Chapter 313: I WANT YOU

River sneaked into Ash’s bedroom. She expected to see her little sleeping face. She had been very impatient, to the point of being reckless, because she missed her daughter so much. It was difficult to explain.

But to her annoyance, Ashlyn was not there. Her daughter was not sleeping in her bed.

And when River thought about checking on the master bedroom, she found Ranon was already at the door and closed it behind his body.

She knew almost immediately what was coming. This man is very... annoying!

"Where is Ash? Where did you hide her?" River pressed her lips tightly because she was very upset. Ranon had tricked her, and that was very obvious. She walked into his trick foolishly.

"Why do you want to see her?" Ranon crossed his arms. His sharp gaze met with River’s.

River was conflicted. She was not sure where to begin or how to explain this situation. Ranon should have known it, right? Or, at least he had an inkling of what happened. But why did he act as if he knew nothing about it?

River met his eyes. She was trying to find the right words or the right way to explain herself. Would he believe her?

"I..." River gritted her teeth. The words didn’t want to come out of her mouth.

However, she had gone through so much. She had survived near-death experiences twice and run away from Rafael to be here. She was not going to give in.

"Because... I miss her." River felt her throat was tightening. The feeling overwhelmed her. "I promised to give her two stuffed bunnies when I come back, but I didn’t have money to buy them on my way here."

River watched as Ranon walked toward her, and she waited for him to call her crazy. But instead, he didn’t say anything; he listened to what she said without interrupting.

"Where is she?"

River didn’t even realize she was crying until Ranon gently wiped away the tears from her cheeks. He brushed with his thumb and cradled the side of her face.

"Why should I let a stranger meet with my daughter?" Ranon asked. His voice was extremely low, even though it was only the two of them here in the closed room.

"A stranger?" River was upset because Ranon kept pretending. But at the same time, she wanted to laugh. "Your story about Little Red Riding Hood is so stupid. The grandma didn’t shoot the wolf. Did you tell the story to Ashlyn like that before she fell asleep? You were going to give her a nightmare."

Ranon’s eyes flickered.

"She likes my version, though."

After saying that, Ranon pulled River’s body in a bone-crushing hug. He buried his face against her shoulder, hugging her so tight as if he wanted to merge with her so she would never leave him again.

River was surprised, but she cried silently when the feeling of relief washed over her body and soul.

He knew.

Ranon knew.

She didn’t need to explain herself about something she didn’t understand, something that confused her.

Ranon recognized her; he knew it was her.

Little Red Riding Hood was the story that Hazel asked him to tell her during her labor, the intimate moment that only the two of them knew, especially the silly part where Ranon made up the story, since he didn’t know the original version.

"It’s you... It’s really you..." Ranon kissed her neck, and Hazel could feel how wet it was.

Was Ranon crying?

She had never seen him crying. He was always too stoic. She even wondered if he shed tears when she died, but now he was crying...

River didn’t manage to see it when Ranon kissed her.

His kisses were familiar and addictive. River only wanted to savor this moment together with him. She had thought of a thousand ways to slip back into his and Ashlyn’s lives, knowing how hard it would be to win him back.

However, she wouldn’t have imagined it would end this way... It is the best ending that she could get.

His fingers ran through her hair as he deepened the kiss. It was wet from their tears.

But all of a sudden, the door opened. Ranon apparently didn’t lock it; he just closed the door, so Lucian had a heart attack for the second time today to see the two of them.

"Ah! What are the two of you doing?! You, woman! You seduce him!" Lucian pointed his finger at River, but he quickly realized that was not the case. "Wait! What? No, Ranon! What are you doing?!"

River was upset because of the interruption, but when she was about to pull away from Ranon, his hand that cradled her face held her firmly as he pressed himself against her body.

River opened her eyes because she was curious. Ranon was still kissing her, but he gave Lucian a deadly glare, which made the other man close the door and hurry away.

Poor Lucian. It would be harder for him to understand the situation. But then, neither Ranon nor River wanted to explain a single thing to anyone.

At that moment, they just wanted to spend this time alone together.

"No, not here." River breathed raggedly when Ranon was about to push her down to the bed.

This was Ashlyn’s bedroom; it didn’t feel right. Moreover, River was rather self-conscious because she had not yet taken a bath for a whole day. She had been outside, exposed to dirt and germs, in order to return here.

Ranon stopped. He pressed his forehead against hers. His hand was still on her back and cradled her face. He breathed heavily.

For a moment, they only stayed like that. The silence felt comforting.

Even when she was completely a different person, Ranon felt the same. The comfort and the solace that he felt whenever he was with her. The energy she radiated and the way she touched him... It was her, and Ranon knew that without a shadow of a doubt.

"So, you kiss a stranger easily?" River teased him after a long moment of silence. She lifted her head to look at him.

River was tall for a woman, but Ranon was still taller than her. She was still impressed that she didn’t hurt her neck when she was in Hazel’s body.

"Hm, sometimes."

River could hear the laughter in his voice, but she stepped on his feet anyway for saying that. "How many strangers have you kissed by now?"

"I don’t know; I don’t count."

River widened her eyes. Now she was upset. But Ranon pressed her face against his chest and kissed the top of her head.

"It’s only your lips that I want to kiss." Ranon kissed her shoulder and whispered into her ear. "If it’s not you, I don’t want anyone else."

"Technically speaking, I am not even myself."

Ranon shook his head. "It’s you. Whether you are Hazel, River, or anyone else, it’s only you that I want."

River almost forgot how good Ranon was with his words. A smile bloomed on her face. "Even if I am a worm?"

And Ranon kissed her lips again. River thought she was in desperate need to take a bath...

Meanwhile, outside of the room, Lucian was still reeling from what he had just seen. He stared at the television, but he didn’t really watch it, as he replayed the event of ten minutes ago.

No way.

He knew Ranon so well. He was not the type who would have a casual relationship. By this day, he had only had two women: Ema and Hazel.

For someone like him, it was still flabbergasting that his experience with women was so little. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Therefore, Lucian couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that Ranon kissed that assassin woman. Was he drunk from the adrenaline rush after he was with Hazel? Since that woman was full of mystery, he jumped straight to River to get the same feeling?

Lucian shook his head. That was ridiculous.

That behavior was completely out of character for Ranon!

And when Lucian saw Ranon walk to the living room, he immediately rushed toward him with a horror in his eyes.

"What was that? Tell me that I didn’t really see it. That’s wrong, right? Where is she?"

"Taking a bath," Ranon said lightly. He walked past Lucian to the kitchen, while the latter followed him. Ranon grabbed a glass of water from the fridge.

"Taking a bath? Where?"

Ranon gave him a look. Why would he want to know where River was taking a bath?

"Ranon, you are not crazy, right? I am not crazy, right? Don’t tell me you fancy her. No. No. No." Hazel was already bad, but now it’s River? "You know she is an assassin, right? Heaven, Ranon! Can you find a normal woman? I can introduce you to another woman. You know, I know a lot of women."

"From your gambling place?" Ranon seemed to be in a very good mood as he saw that the way Lucian was panicking was rather cute.

"No, I don’t gamble anymore. I have quit. Tell me what kind of woman you want. I will introduce you to them."

Ranon smiled at Lucian, which made him think that Ranon would agree to his suggestion, but then his eyes focused on someone else.

"I want someone like her." Ranon nodded to the person behind Lucian.

Lucian almost jumped out of his skin when he saw that River was already standing behind him.

"Give me the list of the women you are going to introduce to Ranon so I can save my time," River said dangerously.
