Chapter 32: Military Vehicles

I stared at the blue shimmering status window floating above Jerryโ€™s head.

Seeing his stats, I narrowed my eyes.

I gritted my teeth.

Iโ€™m so jealous.

Is he this strong without a system? What tha hell?

My stats before I applied the free stat points were pathetic.

I sighed.

He has 10 mana points. 10 mana points!

Whereas I have...

I actually havenโ€™t checked mine since yesterday. It mightโ€™ve increased. After all, I have no idea how it works.

But I guess mana reaching 10 points is the threshold to awaken a class?

If thatโ€™s so, then I really lucked out with that โ€™words of a guardianโ€™ thing. It seems mana enters the body on its own. And I havenโ€™t even accumulated enough to awaken my class.

Last time I checked, I had 2.5mp.

...Of course, all these are theories. I donโ€™t know for sure how they work. But Iโ€™ll definitely pick up on stuff properly as I navigate them.

I glanced at his window once more.

Light of Elusia, huh.

Whatโ€™s his true name again? Po- something. I know I definitely heard him say it.

I shrugged, whispering, "Iโ€™ll remember it later if itโ€™s important."

Now, letโ€™s see Uncโ€™s... ๐—ณ๐ซ๐šŽ๐—ฒ๐š ๐šŽ๐—ฏ๐•Ÿ๐จ๐˜ƒ๐šŽ๐—น.๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ

I looked at the window floating above Marcus.

Hm?

Not bad at all!

Marcusโ€™s window lacked something present in Jerichoโ€™s.

The presence of a โ€™True Nameโ€™ stat.

Aside from that, the guyโ€™s stats were impressive. Although quite different from Jerichoโ€™s.

It showed he focused more on brute force and strength-related stuff than any other thing.

I wonder what kind of life he lived before this apocalypse.

I do remember him saying he had a dream he was actively chasing before the world โ€™ended.โ€™

I donโ€™t know what that dream of his was, but I do know that these stats are proof of how long he has physically exerted himself.

No wonder heโ€™s kinda burly and muscular.

I almost chuckled, but I just shook my head, staring at the screen.

That mana point, though. Itโ€™s higher than Jerichoโ€™s.

Well, Iโ€™ll still consider 10mp the threshold for awakening oneโ€™s class.

I deactivated all-seeing eyes, and I turned to look at the ruined city behind me.

I wonder how many awakened ones are out there.

Ouu. โ€™Awakened,โ€™ that sounds like a good name!

"Wait." The low voice rang out, cautiousness leaking from it. Jerichoโ€™s voice.

Jerry stood in front of us, left hand raised as he halted immediately.

Both Marcus and I halted too.

"I hear something. A noise. I think they might be monsters?" Said Jerry.

Marcus crouched, clenching his fists. "Really?"

Jerry nodded.

I shook my head, smiling.

"I hear it too," I spoke out.

Jerry turned, staring at me with narrowed eyes. "You do?"

Yup. My perception is higher than yours.

But...

"That isnโ€™t the sound of monsters," I uttered with a low voice, my tone growing more serious.

Underneath my feet, I felt the tiny vibrations. Even the rocks around my legs trembled ever so softly. But it seemed they didnโ€™t notice that.

"Tch. How disappointing." Jerry spat. "Weโ€™re already 20 minutes away from the station."

Marcus looked at me, curiosity swimming in his slightly widened grey eyes. "What is it? What do you hear? I donโ€™t hear anything."

I narrowed my eyes. The trembling and that subtle vibratory motion gradually increased, becoming stronger.

Last time I felt something like this, it was an Endorath.

But this time...

"Itโ€™s a machine," I uttered.

"A damn machine?" Jerry yelled out, voice oozing with frustration.

"Yeah," I crouched lower, placing my palm on the cold ground. "Vehicles, actually."

Marcus stood upright. "Vehicles? Do they still exist?"

Calm down, Mark. Itโ€™s just day 2; of course, they still exist.

"Yeah," I looked at Jerry. "Iโ€™m surprised, myself."

Jerryโ€™s eyes twitched slightly as they met mine. But he blinked and faced forward. "And it sounds like theyโ€™re coming from the mall area โ€” where weโ€™re headed to."

I nodded.

Sharp.

"Letโ€™s keep moving then. Weโ€™ll meet the vehicles eventually." Said Marcus. "I wanna see the.. unique people still driving in this ruined world."

I nodded. "Me too. Weโ€™re just ten minutes away from the mall after all."

Jerry grumbled, muttering, "Thatโ€™s twenty minutes of no monsters."

Hey, I need the monsters more than you do. And I probably hate this more than you do, too. But Iโ€™m not complaining.

So just shut up.

And Jerryโ€™s supposed to be the mature one?

I frowned.

Heโ€™s being so unlike himself.

Acting like a damn kid.

We continued moving forward with the knowledge that the source of that metallic rattling sound wasnโ€™t a new, strange monster, but vehicles.

As we got closer to the vehicle, the rattling sound increased, becoming more painfully obvious that it was a vehicle. And the vibrations under my leg also increased.

Hm?

"I think thatโ€™s it," Marcus said, staring ahead.

His words caused both Jerry and me to halt.

I didnโ€™t need to squint my eyes much.

From the scattered ruins on the street, green-painted vehicles emerged.

About seven of them.

Jerry shifted his position slightly. "Huh? Arenโ€™t those...?"

Indeed.

They were military vehicles.

Vrooomโ€“!!

They zoomed forward โ€” toward our direction โ€” with feral speed as they continuously honked the horn of the vehicle.

"Military vehicles," Marcus added, his voice unusually low.

We stood frozen in the pile of ruins, staring at the incoming vehicles that zoomed in desperately as if their entire lives depended on how fast they were.

Suddenly, just before they could reach โ€” and ultimately pass us by โ€” Marcus ran forward, standing in the middle of their path.

The veins in my forehead bulged as my eyes widened. "What the hell is wrong with that guy?!"
