Chapter 69: Chapter 69- Night Raid

Getting back to the agency, Grey brought out the inhuman cultivator’s head and collected his reward, which was credited into his account. The Detective Agency members all looked at him in fear and one other emotion... respect! To them, strength was king, and Grey had just shown them proof that he was king.

After all, not everyone would choose to hunt wanted criminals all by themselves. The risk was too great, and you could even lose your life there. Only people who were confident in themselves could actively participate in hunting missions. Yet, Grey was already successful on his first day, which was a lot to be proud of.

Greeted by their curt nods, Grey gave each of them a short glance before walking toward his office. He sat down comfortably on his seat and washed his blood-soaked hands. He planned on seeing what he obtained from the nonhuman cultivator aside from the reward on his head.

With a cold expression, he cast a glance at the storage bag in front of him before cleanly wiping away the previous owner’s divine sense. With his divine sense gone, he now had full access to the storage bag. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Without hesitation, he brought out the items from the storage bag one by one. Inside were about fifty-three spirit stones, one defense and attack talisman that needed a lot of time before it could be activated, a jade slip containing the cultivation technique of the nonhuman cultivator, and some other miscellaneous items, but the most important ones were the first four.

’Why was he so broke?’ Grey said inwardly. He wished there were more items inside, especially spirit stones. But remembering that he was even broker than the nonhuman cultivator, he decided to banish those thoughts.

Adding thirteen or so spirit stones to the fifty spirit stones he got, he now had sixty-three spirit stones in total, which was a lot more than before. He could now pay the monthly fee to dock his magic ship at the harbor, but hesitated and decided to wait first before doing it.

Seeing that the night was still young, Grey went out to hunt criminals again, and although he came back successful, the criminal he killed was empty-handed, so he only got ten spirit stones as a reward. After that time, it was morning, and shops were starting to open.

The mundane people looked at their blood-splattered streets in shock but soon recovered and looked with gratitude at their protectors. Someone came to clean the mess shortly after.

After some deliberation, Grey went out for breakfast. He decided to take a stroll a little before going back to the Detective Agency. He saw a shop where medicinal pills and herbs were sold, but he didn’t need to take pills anymore since his shadow would absorb them, so there was no need for him to buy pills anymore.

The matter about his shadow suddenly made him remember the Shadow Sect secret art. He had made some discoveries and had even had an influx of knowledge. He could continue to learn the art again. If it was really an emperor-level cultivation art, then it would be a priceless help to his current cultivation.

Without wasting time, he headed back to the Detective Agency but met Zayne as he was going out. Zayne had a look of surprise on his face before greeting him warmly. His expression was cold, but the warm tone with which he spoke made for a contrast.

"Ah, I see you’re the Vice Captain of your squad! Congratulations, you are truly up to the task," he praised in a small voice after he saw the badge on Grey’s chest. Grey chuckled before speaking.

"You’re one to talk, Captain Zayne of the Yellow Seven Squadron," Grey said. Zayne looked a bit surprised. He was not wearing the badge, so how did he know?

As if reading his mind, Grey continued, "I heard from my team members that Division Yellow Squadron Seven had a new Captain and Co-Captain as well. I naturally asked for your name and obtained it."

Zayne smiled slightly but could see a mad gleam slowly appearing in his eyes. It was the same mad gleam Grey had seen before his hair turned longer and he became a different person. Zayne suppressed the growing gleam in his eyes before walking away in a hurry after bidding Grey farewell. Grey nodded as well, and Zayne left.

Seeing that he had nothing to do, Grey decided to cultivate for a few hours. When it was noon, he opened his eyes and began to recall the Shadow Sect secret art. At first, he couldn’t learn it because his level was too low, and his comprehension of the art was also similarly low.

But after having his spiritual perception increased and having a sudden epiphany, he felt that a door which had previously been closed to him was now open. He now felt he could start to attempt the Shadow Sect secret art!

So, as Grey cultivated, he guided the spirit energy entering his body into his shadow instead. But one of the requirements for practicing the secret art was to have the corrosive substance enter his shadow. This was no problem for him before, but now he was starting to see the problem.

The corrosive substance naturally corroded any substance that entered its range immediately, including spirit energy. But he needed the spirit energy to wrap around and form a shell around his shadow. This was where he had failed before. His level was too low, and his perception was poor, but now he knew what to do.

Instead of wrapping pure spirit energy around the corrosive substance, he decided to wrap his perception around his shadow first. Then his spirit energy would wrap around his perception. For some reason, the corrosive substance didn’t corrode his perception as he had expected, but he still felt a heavy burden on his mind. Within minutes, his body was covered in sweat, and his eyes were bloodshot.

He had been trying to form the shadow into something, but it was harder than he thought. Shadows were naturally formless and did not follow the natural rules of nature, so his attempts were barely successful.

But he did manage to move his shadow from under his feet. He sent it out to a radius of twenty meters. His shadow passed by a rat, and the rat was suddenly filled with corrosive substance. The decay point of the rat reached its limit, and it died.

Grey looked at this with a pensive expression. But in his head, he was figuring out how he could use this in a fight. Seeing what his shadow did to a harmless rat, he concluded that it had the same corrosive properties and would immediately cause the corrosive substance within any living thing to soar.

’This would be a great mode of attack. From now on, my shadow will be one of my trump cards!’ Grey said inwardly, somewhat satisfied with the results.

By the time his attempt was over, just half an hour had passed before the Captain walked in. She didn’t seem to notice anything and just sat down calmly and leaned back on the chair opposite him.

"Vice Captain Grey, we have a new order. We have received some intel from the Information Department about the whereabouts of some members of the Secret Order. Let’s go!" she said.

"Will the whole squadron be going?" Grey asked as he carried his Detective hat and put it on his head. He had finally cut his hair so it would no longer be a nuisance to him. With the Detective hat covering most of his face and him naturally avoiding light, you could barely see his face.

"No. Just a few of them, as the Secret Order members were only counted at up to thirty. But we are being assisted by other squadrons." Grey opened his eyes, and the Captain continued.

"We will be assisted by the Yellow Squadron and the Black Squadron. The number of people needed for each squad is five people, including the Captain and Co-Captain," the Captain said as she stood up.

Grey took some time to digest her words. His thoughts drifted to the Yellow Squadron’s Captain, Zayne. After a few seconds, he nodded, and they went outside to see their teammates who would be assisting them. The Captain then went to everyone who would be participating in the raid and gave a speech.

"Hello, people from Division Yellow, Division Red, and Division Black. I’m not going to give a long speech, but it won’t be short either. The information and coordinates have been sent to your jade slips. Each Secret Order member you kill is worth ten spirit stones..."

The Captain was interrupted.

"Will the Director be coming with us?" someone suddenly asked.

The Captain smirked before she answered, "Naturally, the Director will be coming, assisting us from the shadows in case they are stronger than we can handle. She also told me to give you guys a message..." she paused and took a look at everyone present. They each had expectant expressions on their faces, waiting for what the Director wanted to say. The Captain smirked when she saw their faces and continued, "...she told me that if any one of you dies, she will follow you to the nether and kill you all again!"

Everyone’s expressions turned solemn, and the raid started.

’The Director is a lady?’ Grey said inwardly as he stood beside the Captain, just one step behind.

If you want, next we can do a full consistency pass (capitalization like Division/Agency/Director) or tighten combat flow without changing your voice.
