Chapter 37: Investigation

Lukas stepped in front of the reception counter. On top of the grand wooden table was a neat steel plaque with three words written in crimson letters:

Battle Board.

Just one look at those letters and Lukas instantly felt as if someone had placed a blade on his throat—cold and sharp. Whoever had written those words was someone with extreme killing intent.

It was only when he took a deep breath that his mental state finally returned to normal.

With his heart filled with subdued vigilance, he started going through every item one by one.

"Low‑grade Seven‑Horned Ox Breathing Method – 125 Contribution Points.

Low‑grade Sky‑Turning Absorption Method – 100 Contribution Points..."

Lukas muttered. Most items he had never seen in the open market before. Even if they were there, they didn’t have price tags on them and were mostly for the sake of attracting awakeners.

There were even body‑refining methods that he desperately needed.

"Iron Hide Body‑Refining Method. A low‑grade method that can help an awakener reach Rank 3 Body‑Refining realm..."

Lukas’s eyes twinkled. If he could get his hands on this method, he could finally walk the proper path of an awakener.

The more he thought about the technique, the better it seemed.

"Just Contribution Points..."

It wasn’t even that expensive. After a few successful hunts he might be able to accumulate enough.

Making a note of this method in his head, Lukas didn’t immediately leave but continued looking to see what else they had for sale.

Farther down the list, he even spotted weapons. Lukas became interested. He was in urgent need of a weapon, especially a sword. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

Even though his basic sword mastery had advanced to intermediate, he didn’t have a proper weapon to make use of it.

Moreover, the swords weren’t even that expensive, so he decided to purchase one later.

With that thought in mind, his eyes continued to scan the list until, after a few minutes, one item caught his attention.

"Blood‑streaked Qi‑Link Potion – doubles the efficiency of star‑energy absorption methods."

"This is it." Lukas’s eyes lit up. This was exactly what he needed. Considering the situation of the settlement, it was quite clear no one was going to give him six hours to sit around meditating and recover all of his lost star energy.

After deciding on the two items he was going to purchase, Lukas turned toward the receptionist—a beautiful lady dressed in a tight‑fitting formal dress with the mark of Roaring Dragon Guild engraved on her chest.

Without wasting any time, he directly stated his intention.

"Excuse me, madam, I would like to purchase one Blood‑Infused Copper Sword and a Blood‑Streaked Qi‑Link Potion."

Maybe tired after dealing with tens of awakeners before him, or something else, but at first the receptionist didn’t respond to his words at all. It was only when Lukas repeated his request, this time in a louder voice, that she finally turned to look at him, her two large eyes filled with cold aloofness as they scanned his figure.

Just after one look, the woman lost all interest in him, her eyes turning even colder.

She simply nodded and walked deeper into the long corridor to pick up his things.

Lukas’s expression turned slightly strange, not expecting to get such a cold‑shoulder treatment, but the next moment his expression returned to normal.

Who cares. I’m not here to impress some random chick.

With that thought in mind, he patiently waited. Maybe the receptionist was in a hurry or something else, but she didn’t take long, and barely a few minutes later she returned, carrying one large three‑foot sword and a glass bottle in her hand.

Having already wasted enough time, he swiftly paid and made his way out of the exchange room.

...

After walking out, the first thing he did was examine the sword: a three‑foot long double‑edged blade made from copper mixed with the blood essence of monsters found around Roaring Dragon Settlement. This item was the specialty of the Roaring Dragon Guild, known for being highly durable and sharp.

Lukas even swung it a few times to get a feel for it.

Swoosh! Swoosh!

The blade made a screeching sound while cutting through the air. After getting the hang of it, Lukas put the sword aside and turned his attention to the Blood‑Streaked Qi‑Link Potion.

Hmm. Now I just need to find a safe place to start meditating.

Although he had mostly used passive skills with almost negligible consumption of star energy, even then his star‑energy reserve had fallen by half.

Lukas didn’t feel safe in this state.

Just as he was thinking, suddenly his ears twitched. Turning his head sharply, he saw multiple people coming in his direction.

Among them he even spotted one familiar figure.

The only female member of his former squad—the sickly girl with dark circles under her eyes.

The moment Lukas noticed her was also the moment the girl took note of him. Instantly an excited smile appeared on her face.

"There he is! This is the criminal I was talking about. Not only did he kill Mr. Gordon, the leader of the squad, but he also took away all the beast crystals!"

Lukas’s expression sank. He wasn’t worried about the girl, but about the guards. The guards accompanying her belonged to the Roaring Dragon Guild, dressed in full metal armour from head to toe. These people were from the Roaring Dragon Law and Order division, responsible for maintaining order during such serious situations.

Before he could even move, the guards hurriedly surrounded him from all sides, their cold gleaming weapons placed directly on his throat.

Gulp.

Lukas swallowed hard, cold sweat rolling down his forehead. After being surrounded by fully armoured soldiers with cultivation greater than his own, he was very nervous, but he didn’t let it show on his face.

With a slightly confused look, he tilted his head sideways and asked:

"Is there some mistake, officers?"

"What gall! How dare you act all innocent after killing the squad leader in cold blood, you bastard...!"

The sickly girl started shouting like a banshee, cursing Lukas in all sorts of inventive ways, as if Lukas hadn’t killed Gordon but her husband.

Just as the girl was starting to get a little too loud, a young man with a head full of golden hair and a face that could charm the heart of any young girl came forward and coldly said:

"Silence."

Immediately, the girl’s face turned pale. Her mouth opened and closed a few times but no words came out.

Then the man turned to Lukas and said in an even tone:

"Awakener Lukas, we have a few questions for you. Hope you will cooperate. If you are indeed innocent in this matter, we will let you go. And if, after investigation, you are found guilty... then be prepared to face the consequences."

By the end of his words, the young guard’s face had turned cold as ice.
