Chapter 155: Chapter 155: People from the Past

"It’s alright, some people just need to be taught a lesson. Don’t worry, I’ll handle it," Lin Kuang said with a comforting smile, seeing Liu Shilin’s worried expression.

Hearing this, Liu Shilin could only nod. The three of them walked to the manor’s main entrance, presented their invitations, and entered the mansion and into the main hall.

By then, the vast hall was already packed with people. Some were standing, while others sat on sofas, chatting leisurely. Everyone was in formal attire, and each outfit looked incredibly expensive.

"There sure are a lot of people here," Lin Kuang muttered softly, looking at the crowded room.

"Well, the Zhao Family is the second richest in East Sea, after all," Liu Shilin explained with a smile, standing beside him. "The Lin Family might not be as wealthy as the Zhao Family, but they’re also a prominent power in East Sea. A union between the two naturally draws a large crowd. However, gatherings like this are mostly for networking and business deals. It’s more accurate to say they came to talk business rather than to attend the engagement ceremony."

Lin Kuang nodded, though he couldn’t be bothered with such matters. After a moment of thought, he led Liu Shilin and the Witch away from the crowd, finding a relatively quiet spot to sit down.

The place was abundant with fine food and wine. Although Lin Kuang disliked such gatherings, he was enthusiastic about the food, especially since he hadn’t eaten since noon.

"Do you want something to eat? I’m starving," Lin Kuang asked with a smile, eyeing the array of delicacies.

Hearing this, Liu Shilin was stunned for a moment before giving a wry smile. The food at these events was almost purely decorative; in her experience, she had rarely seen anyone actually eat. However, Lin Kuang’s question sparked her interest.

"Alright, let’s have a bit of everything. Shiyu, how about you?" Liu Shilin said with a smile after a moment’s thought.

"Yes! I’ll have some too. I’m starving to death," the Witch pouted.

"Then wait here. I’ll go get the food," Lin Kuang said, standing up and leaving.

He returned in no time, holding two large plates piled with fruit, various dishes, and even a roast chicken. Once he set them down, Lin Kuang didn’t stand on ceremony. He began to eat heartily, completely disregarding his image.

Seeing this, Liu Shilin and the Witch seemed to be infected by his enthusiasm. The two beauties, one older and one younger, also began to eat, though their manners were far more graceful than Lin Kuang’s.

"Uh, what are they doing? Did they actually come here just to eat?" a young man remarked in utter surprise. His eyes filled with disdain, especially when he saw Lin Kuang’s ravenous eating.

"What do you think, Young Master Liu? Isn’t Liu Shilin the woman you’ve always wanted to pursue? This could be a great opportunity," another young man said with a smile, standing beside the first.

"Hmph, that was in the past. Don’t you know who Liu Shilin has offended? Who would dare get close to her now?" Young Master Liu replied, a hint of trepidation in his eyes. He clearly knew something.

Hearing Young Master Liu’s words, the two men beside him fell silent, a trace of fear in their gazes.

Of course, while some were afraid, others were not. One such person was the man who now appeared before Liu Shilin.

He looked to be in his twenties, dressed in a well-fitted silver tailcoat. He had a handsome, sunny face and a meticulously styled haircut, giving him a bright and clean appearance.

"Shilin, long time no see," the man said with a smile. He looked at Liu Shilin with a tenderness one might reserve for a lover, as if she already belonged to him.

Upon hearing his voice, Liu Shilin, who was in the middle of eating, stiffened. As if recalling something, she suddenly looked up at the newcomer. The moment she saw him, her delicate body trembled slightly, her beautiful eyes flickering with complex emotions. But eventually, her expression settled back into a calm facade.

"Yahao, long time no see," Liu Shilin said with a smile, looking at Wang Ya Hao as if he were just an ordinary friend.

Seeing her calm gaze, Wang Ya Hao’s expression shifted subtly, though it was barely noticeable.

"May I sit down?" he asked with a smile, gesturing to the seat beside her.

"Of course," Liu Shilin replied with a polite smile. "We’re friends."

At her words, Wang Ya Hao’s expression twitched, his smile becoming a bit unnatural. Nevertheless, he sat down next to her. Whether out of habit or by design, he intentionally moved closer to her.

Liu Shilin immediately sensed it and instinctively shifted away, moving closer to Lin Kuang.

Although her movement was subtle, Wang Ya Hao noticed it, and the smile vanished from his face.

"Shilin, have you been well these past few years?" Wang Ya Hao asked, his gaze as tender as ever.

Liu Shilin nodded with a smile. "Yes, quite well."

"Shilin, you’ve changed," Wang Ya Hao said, his expression turning sour as he looked at her distant smile.

"Is that so? People always change, don’t they? Just like you did when you left," Liu Shilin replied, her tone slightly self-deprecating.

"I had no choice back then! My family arranged for me to leave, so I had to go. But now I’ve returned. I came back for you. The reason I didn’t seek you out sooner was because I wanted to surprise you here," Wang Ya Hao explained, his voice becoming audibly more agitated.

Hearing this, Liu Shilin shot him a mocking glance. "Really? To think that Wang Ya Hao, the sole heir to the Wang family—the wealthiest family in East Sea—would abandon the partner he was building a business with to go study abroad alone, all because his family arranged it." She gave a dry laugh. "Don’t you find that a little ironic?"

As she spoke, her expression grew colder.

As it turned out, the two were former classmates. Wang Ya Hao was also the sole heir to the Wang family, the richest family in East Sea. After graduating, they had decided to strive together, planning to start a company. While they had never officially been a couple, they shared deep, unspoken feelings for one another for various reasons.

But at the most difficult point in their venture, Wang Ya Hao had left to study abroad under his family’s arrangements. In truth, he could have defied his family and stayed to build their company with Liu Shilin. But he didn’t. He chose to go abroad.

Liu Shilin remembered spending that entire day in a daze. With his departure, the unspoken feelings between them were severed completely.

Author’s Note: Don’t get the wrong idea, Shilin and this guy have nothing going on, haha.
