Wedding Night: My Disabled Husband Made Me Cry-Chapter 33: I’ll Be Gentler Next Time
Vivian Quinn’s heart inexplicably began to race. She didn’t know what she was secretly hoping for, only that she was incredibly tense.
The mask came off, and Vivian Quinn saw the man’s face clearly.
It wasn’t the person she’d imagined. Instead, it was an incredibly ordinary face—the kind that would blend into a crowd without a second glance.
"What? Disappointed?" the man asked.
"No!" Vivian Quinn said hastily. "You haven’t taken off your glasses yet."
"My eyes are rather unsightly. I don’t usually let people see them. I hope you can understand."
"Oh." Vivian Quinn didn’t press the issue.
"Vivian, how could you steal Dad’s card!" Rachel Quinn demanded, holding out a black card. "This is Dad’s card! I’ve seen it before. He said it has a really high limit—you can charge fifty million on it in one go."
Nina King, looking as if she’d finally caught Vivian with her hand in the cookie jar, exclaimed excitedly, "Well, well, Vivian Quinn! Are you so poor you have to resort to stealing now? Poor Mr. Quinn and Lawrence! You try to guard against everything, but it’s hard to guard against a thief in your own house. To think they actually raised a thief!"
Vivian Quinn gave a faint smile. "Who told you this is Silas Quinn’s card?"
"We’re at this point, and you’re still being stubborn and refusing to admit it?"
"Vivian, stop denying it. I know you’re angry that Dad canceled your supplementary card, but you can’t just resort to stealing, no matter what." Rachel Quinn sighed, the very picture of disappointment. "Even if you were going to steal, you should have been smarter about it. Steal an inconspicuous one. But no, you had to take the one with the highest limit..."
Nina King was practically buzzing with excitement. "Rachel, stealing is illegal! Call the police and have her arrested! A fifty-million limit... that’s enough to have her rot in prison for life!"
Rachel Quinn put on a pained expression. "But Vivian is my sister, after all. Even if she has sticky fingers and steals things, I can’t just call the police and have her arrested..."
"Rachel, this is no time to be soft. You can’t cover for her!" Nina King reasoned. "Think about it. Today she dares to steal from Mr. Quinn; tomorrow she’ll be out stealing from strangers. When someone else finally calls the police on her, it’ll be your family’s reputation on the line!"
Rachel Quinn gave it some serious thought. "How about I call my dad to confirm?"
Since Vivian denied it, Rachel worried. If this really wasn’t Silas Quinn’s card, and she called the police to make a big scene, she’d be the one who ended up looking like a fool.
"Fine!"
Rachel Quinn took out her phone and made the call. Silas Quinn answered almost immediately. "Rachel, missing your dad already?"
"Dad, do you have that black card with you?"
"I do. It’s always in my wallet. Why?"
"It’s nothing. Can you just take a look for me now and make sure?"
"Of course."
Rachel Quinn waited patiently. Soon, Silas Quinn’s voice came over the line, panicked. "My black card is gone!"
Rachel Quinn was ecstatic. ’Now let’s see how Vivian tries to deny this!’
She immediately put the call on speaker. "Dad, is your black card really gone?"
"It’s gone. I know I put it in my wallet. All my other cards are here, but that one is missing."
Rachel Quinn said in a sorrowful tone, "Dad, I know where your black card is. I ran into Vivian at the mall. She’s shopping, and she has your card..."
"What?" Silas Quinn roared. "That disgraceful daughter! She actually dared to steal my card!"
"Dad, don’t be angry. You’ll make yourself sick," Rachel Quinn said, feigning concern.
"Disgraceful girl! Disgraceful girl! To steal from her own family! How could I not be furious!"
Even over the phone, Rachel Quinn knew this had crossed a line for Silas Quinn.
"I knew it! She was raised by a thief, so how could she be anything but a thief herself!"
"Dad, calm down. I’ll make Vivian come home and apologize. We’re family, after all. Nina suggested calling the police just now, but I thought about it, and I just can’t..."
Silas Quinn was very pleased. "Rachel, you’re so sensible. We can’t air our dirty laundry in public. We can’t call the police. But I’m not finished with her over this!"
Rachel Quinn hung up and looked at Vivian Quinn. "Vivian, did you hear that?"
Vivian Quinn remained noncommittal.
Thrilled, Nina King raised her voice and shouted, "Everyone, come and see! We’ve got a thief over here!"
A number of passersby started to gather to watch the commotion.
Nina King decided to strike while the iron was hot. "Rachel, she’s a thief! Even if you and Mr. Quinn are kind enough to let her off the hook, she won’t be grateful. Fine, don’t call the police, but we have to teach her a lesson today! Let’s get the mall manager over here to blacklist her and throw her out!"
The people in the crowd started pointing at Vivian Quinn and whispering.
"That’s right, miss. Your sister is a thief. If you don’t discipline her now, someone else will later. You can’t just let her go out and cause trouble for others."
"If you ask me, just kicking her out of the mall is letting her off easy. They should just call the police!" 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
"If she hasn’t bought anything with it yet, she won’t go to jail. At most, she’ll get a stern warning."
