Chapter 202: Chapter 202: Suspicious Points

Vivian Quinn’s eyes snapped open. She nudged the man beside her. "Jett, the phone."

Jett Sterling didn’t open his eyes. He reached out, felt for the phone on the nightstand, and answered, "Speak."

Easton Rivers’s voice came through. "Master Sterling, we just got word from the hospital. The young master has been detoxified."

Jett Sterling slowly opened his eyes. "So soon?"

"It’s absolutely true. The young master just woke up, so I’m calling to report it."

"Understood. Keep an eye on the Wentworth Family." Jett Sterling hung up and looked at Vivian Quinn, who was lying beside him. "Vivian, did you figure out the antidote last night?"

"No, I’ll get up and keep working on it now."

"There’s no need. Elle has already been detoxified, and he’s awake."

"Really?" Vivian Quinn sat up, pleasantly surprised. "I’m going to the hospital to see him right now!"

"Not so fast." Jett Sterling grabbed her wrist. "You’re The Phantom Healer, and even you couldn’t develop an antidote overnight. Don’t you find it suspicious that the hospital detoxified him so quickly?"

"What do you mean?" Vivian asked, confused. "There’s a difference between Chinese and Western medicine. Western medicine has broader applications, so it’s normal that they might develop an antidote before I do."

"Let’s not talk about that for now."

"Then let’s go to the hospital."

"Alright."

Vivian Quinn was desperate to see Elle, but Jett Sterling insisted she eat breakfast first.

Vivian Quinn couldn’t win the argument, so she ate a little something and hurried out the door.

When the two of them arrived at the hospital, Shirley Wentworth was feeding Elle congee.

"Elle." Vivian Quinn walked over and asked, "How are you feeling now?"

"Vivian!" Elle saw her and immediately broke into a smile. "Elle is very tired."

"Here, let Vivian take your pulse."

Shirley Wentworth blocked her hand. "Miss Quinn, if you want to take my son’s pulse, shouldn’t you get my permission first?"

Vivian Quinn conceded. "Miss Wentworth, I’d like to take Elle’s pulse. I hope you’ll allow it."

Only then did Shirley Wentworth let go of her, saying haughtily, "I won’t stoop to your level in front of my son. This is the last time. From now on, I will be taking care of Elle, and he’ll be coming back to the Wentworth Family with me after he’s discharged."

Vivian Quinn pressed her lips together and took Elle’s pulse first.

"He’s still very weak. He needs to be properly nursed back to health."

Shirley Wentworth snorted coldly. "I’m his mother. Of course I know my own son’s condition. I don’t need you to remind me."

Just as Vivian Quinn was about to speak, the door to the hospital room was suddenly pushed open. Jett Sterling stood at the entrance, looking at her. "Vivian, come out here for a second."

Vivian Quinn patted Elle’s head and quickly went out. "What is it?"

Jett Sterling led her aside to talk. "The doctor said they were at a loss last night and only used the most conservative treatments."

"That’s impossible." Vivian Quinn frowned. "I studied Elle’s blood sample. Although the poison is unknown, its toxins are complex. It can’t be neutralized by ordinary medicine."

"I know, or else you wouldn’t have stayed up into the small hours of the morning," Jett Sterling said. "There’s only one possibility now. Someone secretly gave Elle the antidote during the night. And last night, Shirley Wentworth was here taking care of him."

Vivian Quinn was in disbelief. "Are you saying Shirley Wentworth gave Elle the antidote? So the poison Elle was given..."

Jett Sterling nodded. "Didn’t you already investigate? No one at home gave Elle anything unusual to eat, except for the cookies Vincent Wentworth brought. From what I’ve learned, Shirley Wentworth made those cookies, and Elle has always loved them."

"You mean Shirley Wentworth poisoned the cookies!" A chill ran down Vivian Quinn’s spine. "Why would she poison Elle?"

