Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 41: Drama Ends in Discord
He was Li Long’s real target; Xiao Yu was likely just caught in the crossfire. If that was the case, Li Long might still be looking for him.
Wang Jian didn’t rule out this possibility. What worried him most was that Xiao Yu was so beautiful; her appearance might ignite the lust of those two men. I can even imagine a scenario where if Xiao Yu hadn’t been there today, and my sister-in-law had come to call me for dinner instead, she would have been the one kidnapped.
Having been away for so long, Wang Jian had forgotten the wild nature of rural thugs. The country was growing stronger, and large cities were incredibly safe. Abductions were the kind of thing you only saw in TV dramas. This pervasive sense of security was what gave Wang Jian so much confidence when he confronted the two troublemakers at the clinic. Even if he couldn’t win a fight, he knew the state would punish them.
But he had never imagined that two dregs of society like them still existed here, daring to make a move at night—and targeting Ren Yu, no less.
A fire blazed in Wang Jian’s heart, his blood boiling with a rage so intense he was itching to cripple the two thugs. He even regretted not dealing with them decisively right then and there.
Wang Jian was still on the path from the village committee to the Ren household, having gone no more than fifty meters. Suddenly, he heard something fall, followed by the buzzing of a phone scraping against the ground.
The sound came from a small fork in the path nearby. The vibration was especially loud because the village’s side paths were paved with bluestone slabs, which carried the noise a great distance in the silent night, making it crystal clear.
Most of the villagers were middle-aged or elderly, as the younger generation had mostly left for work. It was usually young people who set their phones to vibrate.
Realizing this, Wang Jian immediately sprinted into the fork. Not ten meters in, he saw a phone lying on the ground, its screen casting light from the gap between it and the dirt. He picked it up. The screen was partially cracked, but he could still clearly read the caller ID: "Dad."
It seemed the phone had originally fallen into a nearby haystack, but its incessant vibrating had caused it to slide out. Otherwise, Wang Jian would never have found it. In the darkness, the owner would have had almost no chance of spotting it, even if they weren’t in a panic.
But now, Wang Jian was almost certain this was Ren Yu’s phone. If she was abducted, she wouldn’t have had a chance to worry about a dropped phone. There’s no time to waste; I have to save her.
Wang Jian didn’t answer the call. He let the phone continue to vibrate in his hand as he ventured deeper down the path, carefully observing his surroundings and listening for any sound.
The nearby houses were all empty; the families had all left to find work, a common sight in the mountains. Wang Jian couldn’t even hear a TV, which ironically made his search easier.
After walking a few dozen more meters, he suddenly stopped.
MMPH... MMPH...
He heard a deeply muffled cry. If the person’s mouth weren’t blocked by something, the sound would have been much farther-reaching and sharper.
Wang Jian’s hearing was so keen he could detect a heartbeat without a stethoscope. On a night like this, he could distinguish a human voice from the chirping of insects. The master who taught him this skill probably never imagined it would be used in a situation like this. In truth, many martial artists of old had mastered the skill of sound localization to some degree. Wang Jian was just listening; he was still a long way from reaching that level of expertise.
After roughly pinpointing the direction, Wang Jian began to move closer. The nearer he got, the clearer the sounds became. He could even hear people talking.
When he finally made out the sounds, Wang Jian cursed under his breath. Here he was, anxiously searching for someone, only to stumble upon an intimate moment between a couple. It was utterly exasperating.
After searching the vicinity for a while longer and finding nothing, he gave up and continued toward the Ren household.
When he arrived, he found the courtyard gate wide open and the lights on inside. He could even hear Ren Yu’s voice.
Wang Jian froze, a strange expression creeping onto his face. I’ve been running all over looking for her, and she was at home the whole time? What in the world is going on?
But since she was home, it meant everything was alright. Wang Jian let out a long breath, a wave of relief washing over him as the weight in his heart finally lifted. Only then did he realize that his back was soaked with sweat. From running back and forth in a state of high anxiety, he was already drenched.
Ignoring his discomfort, Wang Jian didn’t just stand there foolishly. He strode inside.
As soon as he entered, he saw Ren Jiacheng and Ren Yu standing over two men who were kneeling before them.
Yes, two men were kneeling.
They were Li Long and Zhao Hu, the same two who had caused trouble earlier in the day.
