Chapter 244: Chapter 244 Qiu Ye and Gu Yan

Tang Mubei was driving swiftly on the deserted mountain roads at night. There was a bend ahead, and beyond it was the road back to the city. He kept his eyes on the front, suddenly turning the steering wheel for the curve, the tires screeching harshly against the ground.

Tang Mubei’s speed only kept increasing.

In his mind, all he could think about were the words Old Sir Tang had said.

No wonder Qiu Ye showed signs of softening but still refused to accept him; it turned out because he was the son of her enemy.

Facing him every day without saying a word, who knows how much she had to endure on her own.

The wind outside the car window whistled past, cutting painfully into his cheeks, yet he seemed to feel nothing.

It was not yet nine o’clock, and there were still many cars coming and going on the roads in the city. Yet, Tang Mubei did not slow down, steering smoothly through the traffic. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Finally, he drove into a residential complex and parked under a certain building.

As he pushed open the car door to get out, he suddenly stopped.

He looked up at a certain window. It was pitch-black. He remembered that Qiu Ye had taken on a special operation case and had left with her team.

She had been gone for five days.

Leaning against the car door, Tang Mubei slightly lowered his head, and his shadow stretched long under the streetlamp, lonely and desolate.

He felt for a cigarette in his pocket but remembered Qiu Ye didn’t like people smoking, so he quit.

But tonight he felt really agitated, so he decided to walk to the convenience store open in the complex to buy cigarettes.

The convenience store owner knew him well. Seeing him come in, looking somewhat surprised, said, "Mr. Tang? Didn’t Officer Qiu go out on a case? Didn’t Mr. Tang go with her?"

"No," Tang Mubei said, "Just a pack of cigarettes."

The owner promptly took out the best pack and handed it to him.

"How much?"

"Sixty."

"And a lighter."

The owner also took out an ordinary lighter, "I’ll give it to you for free."

"Thanks," Tang Mubei said, thanked him, and took out his wallet to pay.

The owner chatted with him casually, "Is it because Officer Qiu doesn’t like you smoking, so you quit?"

"Yeah."

"Mr. Tang really likes Officer Qiu, huh."

"Yeah."

"So why did Mr. Tang come over when Officer Qiu isn’t here?"

This time Tang Mubei paused slightly and then replied, "I miss her."

The owner raised an eyebrow, "If you miss her, why not go look for her?"

"No need, she’ll be back soon."

Tang Mubei paid the bill, and with that, he left.

The owner watched his back, watching him walk towards his car, leaning against the car door, unwrapped the cigarette pack, lit one, took a few puffs, and looked up at the floor where Qiu Ye lived. Even though no one was inside, he kept looking.

He stayed there, smoking one cigarette after another, and the cigarette butts piled up at his feet.

...

In the noisy and bustling bar, colorful and dazzling lights flashed continuously, the sound of music accompanying the frantically moving bodies of men and women on the dance floor—passionate and chaotic.

In a corner, a woman wearing a black short-sleeve shirt and pants sat with her legs crossed, her body lazily leaning on the sofa, squinting her eyes as if intently watching the men and women dancing on the dance floor.

The hand casually placed on her knee tapped rhythmically.

Soon, a man with a crew cut ran over, plopped down on the sofa, gulped down a large glass of beer on the table, and after catching his breath, said, "Boss, everything’s ready. When do we start?"

Qiu Ye slowly opened her eyes, her pupils exceptionally bright, the light above flashing by, as if a glow passed over, very beautiful.

Her hand stayed on her knee, nodding lightly, looking forward, "See those delinquent teens over there?"

Guangzi followed her line of sight and looked over. Not far ahead was a table of young people, the type obviously not interested in studying and only hanging around in bars, particularly arrogant.

"I see them, what’s the order?"

"Hmm...," Qiu Ye dragged out her voice, saying, "Go provoke them, it’s best if they start a fight, the bigger the scene, the better."

Guangzi didn’t quite understand why they had to stir up trouble when they were clearly waiting to catch criminals,

but he never questioned his boss’s words. She gave the orders, so he followed.

Guangzi got up and walked to that table, pretending to accidentally knock over their table, which immediately set off the young people’s arrogance.

Guangzi naturally succeeded in arousing their anger, coupled with his intentional provocations, a fight quickly ensued.

Guangzi was a detective after all, much better skilled than these amateurs; they gained no advantage even if they all attacked together.

Qiu Ye watched Guangzi and the group of young people create chaos in the bar with satisfaction, then reached for her ear where a mini walkie-talkie was clipped.

"Get ready, keep your eyes wide open for the people coming out of the door, don’t freeze up at the critical moment."

Hearing a synchronized response in her ear, Qiu Ye leisurely stood up, her bright eyes scanning the chaotic crowd, finally locking on a sneaky man heading towards the bar door.

