As I began plummeting towards the ground, I looked up and saw my mother in full vamp form, except she had massive talons for feet. She didn’t teach me that. She was yelling something at me.

"Repair your wings! Remember the mitochondria!" She said.

"Fucking mitochondria my ass," I said to myself as I focused on repairing my wings.

Nothing was happening and I had 2 seconds before I hit the ground. I couldn’t focus on repairing my wings like this. So I changed my plan in a split second.

I turned over in the air so I was facing down and performed an energy wave before I hit the ground. It sufficiently slowed me down and I was able to drop the remaining couple feet safely.

My mother touched down next to me. "Why do you always do that?" I said.

"Do what?" She said.

"Spring shit on me," I said.

"It’s good training," she said. "How are supposed to learn how to get out of life or death situations if you’ve never been in any? Besides, I would have caught you."

"I’ll believe it when I see it," I said.

I focused now that I wasn’t falling and repaired my wings easily. I picked some clothes out of the system store and clothed myself. They were just some gym shorts since I was still in full vamp form and would need to get proper clothes once I shrank back down to normal size.

I looked in my pants out of childish curiosity, because I hadn’t thought to do that until now. "Nice," I said.

"Get out of your pants, mister!" My mother scolded me.

"Alright, alright. I was just checking how big my dick is in full vamp mode. Geez," I said.

"That’s immature. Size doesn’t matter unless its the size of a pinky. Then you should see a doctor," she said.

"I’m pretty sure that’s not how the saying goes, but ok," I said.

I got a buzz in my head.

[You have 1 new text message from Harold]

’Yes, please open these messages.’

Harold, why are you blowing up my brain phone?

["Hey man, the monster world is in fucking chaos right now. Shit is happening left and right! You need to call me back as soon as you get this!"]

’Ok, I’m not going to open the other ones. Just call Harold.’

[Calling Harold]

"Hey, man! Did you get my texts?" Harold said.

"Yeah, uh, I only read one and called you back. What’s going on?" I said.

"There’s something you need to see. I’ll send you a video," he said.

"I don’t know how—" I started saying, but then a video popped up in from of my face.

[Video received from Harold. Playing now]

"So there have been vault heists all over the city and in other major cities all over the US. Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, even New York. All in the last week and the same MO every time," he said.

"No forced entry, no visible evidence of theft. Just empty vaults and weird security footage."

"What’s weird about it?" I said, as the video started to play.

"Watch the walls," he said. "The reason I’m bringing this to you and not the police, is because this just screams monster heist to me. Humans couldn’t have done this."

I watched the walls, they rippled. And so did the floor in some areas. Then the security footage went black for about 30 seconds. It went back to normal, and I expected to see a bunch of opened and destroyed stuff, but everything looked the same.

"After the cameras go back on, the jewels were already gone. And the weird thing is, they only stole diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and topaz. Nothing else. No money. Just the jewels," Harold said.

"Feels like elementals to me. It was the walls and the floors rippling that gave it away for me. Elementals can just absorb their element right? If they can absorb it, couldn’t they just move through it instead?" I said.

"That make sense," Harold said. "I knew I called the right person. Not that I didn’t call other people."

"What? I wasn’t your first call?" I said.

"I didn’t say that," Harold said.

"You did, but I’ll let it slide. I’m going to call my elemental girl Hope in on this one. She should be able to provide some insights that neither of us can think of," I said.

"Ok, let me know how it goes," he said.

"Alright, talk to you later," I said, as I thought about hanging up.

[Call ended]

"Why are you interfering with this stuff?" Shikasa said. "What makes you think this is any of your business?"

"Like it or not, I am the leader of a monster sect now, and the dragons are gone. That leaves a power vacuum. If the elementals are making a power play to take over the top spot, I have to stop them. I have to ensure that my sect takes over the top spot in the hearts and minds of the other sects," I said.

"It’s not just for my own sense of superiority either. My sect needs to be at the top, if they’re going to follow me into battle and take my orders. If they don’t see me as the leader, then each group will do their own thing, and it will be chaos. We will lose, regardless of whether we have more troops or we’re stronger."

"We have to be united to win, even if our strategy is just, go fight. If it’s every sect for themselves out there we will fall. And the humans will have no one to turn to. They’ll be slaughtered. I don’t want to have the deaths of 8 billion people on my conscience. Would you?"

"I suppose I wouldn’t. When you explain it like that, it make far more sense for you to get involved than not," she said.

"And that’s what I’m going to do," I said.

I hit the button to call Hope in my head.
