Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Is the Baby Still There?

Vivian Quinn’s face went white. She quickly reached down, and her hand came away covered in blood!

She trembled violently, the color draining from her face. ’My baby...’

The words had barely left her lips when her vision went black and she lost consciousness.

...

When Vivian Quinn awoke again, the first thing she saw was an unfamiliar white ceiling.

A sudden memory hit her, and she shot up in bed. "No!"

"Vivian." A familiar voice spoke as a large, cool hand enveloped hers. "Don’t be afraid. It’s okay now."

"Jett Sterling?" Vivian turned to him, her voice frantic. "I was bleeding! The baby! Is the baby okay?"

"Vivian, listen to me," the man explained gently. "The doctor already examined you. You’re not pregnant. You were bleeding because you got your period."

"What did you say?" Vivian stared at him in disbelief. "That’s impossible. I took two pregnancy tests, and they both said I was pregnant!"

"Are you just saying that because you’re afraid I can’t handle losing the baby?"

"Vivian, I’m not lying to you. The pregnancy tests must have been faulty and given you a false positive."p>

"...Is that really true?"

"Yes."

A heavy weight settled in Vivian’s chest. She muttered to herself, "I wasn’t pregnant... There was never a baby..."

"Don’t be sad." Jett Sterling pulled her into a hug, kissing the top of her head. "Vivian, I’m sorry..."

"Why are you apologizing? I should be the one saying sorry. I got your hopes up for nothing." Vivian didn’t want to cry, but for some reason, tears began to stream down her face uncontrollably. "I’m so sorry, Jett Sterling..."

She had been looking forward to this baby’s arrival. So, so much.

She had even pictured what the baby would look like—with Jett’s eyes and her mouth.

And now, to be told so suddenly that it was all in her head, that the baby she was so excited for never existed... it was too much to accept.

Listening to her sobs, a sharp pain lanced through Jett Sterling’s heart. He held her tighter. "Vivian, it’s okay. Please don’t cry."

Vivian rested in his arms until she was cried out. Then, she spoke. "Someone kidnapped me. They tried to rape me."

"I’ll find out who was behind it."

"Someone saved me. Do you know who it was?"

"I don’t know. You were just dropped off at the hospital entrance. That’s when I was notified."

"Huh?" Vivian frowned. "But wasn’t it a man in a trench coat who brought me here?"

"No."

"How can that be? He’s the one who saved my life. I wanted to thank him properly."

"If he didn’t want to reveal his identity, then let’s respect that. If you see him again, you can thank him then."

"Okay." Vivian lay back down. "I hope I get the chance to repay him. I would have been done for today if it weren’t for him."

Jett Sterling stroked her face. "You get some rest. I’ll stay here with you."

"You don’t have to. Your injuries are just starting to heal. You should go home and rest. This is a hospital; I’ll be safe."

"Listen to me. Sleep." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

Vivian closed her eyes and quickly fell asleep.

Jett Sterling waited until she was asleep, then maneuvered his wheelchair out of the room and into the lounge next door.

"Master Sterling!" Easton Rivers rushed over, looking frazzled. He handed Jett a report. "Take a look at this!"

Jett Sterling took it. Written in bold letters were the words: HIV Positive.

Jett Sterling was silent.

"Master Sterling, this was found at the scene. Mrs. Sterling has HIV! You need to get tested right away!"p>

Jett Sterling gave him a look one might reserve for a complete idiot, then tore the report to shreds and threw it in the trash can. "It’s fake."

"...Huh?"

"You don’t know her," Jett Sterling said calmly. "If she really had HIV, you think she would’ve kept it from me and married me?"

Easton Rivers was speechless. ’As if you know her so well!’

Easton Rivers didn’t dare say that out loud. He could only ask, "Then why would Mrs. Sterling be carrying something like that?"

Jett Sterling’s gaze darkened. "In her current condition, she can’t even run fast if she’s in danger. She just wanted a way to protect herself."

Understanding dawned on Easton Rivers. "I see. Mrs. Sterling is brilliant!"

"It’s a shame she’s still too naive to fend off these kinds of underhanded tactics," Jett Sterling’s expression turned frigid. "I told you to have men protect her. Is this what you call protection?"

Easton Rivers felt an immense pressure that nearly took his breath away.

"I’m sorry, Master Sterling. Mrs. Sterling is very vigilant, and we were afraid to follow too closely in case she noticed us. We never expected something like this to happen so soon." Easton Rivers dropped to his knees. "I’ve already looked into it. The three men were hired thugs—the kind who’ll do anything for money. But it was a cash deal, and they don’t show their faces, so we can’t trace who hired them yet."

"Do we even need to investigate?" Jett Sterling sneered. "Who else could it be but the Grant Family?"

"So, should we make a move on the Grant Family directly?"

"They dared to touch my wife. Of course, they’ll pay the price."

"And the three men who kidnapped Mrs. Sterling?"

A murderous intent filled the man’s eyes. "Get rid of them."

"No!" Vivian’s panicked cry suddenly echoed from the next room. "Don’t touch my baby!"

Jett Sterling rushed back to her side. She was clearly having a nightmare. Her eyes were closed, her brow was furrowed, and her hands were clenched tightly on the blanket as her head tossed restlessly.

"Vivian, I’m here." Jett Sterling took her hand. "Don’t be afraid."

The young woman’s grip on the blanket slowly loosened, and she subconsciously clutched the man’s hand. She was still muttering, "My baby... help me... save my baby..."

A thousand needles of pain pricked at Jett Sterling’s heart. He closed his eyes, hiding his anguish. "Vivian, I’m sorry..."

...

The next time she woke, it was morning.

Vivian opened her eyes to find that her hands were tightly gripping Jett Sterling’s.

He was asleep in his wheelchair, his eyes closed.

’Did I hold his hand all night like this?’

Vivian quickly released his hand, grabbed a blanket from the side, and gently draped it over him.

The sleeping man’s eyes snapped open, like a predator startled from its slumber. A cold, fierce light flashed in their depths, making Vivian jump.

"Did I scare you?" The ferocity vanished, and Jett Sterling gripped her shoulders, his voice low and gentle. "How are you feeling? Does anything hurt?"

"I’m much better," Vivian said. "You didn’t go home to sleep last night?"

The man’s lips curled, a smile spreading in his eyes. "My wife couldn’t bear to let me go. She held my hand and wouldn’t let go, so I couldn’t leave."

"Oh, I’m sorry..." Vivian’s cheeks flushed. "I don’t know what came over me..."

The words had barely left her mouth when an inopportune sound broke the silence. GROWL...

Jett Sterling’s eyes dropped to her growling stomach. "Let’s go home and get something to eat."

"Okay."

When they got home, breakfast was already prepared.

As they ate, Vivian asked, "How much did the hospital stay cost last night?"

Jett Sterling frowned. "What do you mean?"

"I want to pay you back."

"Mrs. Sterling, don’t forget who you are."

Vivian was a little confused. "And who am I?"

The man’s face darkened, his lips thinning into a straight line. "You’re my wife. Do we really need to keep such a clear tally of expenses? Are you going to offer to pay me for room and board next?"

"Well, if you need it, I suppose I could..."

CRACK!
