Chapter 145: Another side mission

"Join the alchemy tournament."

It was a very simple notification, but the meaning of the words were anything but simple.

It was another side mission that the system released in response to the Great Elder talking about the alchemy tournament.

After being surprised for a bit, I asked the system, "I don’t know anything about alchemy, how can I join the tournament?" 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

The system just calmly replied, "Host, you only have to join the tournament, there’s no need for you to achieve a high ranking."

"Huh?" I was even more confused when I heard this.

Joining a tournament...it usually meant wanting to perform well and getting a top spot. However, the system’s side mission was just to get me to join the tournament without any expectations.

It almost seemed too good to be true...

Like there was something that the system wasn’t telling me.

"Host, please do not doubt the good intentions of the system. This is a mission that is done for the benefit of the host."

"Is it?" I couldn’t help asking.

But this time, the system didn’t say anything which made me feel even more like there was something that the system was hiding from me. It seemed like there was something that the system just didn’t want to tell me about...

Eventually, the system had no choice but to say, "Host, this system is here for the host and the host alone. The system would never do anything to harm the host."

I couldn’t help being surprised when I heard this, but eventually I said, "I know. Sometimes I even think that you’re too good for me."

The system just simply said, "The system was created for the host, so the system belongs to the host and no one else."

"I’m counting on you then." That was all I could say when I heard this.

The system didn’t respond, but it was clear that a small bond had been forged between us because of this.

Now what I had to do was...

"I’ll join that alchemy tournament." I suddenly said, cutting off the elders who had been discussing who to send.

All of them were surprised by me suddenly saying this before knitting their brows.

Elder Wang, who was in charge of the Alchemy Hall, narrowed his eyes to look at me before asking, "What do you know about alchemy? Do you even know anything?"

I just shook my head and said, "I know nothing at all about alchemy."

It wasn’t just Elder Wang, the lips of all the elders twitched when they heard this.

It was clear that there was only one thing that was on their minds...

"If you don’t know anything about alchemy, why are you trying to join an alchemy tournament?"

They just looked at me as if they were waiting for me to say anything else to defend myself, but I just stood there with a calm look on my face like I wasn’t bothered at all by the way that they were looking at me.

I even had a look of confidence, like I was almost certain that I would be allowed to join.

There was an irritated feeling that filled Elder Wang when he heard this that kept growing until he couldn’t help saying, "What do you think you’re doing? Do you think that this is a joke? This is an important tournament for our sect and you’re just..."

Before he could finish the scolding that he had prepared, the Great Elder suddenly raised his hand to stop him.

Elder Wang looked at him with a confused look, but the Great Elder just shook his head before turning to look at Lin Fan.

Narrowing his eyes, Yao Fu slowly said, "You just want to enter the tournament? Is there a special reason?"

I was surprised to hear this from him, but there was a trace of admiration that filled me when I heard this.

As expected of the Great Elder, he was able to pick up that there was something else even though I didn’t say anything. After all, it wasn’t as if I could just straight up admit that I had something like the system, right?

So the only thing that I could do was act the same way as before and hope that someone picked something up.

With a smile, I said, "I just want to gain some experience."

All of the elders looked shocked when they heard this before looking like they wanted to beat me up. Elder Wang was the one that looked like he wanted to flay me the most, but he was being held back by the Great Elder.

Yao Fu just kept looking at me for a bit with eyes that seemed like he was scoping me out.

In the end, he said with a nod, "Alright, we can give you a spot if that’s what you really want."

"Thank you, Great Elder." I said while cupping my hands and giving a bow to him.

There was sincere respect for the Great Elder in my voice at this moment since I could tell that he wasn’t just doing this on a whim. It seemed like he had picked up on something and he was following this thing that he had picked up on.

But I also knew that I couldn’t leave it like this since there would certainly be people that would be unhappy because of this. So it wasn’t as if I could just take that spot without doing something to make up for it.

As a prodigal young master, this was what I did best.

If there was anything that I had, it was money thanks to my system.

And if there was anything that people couldn’t resist, it was money.

That was where greed came from in this world.

I turned to Elder Wang who was surprised to see me suddenly turn to look at him.

Elder Wang slowly said, "What is..."

Before he could finish, I suddenly said, "Elder Wang, I’ll provide some compensation to the Alchemy Hall!"