Rachel Quinn was filled with regret. ’I should have waited for Vivian to buy something and use the card first,’ she thought. ’Then I could have justifiably sent her to prison!’
Still, making Vivian lose face in public was a good consolation prize!
Rachel Quinn suppressed her inner delight, her face a mask of sorrow. "Vivian, you’re just too vain. That’s why you resort to such sneaky, thieving behavior. Let today be a lesson to you. I hope you learn from this and never, ever steal again."
"Her sister is so kind."
"Yeah, the sister is being very forgiving. How unlucky to have a sister like that."
Vivian Quinn just smiled, then calmly walked back into the store she’d just left to retrieve her purse and phone.
They weren’t going to call the police? Fine. She would.
Just as Vivian Quinn was about to press the call button, a low, indifferent voice cut through the air. "Who said the limit on this card is fifty million?"
Nina King looked the man up and down. "And who are you?"
"A bodyguard," the man answered.
Nina King scoffed. "A mere bodyguard dares to butt in? I bet you’ve never even seen a credit card with a limit this high, have you? But I guess that makes sense. Someone like you could never earn fifty million in your entire lifetime."
"If you’re broke, you shouldn’t be showing your face in a place like this. And this woman you’re with? Her character is... questionable. She flirts with everyone. I’d advise you to stay far away from her."
The man said coldly, "This is an unlimited card. Fewer than ten of them have been issued worldwide. Silas Quinn is not qualified to possess one."
Everyone was stunned. For some reason, even though these words were coming from a mere bodyguard, his deep voice seemed to possess a magical quality that made them instinctively believe him.
"Impossible!" Nina King was the first to snap out of it, her voice sharp. "That’s impossible! Stop spouting nonsense! Believe it or not, I’ll have security throw you out right now!"
Vivian Quinn moved to the man’s side and whispered, "I know you’re trying to help me, but you don’t have to exaggerate so much."
"I’m not exaggerating." The man smiled. "Miss Quinn, this is indeed an unlimited card. You could buy this entire mall with it if you wanted to."
Vivian Quinn: "..."
The crowd: "..."
"You don’t see many people who can lie so brazenly these days. But I’m in no mood to stand here and listen to a bodyguard spin tall tales." Nina King yelled, "Security! Where’s security? Get over here and throw these two out!"
"What’s going on here?" a man in a sharp suit hurried over. "Who’s causing a disturbance?"
"Manager, you’re just in time." The sales clerk rushed forward and explained the situation in detail.
After listening to the explanation, the manager was about to order the two troublemakers to be removed when his eyes fell on the bank card in Rachel Quinn’s hand. His expression changed instantly. "Is that the card?"
"Yes," Rachel Quinn said, quite proudly. "It’s my father’s card, President Silas Quinn."
The corner of the manager’s mouth twitched. "How could this possibly be Silas Quinn’s card? This is a top-tier, globally limited unlimited card. In all of Aethelgard, I believe only Chairman Ethan Grant has one! This card is a symbol of ultimate status. It can buy anything that has a price tag!"
The crowd: "..."
Vivian Quinn stared at the man beside her in disbelief. ’He was actually right?’
She hadn’t even known that Jett Sterling had given her an unlimited card!
Rachel Quinn’s phone rang. She scrambled to answer it. "Dad?"
"Rachel, I made a mistake. The card isn’t missing. Your mother took it to go shopping."
The world seemed to spin before Rachel Quinn’s eyes, and she nearly fainted. Her face burned with humiliation.
Vivian Quinn smiled faintly. "Now that it’s been confirmed this card doesn’t belong to Silas Quinn, I believe I can sue these two for slander, correct?"
The manager said with the utmost respect, "Of course, ma’am. You are our most distinguished guest. If you wish, I can contact a lawyer for you."
"Excellent." Vivian Quinn plucked the black card from Rachel Quinn’s hand. "Then I’ll use the money on this very card to hire the best lawyers to sue them."
The color drained from Rachel Quinn’s face, her expression a spectacular mixture of shock and fury.
Nina King, however, just glared at Vivian Quinn, looking like she wanted to tear her limb from limb.
Vivian Quinn didn’t waste another breath on them. She pointed to the blue suit from earlier. "Please wrap this up for me."
"Yes, of course, right away." The sales clerk scrambled to comply.
The manager personally carried the wrapped suit and escorted Vivian Quinn out of the store.
As they walked out of the mall, Vivian Quinn finally spoke up. "Mr. Quinn, how did you know that card was an unlimited card?"
"My boss happens to have one, so I recognized it."
"I see. Well, thank you for stepping in to help me today."
"It was nothing."
"I’ll be sure to treat you to dinner sometime to thank you properly."
"Alright."
The two of them soon parted ways.
Vivian Quinn took out her phone, eager to call Jett Sterling.
She wanted to tell him that she’d bought him a very handsome suit!
The call connected, and suddenly, a phone rang from somewhere behind her.
Vivian Quinn instinctively turned and saw Zachary Quinn, who hadn’t gotten far, pulling a ringing phone from his pocket...
