Chapter 17: 17 Li Liping’s True Thoughts

"What are you doing?"

Wang Jian was flustered. He quickly glanced toward the kitchen, letting out a sigh of relief only when he saw no one was there. In a low voice, he hissed at Li Liping, "Aren’t you afraid of being discovered?"

"So what?" Li Liping stood up from the sofa and pressed herself close to him. "Don’t you like it?"

"Or... are you scared?"

"Of cou—" The words "of course I’m scared" were on the tip of Wang Jian’s tongue, but the teasing look in Li Liping’s eyes made his masculine pride force them back down. "Am I supposed to pretend my sister-in-law doesn’t exist?" he finally asked.

"Pfft, what’s your sister-in-law got to do with you? It’s not like she can control you. I’m not afraid..."

Li Liping had just finished speaking when Xu Qian really did peek her head out from the kitchen and call out, "You’ll have to wait for me a bit. Brewing the tea will take a few minutes."

The interruption startled both Li Liping and Wang Jian, and they only breathed a sigh of relief after Xu Qian had retreated into the kitchen.

Li Liping’s face flushed red from the scare. Seeing this, Wang Jian laughed. "Look at you. Now you know what it feels like to be scared, huh? And yet you still secretly took that off right in front of us. I have no idea how you managed it."

"Who said I took it off just now?" Li Liping scoffed. "I wasn’t wearing it in the first place. I was holding it from the start and just sat on it."

HISS...

Wang Jian glanced at her skirt. Sure enough, the fabric lay perfectly smooth without any telltale lines. She really wasn’t wearing anything underneath.

Wang Jian mumbled, "I never would have guessed you were this kind of woman."

"What kind of woman..." Li Liping repeated, her expression turning cold. "The kind you all forced me to become."

There was an anger in her eyes she could barely hide, but it was overshadowed by a deep unwillingness that finally dissolved into a sigh.

"You said we forced you?" Wang Jian was stunned. "Which ’we’?"

"If you were a woman," Li Liping said, giving him a disdainful look, "and your own husband and father-in-law urged you to sleep with another man, using your inability to have children to pressure you into having an affair just to produce an heir, you’d be like this too!

"I’ve never encountered anything like this in my life, and I certainly never thought it would happen to me.

"Hah. Rather than be forced, I’d rather take the initiative and enjoy it.

"You men are all the same kind of demon—lecherous demons."

Li Liping grew more agitated as she spoke, finally finding an outlet for her pent-up emotions.

"You’re not bad-looking, and you’re a doctor, so letting you have your way with me isn’t so bad. I’m just a weak woman who can’t fight back. Shouldn’t you be happy that I’m taking the initiative? Besides..." Li Liping pressed against Wang Jian, wrapping an arm around him. Her hand began to wander as she whispered in his ear, "You seem to be enjoying it quite a bit. Look, you’re already reacting."

"Nonsense!"

"I never had any intention of touching you," Wang Jian forced himself to explain. "I studied medicine. I’m certain I can cure Zhang Li, so don’t worry. I won’t force you..."

Damn it! This woman’s ideas were outrageous, but it was so thrilling! Heaven help me... Heaven help me...

Wang Jian quickly pushed Li Liping away and sat down on the sofa, pulling a throw pillow onto his lap to hide his embarrassment.

"You idiot!"

Li Liping burst out laughing. As a married woman, she was afraid of nothing. Wang Jian’s reaction struck her as both naive and hilarious, so she didn’t bother to stifle her laughter.

As for Zhang Li’s condition, they had spent years visiting all sorts of places and seeing every doctor they could. The only ones they hadn’t seen were the so-called National Masters, who were either impossible to meet or financially out of their reach. The Zhang family had given up, which was what led to their current plan. Even if Wang Jian were brilliant, could he really be more capable than all those experts?

This naive side of Wang Jian was actually quite adorable. What started as an act of impulse and anger was now turning into a genuine desire to be proactive. After all, who could resist when he was this cute?

Just then, Xu Qian finally emerged from the kitchen. Hearing the noise in the living room, she cast a curious glance their way.

"What are you laughing about? Did the special guest on the show come out?" Xu Qian asked Li Liping with a smile, carrying a teapot over. Her gaze had already shifted to the TV, where the screen showed the guest playing a game with Teacher He. It did look quite fun.

Li Liping was quick on her feet. "The game they’re playing is really funny," she laughed. "You’re just in time!"

This is why they say a woman like her is deadly.

Wang Jian’s heart pounded as he watched from the side. He had been terrified by his sister-in-law’s sudden appearance, but Li Liping was acting as if nothing had happened. He couldn’t compete.

