Chapter 445: The Kingdom Would Have Died With Him

[KAWAI]

The chatter didn’t stop, even as they were close to the palace.

Instead, the warriors had been as lively as before; only that the ones around Danny were in some sort of shock.

Sure, they had gotten to understand the kind of love they had walked into and witnessed on the battlefield, but then, beyond the glory and affection, was the fear of loss, and Danny found himself in the middle of one such discussion.

He had left his brother and his Erasthai behind. However, the more he listened to the warriors around him, the harsher the truth hit him. The truth of what could have happened if the king hadn’t gotten there in time.

The truth of what the night would have turned to if Kosta hadn’t growled in rage and rushed to save Tamiko. The truth of what could have been them if they hadn’t all acted faster.

And Danny was scared.

He had never been scared of losing Tamiko like he had been tonight. It was not even something that he could voice, but at least there were warriors who shared his fear, even if he didn’t dare to spell it out.

"If the prince had died tonight..." a warrior said, his head in his hands like he couldn’t even get himself to complete that sentence. It was like the worst horror story that they had been forced to be a part of, even when the stakes had already been high.

It was bad enough that the battlefield had turned red because of Kosta, but then it had almost turned dark red and painted the very skies with blood if the prince had left too.

That was the most dangerous moment on the battlefield, and none of them understood even the logic of it.

Some were angry that that happened, while others understood the love that had pushed the prince and his relationship to that point; even then, love wasn’t supposed to have that much power over an individual.

Yet it was that love that had brought them their prince home. The love that Kosta and Tamiko had had walked the price through the front gates of Kawai and gave them something to look forward to.

"The kingdom would have died with him," another completed the sentence that most of the warriors didn’t dare to.

Tonight had really taken a toll on them, and they would be lying to themselves if they said that all was well.

Nothing was okay.

Nothing was well.

Life was full of shit, and they had been thrust in the middle of it all like they were not even supposed to be living there, too.

"We have to thank the king for this fast action," Danny mumbled under belief. He was starting to get angry, too.

This was not the ending he had wished for, but at the same time, he was conscious enough to understand that white came to Kosta; all logic went out the window for Tamiko.

It was like the world always paused to take a breather so they could live their lives. But that was way too expensive for everyone; it was a risk that was starting to bloom like it was never going to be worth it, and honestly, it was creepy as fuck.

It was crazy and unhinged. It was not the kind of thing that happens here in Kawai.

Hell, not even in Danny’s life. But it had, and they had to deal with it.

"We almost lost them," another wounded warrior said. His Lycan healing was slow, and he would probably end up in the infirmary, but that didn’t make it any easier for all of them now that they had won.

"Kawai would have gone dark really quick. Honestly, I don’t care what our chief is. I don’t care if he is an omega or if he is the king himself. The only thing I care about is for them to live.

"I only want them to be alive because without him and Tamiko, the thing would burn, and there would be no wind to it," another warrior added, and the others nodded in agreement. It wasn’t hard for them anyway.

Besides, they had seen for themselves the kind of shit that happened there.

"If they die, they take with them all the hope we could carry to the next battle. It won’t just be a prince who died or a chief who followed his Erasthai to the end of the world. It would be all of us getting screwed at the same time.

They are it for all of us. They make us want to do anything, and it is really beautiful. But if they are gone, not even the king would be able to save us all," the first warrior said heartily.

"Looks like we all have our work cut out for us, yeah," Danny smiled in gratitude. He had always wished his brother would get this kind of love, the king who was so unconfident. A life that didn’t come with clauses and shit.

And now, years later, he was witnessing it. His brother was loved and adored like he deserved to be. He was proud of Tamiko. He was a really proud elder brother, and he wouldn’t be proud of his best friend.

Oh, Tamiko had done more than was possible.

"For the prince, and Kawai!!" The first warrior shouted, and soon the entire road was filled with chants for the prince and Kawai. They were honorable chants, and it was a beautiful sight.

Hell, even Kosta cheered proudly.

However, amid the cheers, at the very back of the battalion that was heading back home, was a king and his best friend. Two people who had been with Kawai through and through, and they were worried about everything that had already happened.

They walked quietly, watching and listening to the events of the day.

They could still see the prince and his Erasthai before them. Even if it was just a few groups ahead of them.

But they saw them; the kids they had to protect, the kids they had to make sure lived happily. It was a long gamble, seeing as there was always going to be something with those very kids, but that didn’t make it any easier for them to decide on what to do.

"Even after everything, they walk like everything was peaceful and the win was an easy one, Sadako," the king said, breaking the silence between them. His voice was so slow that Sadako almost didn’t hear the man in the midst of the cheers ahead of them.

This was their fate.

"Because that is all they see. When Kaito was stabbed, the world went silent. It wasn’t their duty to Kawai that kept them steady. Not even their loyalty to the Kawai crown. It was because of the barbarian they believed in," Sadako said faintly.

He had seen his fair share of wars, too, and insanities, especially while serving as his best friend’s lord, but today had taken a huge toll on him, too.

He had not been ready for it to turn out like that, even if he was a proud uncle to the two kids who almost sent both of them to hell so early.

"I never thought our kids could control an army with just a shared faint heartbeat. Today was just on its level," Zaffuto admitted.
