Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 107 - 102 Hot Soy Milk
Zhao Zhe recalled an emergency once. His hospital had received a call, and he happened to be dispatched. When he arrived at the scene, he found a man who kept complaining of a stomachache. He couldn’t defecate but constantly felt the urge to go. The pain had become excruciating, to the point where it felt like something was trying to claw its way out of his anus. The patient was terrified, even naively thinking he was about to give birth.
When Zhao Zhe arrived, he pulled a three-meter-long tapeworm straight out of the man’s rear. The scene was unforgettable, and Zhao Zhe still remembered it vividly.
However, compared to that incident, this was the first time Zhao Zhe had ever seen this kind of parasite preserved in a bottle. Wang Jian claimed it was Gu Poison, but Zhao Zhe didn’t pay it much mind. As someone trained in Western Medicine, he didn’t believe in such things, and Wang Jian didn’t press the issue. The two of them focused their conversation on the term "parasite."
Zhao Zhe largely agreed with Wang Jian’s proposed treatment method. But when he turned around, he saw Zhao Chunyang on the stretcher, his stomach covered in bloody holes.
"What’s this?"
Zhao Zhe was stunned. Could the worms have burrowed out on their own?
Before Wang Jian could explain, Zhao Guozhi, the patient’s relative, stepped forward and vividly recounted the events of the last three minutes. When Zhao Zhe heard about extracting worms from under the skin with a silver needle, his eyes widened. His gaze flickered between Wang Jian and Zhao Chunming’s stomach.
"Impressive skills!"
Zhao Zhe gave an unreserved thumbs-up. He had never seen or even heard of such a technique in his entire medical career. He even regretted not arriving sooner to witness it himself. He had no reason to doubt Zhao Guozhi’s words; he saw the silver needle, the bloody holes, and the parasite still squirming vigorously in the bottle. Facts spoke louder than words.
"I’ll do as you suggested and give him a comprehensive examination first. It would be best if we can locate the eggs."
"Why don’t you come along with us?" Zhao Zhe added, speaking his mind. He felt that having Wang Jian around would make dealing with this parasite easier. He might not have believed in Gu Worms, but he had never seen a parasite like this before, and Zhao Chunming’s symptoms were also different from any typical parasitic infection. For the best possible outcome, he made the conservative choice to bring Wang Jian back with him.
Wang Jian gave a wry smile and pointed to his shoulder. "I’m afraid I wouldn’t be much help. My arm is injured."
"Injured?"
Zhao Zhe was taken aback. He looked at Wang Jian’s left shoulder and the bloodstain he’d noticed upon entering. He had assumed it was the patient’s blood, never imagining it was Wang Jian’s own injury.
Wang Jian nodded and explained, "Yeah, ran into a bandit yesterday. Took a bullet."
Good grief, how do you manage to run into everything, good and bad? Zhao Zhe was stunned. A civilian with a gunshot wound was a rarity these days. The comment, however, reminded him of a critical patient brought to the hospital the previous day. "I heard two vicious poachers were apprehended. That wouldn’t have been your doing, would it?"
Seeing Wang Jian nod, Zhao Zhe’s mouth twitched. With his gossipy nature, there was no way Zhao Zhe wouldn’t know the full story of Shou Hou and Lao Zhou. That’s why he stared at Wang Jian with such an incredulous expression. As far as he knew, an ordinary person had taken down those two bandits, leaving one dead and the other disabled. The police had nothing to do with it.
Now, knowing that person was Wang Jian, Zhao Zhe felt a little stupefied.
We’re all doctors, but some of us are clearly built different.
"Let’s go," Zhao Zhe finally said, grabbing Wang Jian’s arm. "When we get to the hospital, you can get that wound re-dressed. It’s already starting to open up."
"Go, go, go."
He didn’t wait for Wang Jian to refuse, simply pulling him along into the ambulance.
Just before they left, Wang Jian stuck his head out and shouted to a hesitant Li Shuang, "Li Shuang, drive over to the City Hospital later! I’ll call Cai Qiong, and we can all discuss your situation then."
Hearing this, Li Shuang was overjoyed and watched the ambulance drive away. Mrs. Zhao and Zhao Guozhi were also in the ambulance, leaving only Li Shuang and his father at the Zhao family’s gate.
"Xiao Shuang," Li Dayu began, his voice thick with emotion. "I really misjudged him."
"Misjudged what?" Li Shuang asked, a smile still on his face. He glanced sideways at his father, who was staring after the ambulance, and immediately understood. "Are you talking about Xiao Jian?"
