Due to her throat nearly dying from nerves, Lady Karina coughed lightly.
"I do not possess such skills," she answered him, fidgeting with her fingers on her lap half under the table. "The point I implied was that the best I am capable of against an enemy is perhaps tickling them to death."
Lyall snorted again.
Her comment had unexpectedly brought laughter and smiles to the knights around the table.
And Orpheus was not oblivious to the fact that she was humorous, nor was he ignorant of the male attention on her; he was only focused on his seething jealousy.
The men around the table were well-known to him for he had fought alongside them, some nearly dying on occasion and some were as close as brothers.
However, their kind attention to Lady Karina had his murderous instincts raging to defend what belonged to him.
It was perhaps the strangest feeling he'd ever experienced.
"From what I remember," Orpheus said with no humour in his tone whatsoever, "you did not tickle. You attempted to bite and Caelum nearly lost his fingers."
Lady Karina's cheeks flushed a dull red as she lowered her gaze to her lap, unsure of what more to say.
She felt embarrassed, wishing she could have sunk through the floor and vanished somewhere they'd never find her.
Why did he have to speak about that?
"Aye, I would not blame the lady entirely," Caelum spoke from across the table, stirring the wine in his enamel mug. "It is my fault for my less than knightly treatment towards her at the time."
Orpheus didn't shy away from glaring at the youngster for daring to defend Lady Karina in his presence.
If anything, he took it as a challenge.
Caelum didn't utter another word but Lady Karina was grateful that he seemed apologetic about his behaviour.
For sure, she wanted to gouge out his eyes when he smacked her.
The table fell silent again now that Orpheus had made his claim known.
His sour intervention was not welcome and it simply made Lady Karina lean back in her chair with her arms folded, losing her appetite once more.
The rest of the knights went about their conversations like before, excluding her.
She noticed that one of the generals requested three of the remaining male servants that were spared to play a few instruments for entertainment.
Moonveil was known for its love of music and instruments, but much of that had died the day of the invasion.
She remembered how she used to love dancing in the orchard fields whenever a few of the servants practiced their instrumental skills at noon each day in the spring.
Such days were bliss and it was one of the moments she could let go to be wild and free.
Lady Karina was no graceful dancer for her mother, the Lady Hyacinth, was of Irishala descent and those folk were known for their free-spirited dances.
Their dance movements were fast-paced and alluring in some ways.
And it brought a smile to her face when the three male servants returned with their instruments: a hurdy-gurdy, a tambourine, and a shawm.
As Lady Karina recalled it, it was each of their specialities, which only meant they intended to play her favourite Irishala cultural tune.

Without properly thinking the situation through, she immediately stood up when the three male servants began playing.
Where and whom she was with was quickly forgotten.
Lady Karina kicked off her shoes and pulled the ribbon from her hair, letting the golden locks run free.
As if by instinct and on cue, she moved her body like wildfire, twisting and turning in ways that seemed unusual for a prim and proper lady.
The Van Merikh knights and Orpheus quietened down, each of them giving her their full attention.
The lady was completely in a world of her own as she rolled her hips sharply and fluidly and then broke off into a spin.
The skirt of her dress swayed and flared with every spin, resembling flames that wavered from a breeze.
It had been a long while since she last danced and it was as if the melodies controlled her body when she began singing along to the tunes.
Orpheus was completely enchanted by her free spirit, never knowing that she could possess such a wild side.
Did all the ladies at Moonveil learn to dance this way?
It would take a fool not to notice how mesmerised he was, though he tried to control it.

Lyall was the one who could see his liege's struggle with composure by the way the man's grip tightened around his wine mug.
Yet Lady Karina had no care in the world as she set her pace around the table.
She lifted her arms above her head, flicking her wrists and then curling her fingers.
And it didn't take long for her breathless laughter to ring out as she danced closer to the male servants.
They watched her fondly and always welcomed her Irishalan dances.
And for Orpheus? The man was utterly frozen, unable to look away.
"God's blood..." He muttered under his breath.
With every arch of her back that she made, her hair spilled free like a golden sunset.
Every snap of her hips and sway of her waist kept his eyes locked on her, completely stunned by the wildness of her dance.
It was nothing graceful or fancy, but her charm had certainly gotten the attention of every man at the table.
The lady wasn't even trying to be seductive—simply lost in that dance.
Yet that somehow made matters worse because it nearly made it impossible for him to breathe or think straight.
And the man nearly lost all sense of his rationality when the firelight from the hearth caught onto her skin and the flush in her cheeks showed.