With a tearful voice, Li Long cried, "Miss, we two brothers are begging you! This afternoon was all my fault, my big mouth. I didn’t really mean what I said! I shouldn’t have talked like that. Please, put in a good word with Doctor Wang for me. Ask him to take a look at my illness. I really don’t want to die."
"We waited on the road for hours just for you, but you thought we were here to hurt you. We chased you all the way, almost up the mountain, before you finally stopped to listen to us."
Li Long sounded like he was starting to complain, but he quickly noticed Ren Yu’s souring expression as she glared at him. He immediately changed his tune. "We scared you, and we apologize. We’re kneeling here to beg for your forgiveness."
Ren Yu pressed a hand to her forehead and sighed. "Begging me is useless. It doesn’t matter if you chased me to the foot of the mountain or all the way to the top; my words mean nothing to Brother Jian. Didn’t you see this morning? He even looked like he wanted to hit me..."
Zhao Hu, who had been silent, suddenly perked up at this and muttered, "That was obviously just a lovers’ spat! Who else were we supposed to find if not you?"
"HEY!"
Ren Yu ground her teeth in frustration. She had explained this countless times on their way here, but the two thugs simply wouldn’t believe her. And now, Ren Jiacheng, having overheard their exchange, was looking at her with a gossipy glint in his eyes, as if he believed it too.
She was just a sophomore in college, still an innocent young woman, but today the village rumors had her pregnant. If a crack were to open in the ground, she would have gladly crawled into it, especially now that she saw Wang Jian’s figure standing in the doorway.
"Xiao Jian."
Ren Jiacheng spotted Wang Jian and called out with a wide smile, his eyes holding the kind of look a man might give his future son-in-law. It was a stark contrast to Ren Yu’s mortified state.
"Doctor Wang!"
Li Long and Zhao Hu whipped their heads around. Their mournful faces instantly brightened, and after shouting his name, they began kowtowing on the spot. They repeated their pleas for mercy, using the same words they had used to apologize to Ren Yu.
Wang Jian had already heard it all. The moment he realized the situation was completely different from what he’d imagined, his hatred and disgust for the two men felt completely misplaced, fizzling out like a punch thrown into cotton. Seeing them still kneeling and kowtowing, he quickly moved to help them up.
"Alright, stop kneeling. I understand what happened now. I admit I misunderstood you earlier. When the police arrive, just explain everything clearly, and it shouldn’t be a problem for you. As for treatment, once the free clinic is over, bring your medical insurance and come see me..." Wang Jian paused, his eyes falling on their tattoos. He added, "You can come even without insurance. And stop trying to use other people’s insurance or patient slots. If you had actually found a doctor to prescribe you medication this afternoon, you might not have even known what killed you."
Seeing their confused expressions, Wang Jian explained, "Every medicine carries a degree of toxicity. Your condition isn’t minor and requires strong drugs in large doses. One mistake, and a fatal outcome isn’t impossible."
Li Long and Zhao Hu exchanged a look, stunned speechless for a long moment. They felt as if they had just been snatched back from the jaws of death.
Li Long, however, quickly recovered and asked, "Doctor Wang, I trust your Medical Skills. I know if you prescribe something, it won’t kill me. But can I ask... what’s this about a misunderstanding and the police?"
Li Long and Zhao Hu were former thugs—a fact that couldn’t be denied—so the word "police" made them instinctively uneasy.
An embarrassed expression crossed Wang Jian’s face. He recounted how he’d been eating, assumed Ren Yu had been kidnapped, and rushed out in a panic. When he finished, he handed her the broken phone.
Seeing how worried Wang Jian had been for her, so much so that he’d abandoned his meal to search the entire village, Ren Yu couldn’t suppress a joyful smile. Taking the phone, she explained, "I only realized my phone was missing after I got home. I used my dad’s phone to call it several times. If you had just answered, you wouldn’t have needed to run all the way here to find out."
Her explanation, far from helping, only made Wang Jian more embarrassed.
To make matters worse, the moment Ren Yu finished speaking, Li Dayu arrived at the Ren household with a group of people in tow, including several police officers.
Though startled by the scene before him, Li Dayu didn’t hesitate. He pointed a finger at the two men and shouted, "Hey, police, it’s them! Those two! Arrest them! They’re the kidnappers!"
