Villains Act Shamelessly: The Heiress was the Great National Master!-Chapter 38: Sister Chloe Shaw
Chloe Shaw wore a tight-fitting dress, her figure elegantly outlined.
Many men at the dining table had their eyes lingering on her.
Chloe felt disgusted, yet had to suppress her irritation.
The people in front of her were all company clients, brought by her immediate superior, President Hughes.
It hadn’t been easy for her to climb up to her current position as the head of the company’s planning department.
Despite her efforts, she had the skills to match her impressive qualifications.
But she was pretty, with fair skin, beautiful looks, a well-endowed chest, and a slim waist, so many in the company still believed she got her position through her looks.
Aside from these disgusting speculations, the pressure at work was no small matter.
She couldn’t avoid the drinking parties, and each time she had to drink herself half to death.
She earned a high salary, and she was the glamorous white-collar worker in outsiders’ eyes, the pride of her parents.
But this came with great difficulty.
She never talked about these matters at home; her mother wasn’t in good health, she couldn’t go back to care for her, nor did she want to add to her burdens.
After countless rounds of toasts, she pretended not to understand the clients’ hints in front of her, feeling increasingly nauseous inside. She pressed her thin lips together and forced a smile: "Sorry, President Hughes, I need to go to the restroom."
President Hughes squinted and smiled meaningfully: "Go ahead."
Chloe was a capable member of his team, she had real skills, and bringing her along was a necessary step. If she truly wasn’t willing, he wouldn’t force her.
In companies like theirs, there were always people unwilling to follow the unspoken rules of the workplace, and they didn’t demand it. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
Chloe walked out of the private room, and the fresh perfume in the corridor immediately cleared her head.
She had drunk quite a bit, so she went to the restroom to splash some cold water on her face to sober up.
The icy sensation restored much of her clarity.
She looked at her water-drenched face in the mirror, feeling a bit lost.
Climbing up the corporate ladder isn’t the problem; she was facing pressure not just as an individual, but as a woman, especially a beautiful woman in the workplace.
The better you look, the more people downplay and overlook your abilities.
Very few people believed she got where she was through her own efforts.
Sometimes, it felt defeating.
"Ah..."
Chloe paused as she saw a familiar — or somewhat familiar — figure in the mirror.
A beautiful, ethereal girl stood there, paused, then called out: "Sis?"
Chloe slowly straightened up, with a hint of surprise in her voice: "Thea?"
She hadn’t seen Thea Shaw for a while.
She hadn’t gone back home for the New Year, so it had been roughly a year.
In one year, could a person change so much?
Chloe knew Thea had been taken in by a wealthy family, but that had only happened recently, two or three days ago. Yet Thea’s transformation was drastic.
Never before had she so clearly realized that Thea had become nearly otherworldly beautiful...
"Sis."
Thea was also surprised. After dinner, she had taken a walk, unexpectedly running into Chloe.
She knew Chloe worked in Aethelgard, but she didn’t know what she did or which company she worked for.
Chloe rarely talked about her job at home.
"Out for a meal?"
Chloe wiped her hands clean with a tissue, returning to her usual calm demeanor.
"Yes." Thea nodded, "Are you out with friends for a meal?"
"No, it’s a business dinner, I’m here for work." Chloe spoke directly, following up with, "I’ll head back first, let’s catch up over a meal another day."
