Chapter 26: 26 Duocun Free Clinic 1

"Comfortable?" Xu Qian’s voice was very close, right beside his ear.

Wang Jian swallowed. With gentle whispers in his ear, his feet soaking in hot water, and someone massaging the aching spots on his shoulders and waist, this was truly one of life’s great pleasures.

"HSSS..."

"Amazing!"

Impressed by her technique, Wang Jian asked, "Did you learn massage therapy, Sister-in-law?"

Xu Qian laughed. "I used to massage my parents when I was little, and they personally taught me a few things."

Hearing this, Wang Jian was astounded. This is incredible. My brother is so lucky.

But what Wang Jian didn’t know was that even his own brother had never enjoyed such a treat.

That night, Wang Jian slept soundly, waking up especially early the next day.

The free clinic was scheduled to start at nine o’clock, so Wang Jian had to arrive at the village committee at least an hour early to help the team from the Cai Group set up the waiting area at the village entrance. The service personnel from the Cai Group were extremely reliable. They had even prepared informational booklets for the clinic, filled with practical medical knowledge that wasn’t limited to just Chinese medicine.

At least a hundred chairs, all transported by the Cai Group, were set up on site. They had even erected awnings that covered the entire village committee courtyard and stretched out onto the road at the entrance.

Wang Jian was amazed by the Cai Group’s arrangements. It was far more professional than the free clinics he had attended with his master.

He wasn’t the only one. Even the people who came to help were nearly intimidated by the scale of it all.

Given the spectacle, most of the villagers came out to watch. Those who didn’t get a close spot gathered at their neighbors’ doorsteps, watching from a distance while chattering and pointing.

Wang Jian had already settled into the consultation room early, waiting for the time to approach. Outside, Li Dayu, Uncle Zhang, and his sister-in-law were there to help, but they mostly just watched, as the Cai Group’s staff were far more professional.

Li Dayu couldn’t stop marveling at the scene. Eventually, he just pulled out a few chairs and sat down with Zhang Quan to take it all in.

"Lao Zhang, the Cai Group really takes good care of Xiao Jian. How many teams have they sent already? The awnings were up in ten minutes, and these booklets they printed even have Xiao Jian’s picture on them."

Li Dayu clucked his tongue in wonder, baffled as to why the Cai Group, with its multitude of doctors, had taken such a special interest in a young physician like Wang Jian. He’d never seen them organize a free clinic specifically for someone before.

Zhang Quan nodded, his eyes fixed on the Cai Group employees continuously organizing the site. "I thought this was just going to be a small affair, but I didn’t expect it to be so official," he added. "I wonder if Xiao Jian is nervous. He never experienced anything like this when he was studying, did he?"

As Zhang Quan speculated, Xu Qian stood by, not daring to speak. She had asked Wang Jian last night, and he hadn’t shown a single sign of nervousness. She didn’t know why, but she always found herself convinced by his words.

Li Dayu laughed. "Isn’t that the truth? For him to organize a free clinic like this right after graduating... if it weren’t for the Cai Group’s help, I bet it would’ve been a struggle. But why haven’t the doctors from the Cai Group arrived yet? There are so many people. How can Xiao Jian handle it all by himself?"

Xu Qian was taken aback. "What doctors from the Cai Group?" she asked.

"The ones the Cai Group assigned to help Xiao Jian," Li Dayu said, turning to her with a puzzled look. "You don’t know?"

"Ah..." Xu Qian hesitated, unsure if she should say anything. She had asked Wang Jian about it the previous night, and he had told her he would be handling it all himself. She was worried too, so she didn’t know how to answer Li Dayu. Her expression, however, spoke volumes. Li Dayu’s heart skipped a beat. "Don’t tell me... they didn’t invite any other doctors to help?"

No one answered him. Li Dayu began to grow restless, worrying about what would happen if something went wrong.

He had been lounging with his legs crossed but now sat up straight, hugging one leg with both hands. His eyes darted around nervously. "Everything seems set up," he said suddenly. "And it looks like people are starting to arrive. Is that Grandpa Wang and his grandson from the next village asking questions at the entrance?"

Li Dayu nudged Zhang Quan, pointing toward the village entrance. Zhang Quan stood up, squinted, and nodded. "Looks like it. They’re here early."

"What time is it?"

Xu Qian checked her phone. "It’s eight-forty. It’s about to start."

"Right, right. Twenty minutes will fly by. I’ll go to the front and greet people. You all stay here."