"That’s right," Li Dayu nodded. "I thought he came back just to open a small clinic and coast through life. I mean, who goes through all that education just to come back and work in a village, you know?"
Li Shuang nodded. The whole point of getting a good education was to get out.
"But I was so wrong," Li Dayu sighed. "That Xiao Jian... he’s the real deal!" He gave a big thumbs-up. "His Medical Skills are top-notch, and so is his character."
"Incredible," Li Dayu couldn’t stop himself. What he had witnessed today had completely changed his perspective. "If he had been here during the Gu Poison disaster when I was a child, so many people wouldn’t have died."
As he spoke, Li Dayu’s gaze fell on Li Shuang. Years of frustration with his son’s lack of ambition welled up. "You, on the other hand... you should learn from him! Get your act together and stop messing around. Just look at Wang Jian, then look at yourself."
The sudden criticism left Li Shuang stunned into a bitter smile. It’s not like you can even compare us.
However, the idea of "not messing around anymore" did spark a few thoughts in his mind.
Fortunately, Li Dayu didn’t linger on the topic. After his brief critique, he returned to the matter at hand. "Let’s go. Head to the hospital. Since Xiao Jian said that, your problem should be as good as solved."
Li Shuang nodded. The two of them got into their Cadillac. Li Dayu had already thrown away the black bag that held the worms. "Cai Qiong is the Cai Family’s daughter, right?"
"Yes," Li Dayu confirmed. "When we get to the City Hospital and explain things, it will definitely be resolved. Unless that Gao Yang has lost his mind..."
「」
After getting into the ambulance, Wang Jian’s first order of business was to call Cai Qiong and wake her up.
When Cai Qiong heard that Wang Jian wasn’t at home and was already on his way to the City Hospital, she nearly sprang out of bed. She was supposed to be observing Wang Jian’s psychology and behavior, and now she was the one lagging behind. The phone call jolted her fully awake. She quickly washed up, said a brief goodbye to Xu Qian, who was also just waking up, and rushed out the door.
Xu Qian, too, had been woken by Wang Jian’s call. Her face was a little flushed, and her complexion was excellent. Cai Qiong was in too much of a hurry to notice the change in her; otherwise, she might have recalled the events of the previous night.
By the time Cai Qiong retrieved her car from the village entrance and reached the City Hospital, Wang Jian and Li Shuang were already eating breakfast.
"You’re here?" Wang Jian said. "You haven’t eaten yet, have you? I’ve got deep-fried dough sticks and pork buns. Here." He pointed to a full serving he had saved specifically for her.
"The soy milk and buns aren’t hot anymore, but they’re still warm, so don’t mind it."
"Oh, this soy milk is warm too." Cai Qiong took the bag, feeling the lingering warmth of the buns through the plastic. Though she didn’t normally eat them, she didn’t refuse this time.
Wang Jian smiled. "There were two cold ones, but Li Shuang and I already drank them. Now there’s only one warm one left. Do you want it or not?"
"Of course I do. Why wouldn’t I?" Cai Qiong had rushed out and was already starving. She took a bite of a pork bun and paused, surprised. It was actually quite delicious. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
"Huh? Where are these buns from?"
"Tastes good, right?" Wang Jian laughed. "Li Shuang recommended the place."
"By the way, let me introduce you," Wang Jian said, gesturing to the man beside him. "This is Li Shuang. We grew up together in the same village. He’s the young master from our village chief’s family."
"What ’young master’?" Li Shuang flushed with embarrassment. To be called a young master in front of the Cai Family’s daughter, and just for being a village chief’s son, felt incredibly awkward.
"Hahahaha."
Wang Jian laughed. Ever since hearing why Li Shuang needed his help, he felt that his neighbor, who had been a scoundrel for as long as he could remember, had genuinely changed. Because of that, he felt comfortable joking with him. His opinion of him was definitely different now.
"Hello," Cai Qiong said, greeting him since Wang Jian had made the introduction. "Weren’t you two bringing a patient to the hospital? Why are you sitting out here?"
"We’re already done with that," Wang Jian explained. "I just came to lend a hand, but there wasn’t much for me to do. The doctors in the city are very skilled."
"It’s a good thing you’re here. There’s something else I might need your help with."
Wang Jian shifted to the side, holding a dough stick in his mouth to free up a hand. He patted the small empty space next to him. "Come on, sit here. We can talk things over."
Cai Qiong glanced at the palm-sized spot. If she sat there, half of her body would be pressed against his. She shot him a disdainful look. He definitely did that on purpose.
