Chapter 223: In front of the widow’s house, there is much gossip and trouble.

"Mrs. Niu, please have some self-respect."

Wang Jian pulled his arm free from Yang Rong’s grasp and took two steps back, his expression serious as he spoke his mind. "I have something to attend to at home. I don’t have time to go..."

To your house? How could I... I’m in a hurry to get back to Xu Qian.

Wang Jian glanced at his splashed clothes, his brow furrowing uncontrollably. A splash of cool water was indeed refreshing this time of year, but this particular water smelled of laundry detergent. Who knew what it had been used for.

Before he could finish, Yang Rong cut him off, pressing closer once again. She wore nothing underneath her T-shirt, which was now soaked from the neckline down. She paid her drenched top no mind, letting her two massive mounds, tipped with purple grapes, swing brazenly in the air. Judging by her demeanor, she was more than happy to let Wang Jian take in the view.

Yang Rong slowly backed Wang Jian against the wall. "Look at you, you’re soaked," she said. "The weather’s starting to turn cool. You’ll catch a cold if you go home like this. Come inside with me..."

With that, she made a move to pull him into her yard.

She seemed to have forgotten one crucial detail: Wang Jian’s house was right next door. Even if it were the dead of winter, he would have no trouble getting home. The excuse she used was so flimsy that Wang Jian could hardly bear to look at her.

"Are you really concerned about me catching a cold?"

Shameless wench!

She was clearly just after his body. Wang Jian couldn’t be bothered to call her out, nor did he want to get any more entangled with her. He sidestepped Yang Rong’s blockade and walked straight toward his house.

Yang Rong ran her tongue over her lips, but this time, she didn’t try to stop him. However...

At first, it was Wang Jian’s skills and connections that had captivated her. Now, after seeing his physique, she genuinely craved his body. Even through his T-shirt, she could make out his impressive build. Not to mention, she had taken the opportunity to feel him up when she had pressed against him earlier. Wang Jian’s body was solid, and those abs were the real deal.

She could never have imagined that a university student, a medical student no less, would have such a fantastic body. Yang Rong had never had the chance to witness such a sight before.

No rush, no rush. You’ll be mine sooner or later. You can’t escape. Hahahaha.

Only after seeing Wang Jian enter his own yard did Yang Rong retreat, a crooked smile on her face. Before she went inside, however, she heard some of the neighborhood busybodies nearby casting aspersions, calling her shameless, a hussy, and other such names.

Yang Rong shot them a glare from a distance but returned to her home without a word. If she were afraid of such talk, she wouldn’t have survived this long.

"Oh my, what on earth happened to you?" Xu Qian was preparing ingredients for dinner, bustling between the yard and the house, when she saw Wang Jian walk in. "Did you fall into a river?"

Xu Qian hadn’t heard the commotion next door. She was too busy with dinner preparations to join the others in gawking at the spectacle. Even if she had heard the disturbance, she wouldn’t have bothered with it. Over the years, she had seen and heard more than her fair share of drama from next door and had long grown accustomed to the scandals. The saying that a widow’s doorstep is fraught with disputes was not without reason.

Seeing Wang Jian completely soaked, Xu Qian put down what she was doing and brought him a towel. "Weren’t you at the clinic?" she asked as she began to dry his hair. "How did you get like this?"

Wang Jian sighed helplessly. "Don’t even ask. I ran into a crazy woman."

Xu Qian pursed her lips into a smile and didn’t press him further. Instead, she handed him the towel. "You dry yourself. I have to cook. I don’t have time to help you..."

"Right. You go on, I can manage."

Faced with such a gentle sister-in-law, Wang Jian’s plan was thrown into complete disarray. He had originally planned to come in and ask her directly...

Now, he could only clutch the towel and dry his hair, unsure how to begin. His mind raced, searching for an opening, for the right topic.

"By the way, Sister-in-law..." Wang Jian finished drying his hair and set the towel aside before speaking again. "Do you remember what happened after I fell asleep last night?"

He noticed Xu Qian’s movements instantly stiffen. Sensing an opportunity, he fanned the flames. "I’ve been racking my brain all day, but I can’t recall a thing. I must have drunk too much and blacked out."

"Can you help me remember?" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Remember? How am I supposed to help him remember...?

With her back to Wang Jian, Xu Qian’s face twisted into a bitter smile. There was truly no way to recount it. By the time she had sobered up last night, it was too late. It had already happened, and she too had been lost in the moment. She only managed to catch her breath after secretly slipping out of the room later. This morning, she had gone to great lengths to act as if nothing had happened, taking care of Wang Jian as usual, hoping to simply let yesterday pass.

But now, Wang Jian’s question brought the absurd events of last night flooding back. Even just thinking about it made her legs feel weak.

She opened her mouth, then stammered, "Uh... well... I drank quite a bit yesterday, too... My memory is a bit hazy. Why don’t you ask someone else? Why are you asking me?"

Wang Jian watched her back, listening to her words and sensing the panic and anxiety in her tone.

"It’s just that Chairman Kang is a lightweight. He was the first to pass out. Besides him, there was no one else there," Wang Jian said as he started walking toward her, wanting to see her expression to get a clearer picture. "Later, I asked Li Liping, and that’s how I found out a few things about yesterday."

"Li Liping?" Xu Qian’s knife slammed down on the chopping board with a sharp crack.

Wang Jian nodded. He was now at her side, watching her panic with a secret smile. "Yes, her. She’s the one who approached me. If she hadn’t told me about what happened, I would have almost completely forgotten..."

The more Wang Jian spoke, the more flushed and vexed Xu Qian became, silently cursing Li Liping as a traitor. Last night, while Wang Jian was dead to the world, she and Li Liping had made a pact that the matter would never be mentioned again.

Xu Qian hadn’t given it much thought at the time. After all, the woman was moving to Demon City the very next day. With her being so far away, she wouldn’t run into Wang Jian, making the chances of the secret getting out extremely low.

She never would have imagined that the woman would sell her out in less than a day.

She didn’t know how much Li Liping had revealed or if she herself had been implicated. More than the shame of them both being exposed, Xu Qian hoped Li Liping had only talked about her own actions. She prayed she hadn’t been dragged into it...

With this sliver of hope, she looked at Wang Jian, weighing her options. But his amused expression immediately set her heart racing with alarm.

Xu Qian’s entire face turned crimson, a blush that spread all the way to the tips of her ears.

It’s over, it’s over. He definitely knows.

That damn backstabber Li Liping! I never should have trusted her.

Xu Qian bit her lip, unable to meet Wang Jian’s gaze as a wave of guilt and shame washed over her.

"You... you... what are you doing? I need to cook."

Seeing this, Wang Jian said nothing. He just smiled as he watched her, inching closer and closer. He watched as Xu Qian’s composure crumbled, until she finally pleaded as if begging for mercy, "Alright, alright, stop coming closer! I’ll tell you whatever you want to know."

Hearing this, Wang Jian finally stopped his advance, and Xu Qian let out a sigh of relief. For some reason, however, she now seemed even more unable to meet his gaze. She kept her head turned, her eyes darting away. She began to stammer, growing flustered and bashful.
