Chapter 121: 116 Ren Yu’s troubles

Wang Jian’s first reaction was annoyance. Why did this girl have to come over and hide from trouble, interrupting his private time with Xu Qian? But he calmed down almost immediately. Ren Yu was no stranger to him.

So, Wang Jian nodded and said, "Sure, that’s fine. That guy from Capital City must be here for Xiao Yu, right?"

Ever since they were young, whenever Xiao Yu felt hurt at home, she would run to his place to hide and seek comfort. Her pitiful expression was still vivid in his mind. In the past, he would have taken her to catch fish in the ditch or played card games with her, like a big brother taking his little sister out to play. In his heart, Ren Yu was practically his sister.

Now, a man had come all the way from Capital City to find her, and the implication was obvious.

Seeing Xu Qian nod as well, Wang Jian knew she was thinking the same thing.

He heard Xu Qian say, "I haven’t had a chance to ask her yet, but... you’re probably right." She laughed as she spoke, as if imagining a scene from a romantic TV drama. "If you ask me, Xiao Yu is just being shy. Someone came all the way from Capital City for her. How romantic."

Wang Jian scoffed. Xu Qian slapped him. "What was that for? What are you laughing at?"

Wang Jian quickly grabbed her hand, afraid she might hit a sore spot. "No, no. I just don’t think Xiao Yu is shy at all. She probably dislikes this classmate and is just annoyed with her family. She’s hiding because she doesn’t want to cause a scene."

"You’re that certain?"

"Of course. That girl has followed me around since we were little," Wang Jian laughed. "I know her so well that when she twitches, I know what kind of trouble she’s about to get into."

"Ew..." Xu Qian murmured, clearly disgusted. Wang Jian had made such a nice topic sound so crude, especially since he had slapped her on the behind as he spoke. It was both painful and embarrassing, so Xu Qian slapped him right back. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Wang Jian immediately dodged, arching his back and covering his vitals with his hands.

"Get up, get up!"

"Stop fooling around!"

"If we keep this up, Xiao Yu will be here any minute."

At that, Xu Qian stopped their playful fight and urged Wang Jian to hurry and get out of bed.

In just a few days, the wound on Wang Jian’s shoulder had already scabbed over. He was healing remarkably quickly; anyone else would have taken much longer. Xu Qian marveled at this, but when she considered Wang Jian’s stamina and physical condition, it all seemed reasonable.

The two of them tidied up the bed. The sheets had gotten soaked the night before, so Xu Qian took them out to clean. Their little life together continued quite naturally.

When Ren Yu arrived, she didn’t notice anything unusual at the Wang family’s house.

But her expression was just as Wang Jian had anticipated: gloomy, with her brows slightly furrowed. Even when she smiled in greeting, the displeasure in her features didn’t fade.

"You’re here?" Wang Jian was sitting on a small stool in the courtyard, playing on his phone. He had a clear view of Ren Yu as she arrived.

"Mhm," Ren Yu responded. Her gaze lingered on Wang Jian for a moment before shifting away, her eyes somewhat dim. Her right hand was clenched into a fist, her thumb pinching the knuckle of her index finger. "Is your wound better?" she asked, as if it were a casual thought.

Seeing her glance at his injury, Wang Jian smiled. "Much better. It’s already scabbed over."

Only then did Ren Yu nod. She glanced inside the house. "Is Sister Qian inside cleaning up?"

"Oh... yes..."

He had, of course, noticed her odd behavior. When he told Xu Qian that morning that he understood Ren Yu, he wasn’t just bragging. He had thought she would have grown out of that little habit of pinching her knuckles after so many years, but she was still doing it. He pretended not to notice her strained facade and continued, "I was starting to think you didn’t want to see me anymore now that you’re grown up. Every time you come over, all I hear is ’Sister Qian, Sister Qian.’"

Wang Jian feigned distress. "Sigh... How times have changed!"