Li Dayu couldn’t sit still any longer. Even if Wang Jian was headed for disaster, as the village chief, he had to put on a good show. He saw this as a prime opportunity to be seen, and as the chief of Paigou Village, it wouldn’t look right if he wasn’t at the forefront. He needed to project a hands-on image. After saying his piece, he hitched up his trousers and waddled toward the village committee entrance.

Whether they were from the next village or one several miles away, whether he knew them or not, he struck up a conversation with everyone, keeping himself busy. He even helped out the Cai Group’s young nurses when they couldn’t understand the local dialect.

As nine o’clock approached, Li Dayu, having made his rounds, finally had a moment to look farther out. He was shocked to see that people from the town had come as well. That made no sense.

Li Dayu was unaware that when he was promoting the event in the other villages, his mention of "doctors from the Cai Group" had spread like wildfire. While not everyone knew, those with relatives among the village chiefs had certainly heard the news.

At first, people were skeptical. The Cai Group was a massive enterprise with exclusive private hospitals; seeing them hold a free clinic was major news. Previous free clinics were always so packed you couldn’t get in. Now, word was that Cai Group doctors were holding one in a small village—who wouldn’t want to check that out?

Even if it was a fake, it cost nothing to go see a free clinic.

But upon arriving, they were greeted by Cai Group nurses, given informational pamphlets, and even told they could receive gift bags with Cai Group sanitizing products after their consultation. This whole operation screamed legitimacy. There was nothing more to be said, so everyone dutifully got in line.

As the clock struck nine, a stir went through the front of the line.

Wang Jian finally received his first patient, who was escorted in by a nurse. Before the man even arrived, his information popped up on Wang Jian’s computer. Thanks to the national healthcare information network, Wang Jian could even access the patient’s past medical records through the Cai Group’s system, which was a huge help for his diagnosis.

The diagnostic methods of observation, listening, inquiry, and pulse-taking involved more than just the present condition. A patient’s medical history could significantly influence the final judgment.

Wang Jian motioned for the patient to sit down and rest his arm on the small cushion. He began asking some simple questions, his right hand already resting on the patient’s pulse.

"What seems to be the problem?"

"Well, Doctor, I’ve been having insomnia lately, just can’t fall asleep at night..."

The patient went on at length, but Wang Jian felt a steady, strong pulse with no signs of illness. To be certain, he used the friendly chat as an opportunity to examine the patient’s tongue coating. Afterwards, he prescribed a very simple, low-dose sedative, mainly to set the patient’s mind at ease.

The entire consultation was over in just five minutes.

Before the man left, Wang Jian added, "You should spend less time on your phone."

The old man’s face immediately flushed red. Scrolling through TikTok was indeed a habit of his. He had just stood up and was instinctively reaching for his phone when Wang Jian called him out. This doctor is really something else, he thought, impressed by his sharpness.

The man thanked Wang Jian several times and walked out.

The moment he was outside, he was swarmed by people asking how it went. The old man launched into a stream of extravagant praise, mostly to avoid admitting he’d been chided for his phone use, and walked off under the watchful eyes of the crowd.

The second patient’s issue was also minor—just a toothache. He was unwilling to spend money on dental work, so it flared up whenever he had excess internal heat.

The next several patients were much the same.

Wang Jian remained calm and unflappable, treating whatever ailments came his way. As a doctor, he hoped his patients only had minor issues, or ideally, none at all.

Unbeknownst to him, the nurses were livestreaming everything inside to Cai Xing and his team.

Cai Xing, Cai Wenji, and two Chinese medicine experts were on their way, but thanks to the livestream, they were fully aware of every development.

"Doctor Deng, Doctor Niu, that’s several patients now, all with minor complaints that don’t really need a doctor. Do you think Wang Jian might get impatient?" Cai Wenji asked with a smile after summarizing the situation. "He’s so young, I’m afraid he might not have the patience."

Cai Wenji had already briefed Niu Deyuan and Deng Xianhua on Wang Jian. Both were renowned Chinese medicine experts in the province with their own free clinic experience. Hearing the question, they exchanged a look and laughed.

Niu Deyuan chuckled. "When I first joined a free clinic, I was eager to show off my skills and make a name for myself. At Wang Jian’s age, if I’d been in this situation, it would have been strange if I *hadn’t* gotten impatient."

Deng Xianhua nodded with a knowing smile, clearly in agreement.

Cai Xing, however, chimed in with a laugh. "I don’t think Wang Jian will get impatient at all. That kid is very different... Anyway, we’re almost there. We’ll see for ourselves when we arrive."
