Chapter 45: OVERSLEPT

They were in the parking lot, and Ema was alone because Denzel was already in the car. She intentionally forgot something and then let her husband wait inside the car. What a clever woman. And now she wanted to talk.

"Can I talk with you?"

"To me?" Hazel tilted her head while still hugging Ranon. They shouldn’t be here for long because there could be someone who would be able to recognize them.

"No. I need to talk with you," Ema said as she stared at Ranon. She looked calm, but Hazel could see the anxiety in her eyes. She was afraid of rejection.

"You can talk here."

"No, I need to talk only with you. This is not something that someone else should hear."

"She is my future wife; she is not someone else."

"Okay, I will leave." Hazel felt a little bit awkward with her position because she was still hugging Ranon; thus, she released him, but Ranon pushed her head against his chest again.

"You stay." Ranon put his arm around her lower back and trapped her in his arms.

"Ranon, don’t be difficult." Ema furrowed her brows. "Let bygones be bygones."

"I never even think about the past." Ranon caressed Hazel’s head. "If you don’t have anything else to say, I will take my leave."

Ranon then took Hazel’s hand and then walked towards their car. Hazel turned her head and looked at her; she waved at her as a ’goodbye’ gesture, but unfortunately, Ema took that as if she was mocking her.

"You don’t need to do this as revenge. You don’t even believe in marriage!" She shouted as her last attempt to get Ranon’s attention.

However, Ranon kept walking, and Ema’s eyes fixed on Hazel; they stared at each other for a while, and when Hazel thought she was going to shout again, Ema actually turned around and then left.

Hazel tugged Ranon’s sleeve to get his attention. "Are you okay to get your mother angry like that?" She grinned, teasing him, but when she saw the look on his face, she shut her mouth. "I am just kidding. It’s a joke, it’s a joke."

"Get in." Ranon opened the car door and let her enter first. He held the door for her and buckled her up once she was sitting.

"I am not a child, you know; I can do it on my own."

Ranon was not in the mood to reply to that; he walked around the car and then started the engine. They were going to the Coinesance hotel now.

Hazel felt lucky because right now she had a valid reason to be there, and on their way there she was thinking of a way to get to Arlo...

Arthur was livid. He was so angry because things didn’t go as he planned. The job was messy, and he couldn’t find someone that was as capable as River.

"Where the hell is she!?" Denzel slammed his hand against the table, and it let out a creaking sound under the pressure.

He alternated between angry and then worried.

Until now, he didn’t even realize the crucial role of River. He had never thought she would go missing for weeks. It was close to two months, and they got nothing, not even a single news about her. Nothing.

Right now, he was easily angry with anyone. He would lash out whenever the job was not done properly. Before, it was River’s job to make sure everything went according to their plan.

"Fuck!"

Arthur picked up his phone and called his subordinates to ask about River. Any news would do, anything, but then they could only apologize because there was nothing they could find about her. It almost felt as if they were chasing after a ghost.

"You can’t even find one person! You are useless imbeciles!" He threw his phone across the room, and it shattered against the wall.

"Father..." Aubrey entered the room because she had been listening; her father was losing it. She brought a cup of coffee and snacks. "Are you okay?" she asked in a soft voice.

However, her step faltered when she looked at her father’s face. She was scared because she could feel it... The anger was directed at her.

"Tell me the truth," Arthur asked Aubrey calmly, but this was even scarier than when he shouted at her, which he had never done. "What happened that night with River? There is no way she has gone missing for this long without any news."

Aubrey put the coffee and the snack on the table and faced her father. She frowned and looked confused. "I have told you everything, Father... What else should I tell you again?" Aubrey helped her father to sit down and started to massage his shoulders to help him to relax. "Father... I will help with everything that I can if it can help to find River, but I have told you everything. I don’t know what else I should tell you."

Arthur said nothing; he didn’t seem to enjoy the massage from her too. He stared at the distance when he spoke. "If you had been able to keep your legs closed, this mess wouldn’t have happened."

Aubrey bit her lip; she felt humiliated. "I am sorry, Father..." she said in a whisper; she pushed down her anger.

"Hmm?" Hazel rubbed her eyes; she yawned and then stretched her body. She felt there was something not right, and when she opened her eyes, she realized it was not in her bedroom. "Where am I?"

"Forget?" Ranon asked; he only had a towel hanging around his waist, and Hazel’s eyes bulged. Her mind worked sluggishly to remember what happened, and she felt like she wanted to slap herself.

She overslept!

She should have gone to Arlo’s room and done what she had to do, but she was too exhausted and overslept.

"Get up; we are going to have breakfast with Mr. Barlowe."

Hazel perked up, but then nausea hit her. Her morning sickness came in full force, and she rushed to the bathroom.
