similar things will be inevitable; let him get used to them ahead of time."

George nodded in agreement, "I’ll go inform him."

Soon the eldest son was summoned to the study.

"Father, what is this..." He looked at Danny, who was covered in blood and had his mouth stuffed, his brows furrowed deeply.

And at this moment, Walter suddenly felt an indescribable malevolence, far stronger than Danny’s! If Danny’s discomfort was akin to a puddle of dirty water, then the current malice was a surging tsunami!

He stared at the eldest son, suddenly understanding many things in his mind: leaks of some business secrets couldn’t be done by one or two employees conspiring together, but if the company’s heir was involved, it would be an entirely different situation.

"Father, isn’t your treatment of Mr. Danny a bit rash?" Gio hadn’t noticed the change on his father’s face at all, "I think this matter needs further investigation, the informant’s words are not to be trusted..."

Walter opened the drawer, took out a revolver, unlocked the safety and pushed it to Gio.

"Kill him, now."

Gio froze, "Father—"

"Danny is a traitor." Walter said in the slowest tone, "Don’t forget the family dictum, never forgive a traitor."

The eldest son’s face turned ghastly pale, he walked to the desk, picked up the gun with hands that seemed weighed down with lead.

He was obviously hesitating but didn’t hesitate long.

"You’re forcing me..."

Gio finished saying in a low voice, suddenly turned the gun towards Walter, "Let me and Danny go! Or I’ll shoot!"

"Young master, what are you doing!?" The old butler was greatly shocked.

Walter remained unfazed, "Is it because of your wife’s death? Or is it that your disgust for me has reached an intolerable level?"

"All of it!" Gio’s face no longer bore the previous indifference, replaced by an unprecedented ferocity, "If it weren’t for you smuggling arms, Eliza wouldn’t be blown up! If the family hadn’t started this damned company, many tragedies wouldn’t have happened! If you continue being so cold-blooded, we’ll all meet our end sooner or later!"

Waves of malevolence hit one after another, seemingly endless.

Walter accepted them all.

He opened the other drawer, took out a revolver of the same style, and raised the barrel slowly.

"Don’t move, put it down!" Gio fiercely warned.

His father’s hand was slow but resolute.

Gio was the first to pull the trigger—

After a gunshot, the eldest son stared at him in shock, as if he couldn’t believe this was real, but as he clutched his chest and fell, all the pain on his face transformed into fierce unwillingness and hatred.

Only one of the two guns was loaded, which was one of Walter’s habits.

"Sir, he was your son!" The old butler couldn’t bear it.

Walter put down the gun, walked to George and patted his shoulder, "Precisely because he was the Vis family’s eldest son, I had to do it myself. And I suddenly feel... quite young, far from ready for retirement."

He found that his son was right; he truly was a cold-blooded animal, especially when standing in the balance between business and family affection. He didn’t even have time to mourn Gio’s betrayal, because that long-dormant heart of struggle was once again beating strongly.

This business, and all future dealings with the Dimensional Limit Mechanism, would be personally handled by him.
