Chapter 113: Chapter 113: Why Did You Marry Me?

Vivian Quinn smiled. "He’s not that shallow."

"Whoa, Boss, something’s off with you. You’re defending Jett Sterling so much!"

Vivian Quinn chuckled. "Don’t worry about me. How are things on your end?"

"Things are great. With Jett Sterling looking out for me, it’s been smooth sailing, and I’ve learned a lot." Shane Shaw’s voice was full of happiness. "Boss, the reason I’m calling at this hour is because I figured Jett should be in the room. I want to thank him personally. Can you pass the phone to him?"

Vivian Quinn’s heart raced. She hurriedly said, "He’s not in the room right now. He went to the study to handle some work."

"Then can you take the phone to him for me?"

"What’s the rush?" Vivian Quinn said. "Just treat him to dinner and thank him in person when you get back."

"That’s true." Shane Shaw finally gave up. "Well, thank him for me for now. I’ll definitely treat him to a nice meal when I return."

"Okay. I’ll talk to you later, then."

Vivian Quinn hung up. Her chest felt as if it were being crushed by a giant rock, so tight that she could barely breathe.

She tossed her phone aside in frustration, rolled over, and tried to force herself to sleep. But no matter how much she tossed and turned, she couldn’t.

Vivian Quinn felt even worse. She could only pick up her phone again, but then she realized that she had somehow called Jett Sterling’s number—and they had been on the line for twenty minutes!

Stunned, Vivian Quinn put the phone to her ear but heard nothing from the other end.

"Hello?" Vivian Quinn asked tentatively. "Jett Sterling?"

"I’m here," a low, cold male voice replied. "Is something wrong?"

Vivian Quinn’s heart plummeted to an icy abyss. "No, nothing. I must have dialed you by accident. Sorry about that."

"As long as it’s nothing. I’m hanging up."

Vivian Quinn stared at the ended call, a self-deprecating smile tugging at her lips.

’It seems Jett Sterling has created too many illusions for me lately,’ she thought. ’So many that I’ve fallen deeper and deeper. Now that I suddenly want to pull away, my heart aches as if it’s being sliced by a knife!’

Vivian Quinn curled up under the covers, feeling as if a cold wind were blowing right through her. She shivered uncontrollably.

She couldn’t hold back her tears at all, letting them flow freely as she buried her face in her pillow and sobbed aloud...

...

When the alarm woke Vivian Quinn, she was completely dazed.

She couldn’t remember when she had fallen asleep, only that the sky had been starting to lighten.

Vivian Quinn shook off her grogginess, went to the bathroom to wash her face, then took out her makeup bag and applied a flawless look to hide her dark circles.

She looked at the radiant, beautiful face in the mirror and curved her lips into a smile.

’I will end this marriage in the best way possible,’ she resolved.

Her stomach suddenly RUMBLED. Vivian Quinn grabbed a small bottle of the instant bird’s nest soup that Ian Sterling had bought for her and ate it before heading out.

Just as she opened the door, a handsome young face appeared before her!

"Shane Shaw?" Vivian Quinn was both surprised and delighted. "What are you doing back here?"

Shane Shaw’s expression was a little dark, and he had faint bruises under his eyes. It was obvious he hadn’t slept well.

"Boss, why did you lie to me?" Shane Shaw demanded.

It suddenly clicked for Vivian Quinn. "What did you find out? Did you come back just for this?"

"Ian Sterling told me you were getting a divorce. I was already on the plane when I called you last night. I just landed at Aethelgard Airport an hour ago."

Vivian Quinn looked at him. "I wasn’t planning on hiding it from you. I just didn’t know how to say it on the phone last night. I was thinking I’d wait a few days and then tell you slowly..."

"Boss, why are you getting a divorce?"

"Didn’t Ian Sterling tell you why?"

"He just said briefly that Jett Sterling was a scumbag who betrayed you. Boss, logically, Jett Sterling shouldn’t be that kind of person!"

"I didn’t think he was that kind of person either, but seeing is believing. Besides, he admitted to a few things himself." Vivian Quinn shook her head wearily. "Shane, his views on marriage don’t align with mine. I really can’t accept it."

"Boss, I feel like something’s strange about this," Shane Shaw analyzed. "When Jett Sterling married you, it completely blew my mind. After all, you were ’ugly’ and had a limp back then, and there was no way he could have known you were this beautiful. That’s why I think his love for you is real."

"Now that your leg is healed and your face is fine, he starts betraying you? Could it be he really is a Merv? Boss, that doesn’t make any sense."

Vivian Quinn lowered her gaze. "Shane, you’re wrong. I’m not perfect..."

Shane Shaw froze for a moment before he understood. His expression turned even darker. "Boss, there’s no point in bringing that up. It’s not like Jett Sterling didn’t know you had a child with someone else. Did he look down on you for it? He didn’t! Don’t forget, the night he found out, he risked his life to save you!"

"Even I have to admit I can’t compare to that kind of love. I’m not sure I could have rushed out to protect someone else at a critical moment like that. If you tell me he isn’t madly in love with you, I’d die before I believed it!"

"That’s why, Boss, I think this whole thing is suspicious. Jett Sterling isn’t a fickle person. Even if he were, it’s impossible for him to change so drastically all of a sudden!"

Vivian Quinn was stunned. ’How could I ever forget that!’

’Wasn’t it through these moments of shock and emotion, one after another, that my heart fell completely for Jett Sterling?’

"Shane," Vivian Quinn heard herself say, "are you trying to tell me that what I saw, and what I felt, was all fake?"

"Boss, I don’t know. I’m just suspicious because Jett Sterling’s change is too irrational."

Vivian Quinn looked up at him. "What if your intuition is right? Then I can’t divorce him, can I? I should go and get a clear answer from him, right?"

"Of course, Boss! Marriage isn’t child’s play. You can’t just get a divorce without getting to the bottom of it!"

A faint spark suddenly ignited in Vivian Quinn’s heart, which had felt like dead ashes. "You’re right. Jett Sterling risked his life to save me. I can’t give up on him this easily. I’m going to find him and ask him to his face!"

"Boss, I’ll go with you!"

By the time the two of them arrived at the Civil Affairs Bureau by taxi, Jett Sterling’s car had just pulled up as well.

A bodyguard took a wheelchair out of the trunk and helped Jett Sterling into it.

The man looked up and saw Vivian Quinn.

Their eyes met through the curtain of rain, and they both froze for a second.

Jett Sterling quickly composed himself and wheeled himself under the eaves. "It’s almost time for our appointment. Let’s go in."

"Jett Sterling, I have something to ask you." Vivian Quinn walked up to him. "Why did you marry me?"

The man in the wheelchair was taken aback for a moment, then smiled faintly. "Is there any point in asking that now?"

"Of course there is." Vivian Quinn was dead serious. "I want to know."

The man was silent for a moment before speaking. "Because I slept with you, it felt pretty good, and I wanted to keep sleeping with you. Is that reason enough?"

Not only was Shane Shaw standing beside them, but so were several bodyguards. All of them looked on, at a loss.

Vivian Quinn’s face went pale. She wished she could find a hole to crawl into and disappear!

"Is that all?" she pressed, unwilling to accept it. "I don’t believe that’s all I am to you!"