His act successfully caught Ren Yu’s attention. "That’s not it. I just had something I needed to ask Sister Qian."

Seeing that she’d taken the bait, Wang Jian asked, "Is it about that male classmate?"

Ren Yu nodded, then shook her head. "Not a classmate, a senior."

Hearing the word "senior," Wang Jian understood immediately. In college, it was common for older male students to pursue younger female students, but very few would chase a girl all the way to her hometown.

For some reason, Wang Jian felt an urgent, protective feeling, as if one of his own was being preyed upon, and he subconsciously started to analyze the situation. On one hand, if the feelings were mutual, it could be seen as romantic persistence, a beautiful love story. On the other hand, if the girl wasn’t interested, a man forcefully showing up at her home had nothing to do with romance. It was just creepy, self-righteous emotional blackmail.

Wang Jian saw the discomfort in Ren Yu’s eyes. He knew that with her personality, it was difficult for her to reject someone outright. Even if a person offended her, she might not actually say anything. This was why she had always run to his house to find him when they were kids. Wang Jian also realized something else—this senior was definitely the presumptuous type.

With that established, Wang Jian’s mind began to churn. He grabbed a small stool from nearby, placed it next to himself, and patted it. "Come. Sit and talk. Sister Qian is tidying up inside and probably doesn’t have time to chat right now. Talking to me is just as good."

Ren Yu glanced at Wang Jian and obediently sat down. She was dressed casually, with a simple ponytail, a plain white printed T-shirt, and jeans, clearly having put little thought into her attire. She sat on the small stool and drew her knees to her chest. Paired with her unhappy expression, she looked the very picture of pitifulness.

After she settled, Wang Jian asked, feigning ignorance, "This senior is pursuing you, right? What year is he?"

"Huh? A third-year..." Ren Yu, having just sat down, was stunned. She never expected Wang Jian to be so direct. She grew flustered and looked at him, wanting to explain but not knowing where to start. "He and I have nothing to do with each other," she said urgently. "He’s the one who keeps looking for me. I haven’t..."

"Hahaha, why are you so nervous? I didn’t ask what your relationship was."

Seeing that Ren Yu was pinching her fingers so hard they might bleed, Wang Jian quickly cut off her spiraling thoughts. He reached out, placed his hand on her head, and gave her hair a firm, playful ruffle. Her reaction confirmed his suspicions. Combining that with his understanding of her personality, he had a good grasp of the situation.

"Silly girl," Wang Jian said, his hand still on her head. "You’ve always been like this. You don’t know how to be firm with people. Even when you reject someone, you’re always worried about their feelings, afraid you’ll hurt them. That..."

He had been about to say that she’d get bullied acting like that, but the words died on his lips. After all, being considerate was a virtue. Ren Yu wasn’t the one at fault, and he didn’t want to discourage her kindness.

Wang Jian changed his tone. "It’s a good quality, but you have to be careful. When you run into shameless people, they’ll use it to take advantage of you. Give them an inch, and they’ll take a mile. You can’t associate with people like that."

"Even if you don’t feel it in your heart, you have to at least pretend to be firm."

This was definitely the first time Wang Jian had ever spoken to Ren Yu like this.

As he talked, his hand never left her head. It had to be said, her hair felt really nice.

Beside him, Ren Yu blinked her big eyes, enjoying the warmth from his large hand and listening to his words of wisdom. Her heart inexplicably calmed down.

She lowered her head, a faint smile touching her lips.

Brother Wang Jian is still the same as when we were kids. I knew it wasn’t a mistake to come to him. Yes, asking for Sister Qian was just an excuse. I was just too shy. The more I cared for Wang Jian, the less I wanted to bother him, especially when he was still recovering from his injury. Besides... how could I talk about this kind of girly stuff directly with him?

But Ren Yu’s smile didn’t last long, because Wang Jian’s next words almost made her get up and storm off in anger.
