Chapter 67 - I Cannot Teach You If You Do Not Open Yourself To Me

When the memory faded, Lady Karina shook her head uncertainly.

Did the morals of what her mother taught her really matter under these circumstances? If she was intending to use Orpheus' desires to her advantage, then why not use this as an opportunity to get closer and learn the answers to her questions?

That seemed like the logical thing to do since the man was her enemy and she needed to be smart about the way she exacted her revenge.

"If you wish to learn that which you have no concept of, then you need to open yourself to me," Lady Karina stated, bringing her warm hand to his cheek. "I cannot teach you something if you don't allow me to."

That had been true and Orpheus couldn't argue with her point.

If he was ever to learn and experience the light of her world, then he needed to let her step into his darkness and see all that was hidden there.

It was something Orpheus wasn't prepared for since he never had any intentions of allowing a woman to weave her way into his heart and mind, yet Lady Karina had become an exception to that rule.

Opening the ice walls around his heart and mind would be no easy feat and would take time before he could entrust what was inside him to her, but he would have to try.

"I do not know if such a thing is possible," Orpheus answered, savouring the feeling of her hand against his cheek, his eyes closing as if he was drifting off to sleep from her touch. "I am not fond of people trying to infiltrate my head."

"That may be so." Lady Karina nodded understandingly, knowing it would be a difficult task for Orpheus. "You have much to work on, Orpheus. First, we will need to gain each other's trust before you allow yourself to open up to me; then only I can teach you what you wish to know."

The lady spoke sense; hence, he agreed with her perspective.

While he didn't exactly see how it was necessary for him to reveal what was inside him to her in order to learn, if that was what she wanted, then so be it.

"I cannot promise that it will be easy," Orpheus said, turning his head to kiss her palm. "And I cannot promise that results would show overnight."

"And I do not expect you to make haste with this." She offered him a warm smile, one that could have very well melted the ice walls around his heart right then and there. "I know there will be trials and failures, but I can put in the work if you are willing to."

"Aye, my lady," Orpheus replied, gazing at her through half-lidded eyes, which made the dual shades more attractive than before. She didn't always know which eye to focus on. "If that is your wish, I will try to accommodate it."

Lady Karina nodded, grateful that they could find some sort of middle ground between them.

However, the night was growing late and she had no desire to remain any longer to find out what punishment Orpheus had in store for her.

She hopped off the desk now that there was some space between them that would allow her to slip past him without any hindrances.

"I am weary, my lord," she addressed him formally again. "The journey tomorrow is early and I must have as much rest as the hours of the night allow. I would ask that you postpone your punishment for me to another time."

Aside from her weariness, she was still embarrassed about the state of her arousal between her thighs and was in discomfort due to the dampness.

She would rush to her chambers and bathe to wash off the feeling and then tuck herself into bed and pray that her dreams would make her forget.

Orpheus reached for her but Lady Karina was swift to dart her way past him towards the door, only stopping briefly at the threshold.

"Goodnight," she whispered almost inaudibly and was gone before he could wish her a well-rested night.

Normally, he would have grabbed her and not allowed her to have run from him in the first place, but much was on his mind.

Orpheus could tell by the fire in her eyes that she had no desire to stay beside him any longer; hence, it was better that he'd allowed her to go.

And while he had kept his growing lust under wraps just moments ago, it would be a long while before he completely settled down.

He also had questions.

Questions such as why the lady had the fresh scent of grass and flowers on her, particularly a flower that was not grown in Moonveil's gardens.

Or why had there been fine, yet stiff, white strands of hair on her black hooded coat?

Had she gone to the stables and spent some time amongst the stables? And why exactly was she in the solar in the first place if she had gone to see Lady Drosera in the vault?

It did not help to ease Orpheus' growing suspicions, especially ever since he'd seen scorch marks with slight shapes of paw prints on the solar floor the last time.

And as far as he knew, Moonveil did not have any pets, only the livestock out in the barn.

Orpheus sauntered to where the white phoenix tapestry was hung up, glancing over it as the moonlight from the window illuminated its details.

"If I allow myself to open up to her, perhaps I could lure her into revealing something about this beast," Orpheus thought out aloud, his fingers tracing over the white phoenix's wings. "If the scriptures held any truth about a sanctuary, the gateway must be close by."

Orpheus wasn't merely a man who pursued myths on a whim; he'd done his fair share of research over the years.

Every castle he stormed and conquered would always have their archives or libraries be the first thing to be raided by his knights.

He'd combed through tomes and scrolls in search of any truth to the legends of the white phoenix and its resting place, hoping that one day his efforts would lead him to his goal.

As a man who never abandoned his ambitions, he pieced together different bits of information until some parts had begun to make sense to him.

All that he'd known about the White Phoenix was that the beast rested and lay dormant somewhere in Ethuaria, in somewhere around Moonveil to be specific.

One of the ancient tomes even claimed that there were other beasts that had settled alongside the White Phoenix in a hidden sanctuary, and Orpheus had gone to quite some extremities to attain such tomes in his possession.

"One way or another, Karina," Orpheus said, his gaze darkening. "I will make you mine and I will have this curse broken by the White Phoenix."

There was not much else to be said; once the man had his sight set on a target, it would inevitably become his.