He had lost. This woman was a natural-born actress.

The afternoon seemed to drag on forever. For Wang Jian, every minute felt like a year, caught between the two women in a state of torment and indecision.

As dusk settled and the daylight faded, the mountain lights began to twinkle. Zhang Quan and his son finally arrived, carrying several nicely wrapped gifts—practical items like drinks and healthy snacks. What was truly outrageous, however, was that among the items, Wang Jian spotted a supplement for enhancing male vitality.

When Zhang Li handed the things over, his eyes seemed to speak for him, making it perfectly clear they were for Wang Jian.

Dinner was already prepared. Taking advantage of the lingering twilight, they set up a round table in the courtyard. The five of them sat around it, eating, drinking, and chatting cheerfully, filling the Wang’s courtyard with life.

* * *

At the same time, Li Dayu had just left the village committee, hands clasped behind his back. He hummed a little tune, looking left and right like a landlord surveying his domain.

Everyone he met along the way, whether man or woman, young or old, greeted him warmly. Li Dayu was in a good mood, so he handed out candy to the children and stopped to chat with the adults. The walk home ended up taking him a full half hour.

The moment he stepped through the door, his wife Wang Cuihua’s booming voice rang out.

"Lao Li, if you walked any slower, the food would be frozen solid."

"If you didn’t come back soon, your son and I were going to eat without you."

"Hurry up! I still have to go to the next village for square dancing."

The village chief’s wife, Wang Cuihua, was said to have once been the village belle—and a tall woman at that. Now, however, she was a large woman whose snores could be heard by the neighbors and whose voice was just as loud. Still, she always put on makeup and wore attractive clothes to lead the square dancing.

"You square dance every single day. Don’t you get sick of it?"

Li Dayu hummed as he sat down. Hearing his wife Cuihua’s nagging, he glared and shot back, "I have to wait for you to eat my own meal now? Go on, get me some liquor. I’m having a couple of drinks today."

Wang Cuihua scoffed but didn’t press the issue. She simply grabbed a bottle of Maotai from a nearby cabinet and poured a small cup for Li Dayu.

Their bickering was a daily routine, but they rarely had any major conflicts.

Seeing Li Dayu so happy, however, made Wang Cuihua curious. "Did a magpie land on our roof or something? Why are you so happy today?" she asked.

"You’re not in the best of health, so drink less, you hear?"

Li Dayu nodded and took a sip of Maotai. "I know, I know. Stop nagging," he laughed.

"I don’t know about any magpies, but I met an important figure today. Maybe I’ll be able to hitch a ride on his coattails in the future, so of course I’m happy." 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

With that, Li Dayu shifted his gaze to Li Shuang, who sat opposite him. "You didn’t come home last night, and you were gone all day today. Where were you off playing this time?"

Li Shuang chuckled. "I went to town with Liu Zi."

"Stop fooling around all the time. The little money I’ve scraped together will be squandered by you soon enough. Find a woman, get married, and give our Li family an heir."

Li Shuang nodded eagerly at his father’s words. Seeing his dad in such a good mood, he recalled what happened with Wang Jian at the village committee yesterday and quickly piped up, "Dad, I’ve found a lucrative opportunity, and I might need your help."

Rarely so happy, and seeing his son being so agreeable, Li Dayu waved his hand magnanimously, as if he would agree to anything. "Speak."

"Hehe, you know that recreation room at our village committee, right?"

The moment Li Shuang said this, Li Dayu froze. Since when did their village committee have a recreation room?

Looking at Li Shuang’s expression, however, he instantly recalled that Li Shuang and Liu Zi often went to that empty building to play cards. He knew exactly which place his son was talking about.

"What about it? Why are you asking?"

Li Shuang poured his father another cup, earning him a glare from his mother, but because they were talking business, Wang Cuihua held her tongue.

"It’s nothing, Dad. That building has always been empty, right? It’s not being used for anything. I was thinking of putting it to use, maybe start a small business to earn some money."

Li Shuang had it all figured out. Since Wang Jian wanted the house, he would make the first move and get control of it. Then he could use it as leverage to demand a cut of the profits from Wang Jian. It was a perfect plan.

Li Dayu was stunned. The thought that Li Shuang wanted to do business was a momentary shock. It was as if the wolf cub he’d painstakingly raised from infancy had finally learned how to hunt. Feeling both proud and troubled, Li Dayu looked conflicted. "Silly boy, you’re a little too late!"

"Huh? What do you mean?"