Qiu Ye’s mouth curled into a smile, stepping towards that person, "The target has appeared, heading towards the door."

Qiu Ye had both hands in her pockets, calmly following three meters behind the man, tracking him out of the bar.

In an instant, three people jumped out from the shadows, lunging at the man. He was startled but quick to react, agilely dodging the three and rapidly running away.

The three were also quite skilled. Seeing him escape, they immediately changed direction to continue the chase.

Qiu Ye, who had followed him out of the bar and witnessed this scene, couldn’t help but sigh and shake her head.

At critical moments, it still needed her to make a move.

She leisurely pulled a marble out of her pocket and flicked it, hitting the man in the back of the head.

The man cried out in pain, slowed down, and that was the chance for the three to catch up and pin him to the ground.

"Police, don’t move!" Then handcuffing the man.

"Get up!" One of them rudely hauled him up, facing the approaching Qiu Ye.

"Boss."

Qiu Ye’s gaze swept over the three before finally settling on the captured man. She smiled faintly, "Buddy, ran quite a distance, didn’t you?"

The man seemed quite afraid of Qiu Ye, avoiding her gaze, but Qiu Ye didn’t mind, "Just take him back."

"Boss, you’re not coming back?"

Qiu Ye rolled her neck, "Been staking out here for five days to catch this guy, didn’t even get to enjoy myself. You guys escort him back and have the local police assist, I’ll head back tomorrow."

"Yes, boss."

The three escorted the criminal away, while Guangzi also ran out of the bar.

"Damn, I’m exhausted, dealing with a bunch of clueless youngsters and having to deliberately not win, it’s honestly tougher than catching a crook."

Qiu Ye patted his shoulder, "Hard work being a public servant."

Guangzi casually waved his hand, "No big deal."

"Xiao Nie and the others are escorting the suspect to the local precinct tonight, go with them and take charge. Also, tell them to cancel their leave after returning and sharpen their skills."

"Uh... didn’t they catch the guy?"

Qiu Ye looked troubled, "I really don’t want to say they are part of my team."

Guangzi, "...Alright. By the way, boss, why did you want me to provoke those youngsters?"

"They looked easy to anger, not much brains, and that guy knew we were staking out at the bar. After five days, his patience was gone; causing a little chaos would make him think he could escape amidst it."

Indeed, he lacked patience, destined to be caught.

"I see." Realizing the reason, Guangzi admired his boss even more, then obediently left.

Qiu Ye wandered aimlessly down the street.

Suddenly, a man rushed past her, clutching a backpack, followed closely by a woman with an angry face.

"Stop! Give me back the bag!" the woman shouted loudly, accelerating her pace.

Qiu Ye raised an eyebrow; just caught a fleeing criminal, and now a bag snatcher came up.

As a cop with a sense of justice, she turned slowly, pulling her hands from her pockets, having to act as the hero once again.

Qiu Ye’s speed was faster than the woman’s, and even faster than the bag snatcher’s. Within a minute, she caught up, flicked a marble, hitting the back of the man’s leg, causing him to stumble and fall flat, the bag slipping from his hand.

Qiu Ye went over to pick up the bag from the ground, "Today you’re unlucky to run into me. A word of advice: you’re young and capable, don’t engage in these criminal acts. I won’t take you to the precinct this time."

The man got up from the ground, glaring at Qiu Ye, "Damn woman, mind your own business!"

"Oh, quite the temper."

The man suddenly reached to snatch the bag back, but Qiu Ye sidestepped and locked his hand, twisting it so he couldn’t move.

"..."

"Let me go!" the man struggled.

"Brat, don’t let me catch you again next time." Qiu Ye released him and turned away with the bag in hand.

Knowing Qiu Ye was not someone to mess with, he dared not continue entangling and ran off.

The woman who had her bag stolen caught up, and Qiu Ye returned her bag.

"Thank you! Thanks a lot!"

"Aren’t you going to check if anything’s missing?"

"No need, there wasn’t anything valuable in there, I just don’t like people taking my stuff."

Qiu Ye was surprised, that was a reason she hadn’t heard before.

"Miss, thank you for getting my bag back. I’m Gu Yan, what’s your name?"

"Qiu Ye."

"Nice to meet you." Gu Yan extended her hand, smiling warmly. Qiu Ye shook it, not minding the woman.

"Miss Qiu, have you had dinner?" Gu Yan asked, looking at her watch, noting it was eleven already. She hesitated for a moment but continued, "Uh, would you like to grab a late-night snack together? It’d also be a way to thank you for reclaiming my bag."

Qiu Ye straightforwardly nodded, "Sure, I’m a bit hungry too." She was just out for a stroll and hadn’t planned on anything.

"Also, you can call me by my name or Ye Zi, Miss Qiu sounds awkward."

Gu Yan smiled, "Alright, you can just call me Gu Yan then."