"It’s a move against you, and a way to take Elle back. What better excuse than for him to be poisoned and vomit blood at our house?"

"She’d disregard Elle’s health just to achieve her own goals? He’s so young, how could she do it!" Vivian Quinn’s face flushed with anger. "I’m going to confront her!"

"Vivian, she’s a lunatic. Arguing with her is beneath you." Jett Sterling held her back. "There’s no direct evidence for this yet. If you question her now, she’ll just use it as an excuse to turn the tables and blame you. So, I’ll handle this. Don’t get involved."

Vivian Quinn hesitated. "She’s Elle’s biological mother. I really don’t have the standing or the right to question her about anything. But you’re different."

"Good girl. Let’s go home for now."

Just as the two of them reached the elevators, Elle’s cry suddenly came from behind them. "Vivian, don’t go!"

Vivian Quinn turned to see Elle, barefoot and in a hospital gown, running toward her!

A sharp pain lanced through her heart. She rushed forward, crouched down, and hugged him. "Elle, why did you come out?"

Elle hugged her neck tightly. "Vivian, take me home!"

"Elle!" Shirley Wentworth chased after him. "Mommy told you, from now on you can only live with Mommy."

"I don’t want to!" Elle refused, crying. "I want to be with Vivian!"

Shirley Wentworth said patiently, "Elle, Mommy can’t live without you either. You were sick last night, and Mommy cried all night. Can you bear to leave Mommy all alone?"

Elle said stubbornly, "I can’t bear to leave Vivian. I just want to live with Vivian."

Shirley Wentworth covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face. "Elle, you’re breaking Mommy’s heart..."

Vivian Quinn watched her hypocritical act with a cold expression. But thinking of the suffering Elle had endured, she steeled her heart and gently pushed him away, comforting him, "Elle, your mommy is right. You haven’t recovered yet, so you have to stay in the hospital for now. We can talk about everything else after you get better, okay?"

’With Jett Sterling here, I could forcibly take Elle away, but Shirley is his biological mother. Without proof that she was the one who poisoned him, she could visit him at any time.’

’Given how unhinged Shirley is, if she were to drug Elle again, the consequences would be unimaginable.’

’I can’t take that risk!’

’Keeping Elle with Shirley for now is actually the safest option!’

Elle asked pitifully, "Then when I get better, can I go home with Vivian?"

"We’ll discuss it then. Your job right now is to be a good boy, eat your meals, get your sleep, and get better quickly."

Only then did Elle nod obediently. "Okay."

"Good boy."

Shirley Wentworth seized the opportunity to pick Elle up. She shot Vivian Quinn a glance, a triumphant smile spreading across her face, and returned to the hospital room.

On the way back to Sycamore Bay, Vivian Quinn’s heart was burning with anxiety. She suddenly gripped Jett Sterling’s hand and said, "Jett, we have to get custody of Elle!"

Jett Sterling raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure?"

"Yes. I’ve always tried to be understanding of Shirley Wentworth. Even when she was rough with Elle, as much as it broke my heart, I never considered this. But now, she’s dared to poison him. That’s not something a normal mother would do. If Elle stays with her, the consequences will be unimaginable!"

"Vivian, since you’ve made up your mind, of course I’ll do as you say."

"But what about Ruby Wentworth..." Vivian hesitated. "You said she has a Death Exemption Token."

"I’ve already fulfilled my grandfather’s promise to her when I let the Wentworth Family off the hook last time."

"You mean you only had to agree to her terms once?"

"Of course. Otherwise, wouldn’t she be able to hold it over my head forever?"

"That’s true. That’s a relief." Vivian Quinn instructed, "Shirley Wentworth is capable of anything. To get custody back, you have to be fast, ruthless, and precise. Otherwise, there’s no telling what she’ll do next."

"Alright."

Vivian Quinn suddenly remembered something. "By the way, I still feel like there’s something suspicious about Elle’s poisoning..."
