True Alpha's Chosen Mate-Chapter 294: A dream of a little girl
Lisha looked at me. I knew that condemning look she would usually give me every time she would judge me in her head. She had served me since we were children for me to get familiar with this strict woman. Despite that, she was the only person I could trust in this manor.
’This time, I am innocent, Lisha. Stop looking at me as if I just hired a male escort.’ I communicated silently and mentally rolled my eyes.
I cleared my throat as I set my eyes back on Sven. "Lisha, hand him the reward," said I, watching Lisha let out a shallow breath before handing the pouch full of gold to him. Seeing this, I spoke once again.
"I said, a year’s worth, Lisha. I don’t think that is enough," I stressed while sporting a poker face. She looked at me for a second, blinking twice. To my relief, Lisha went along with my petty display of wealth.
"This is enough for a traveler to survive in comfort for two years, my lady," she affirmed in a polite tone while I rocked my head.
"Is that so?" I quirked a brow and set my eyes back to Sven.
His pair of russet eyes went round, looking at me in shock. I wasn’t sure if this was a look of ’you’re that rich?’ or ’don’t rub your riches on my face’ kind of shock. Either way, this petty display of wealth slightly healed my bruised ego.
Sven kept on insisting to give him a single copper or two. His intention might come from the goodness of his heart, but alas, it grazed my ego. It made me think he sees me as someone who wouldn’t survive after shelling out just a few golds.
Although I told myself not to let my emotions get the better of me, these words already escaped my mouth. I didn’t regret it, though.
"Wow..." Sven was in awe as he checked the content of the pouch. "I didn’t think I’d see this many golds in my life."
When he raised his head at me, I flinched at the bright grin on his face.
"Has anyone told you you’re perfect?" he asked while pulling the drawstrings to close the pouch. "Not only you’re beautiful on the outside, but your insides are also, even more attractive. This world is really amazing. I didn’t think I’d ever meet someone whose beauty was something men might die for and who is also kind. It’s the perfect combination!"
His lips stretched until his small canines on the side were showing. "I think I’m in love!"
My expression died as I knew he was simply complimenting me just so I wouldn’t change my mind and take back the rewards I had given him. Although I must admit. What he said sounded so unfamiliar to me. Not praises, but the part of being beautiful and kind.
Until now, I believed being kind wasn’t attractive at all. It was a trait of a weak person; someone who wouldn’t last long in this madhouse. And yet, this man just spewed all that carelessly.
’I really can’t stand him,’ I thought, clearing my throat as my expression grew cold. "Anyway, since that is already said and done, Lisha will guide you to the safe exit. Avoid bumping into anyone, especially avoid Paris. I don’t want to deal with him right now."
I cast Lisha a look, and she gave me a nod. "I understand, my lady." She then face Sven and tilted her down politely.
"Sir, I’ll lead the way. Please follow me," said Lisha, treating this wild werewolf with respect, just like how she treated everybody else. He simply shot her a smile and a nod before he faced me.
"Alright." He patted his thigh before he stood. As soon as he was up on his feet, the side of his lips curled up into a charming smile, placing his hand that was holding the pouch across his chest.
"My lady, it disheartens me that our time together is fleeting. It’s a shame we didn’t get to know each other. However, once I reached the last island of my adventure, I’ll make sure to give you a copy of my book of adventure," he remarked while keeping his eye contact. "Until then."
’Please. I don’t want to see you once again,’ was my reply, but I bit my tongue as I watched him smile at Lisha once again. He should stop smiling for no reason, I thought.
I remained silent, staring at his broad shoulders as he followed Lisha’s tracks while tossing and catching the pouch leisurely. I kept my eyes in that direction even after they left.
"Really..." I whispered along with a deep sigh, closing my eyes while my finger was zeroing on my temple. "Don’t even dream about it, Callie." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Although I repelled his parting remarks, it touched a part of me that no one else did. It was as though a small part of me held onto those words that sounded like a promise.
"I really can’t stand him," I added, reopening my eyes as I threw my head back and looked at the ceiling.
It was true that I couldn’t stand Sven. We only talked for less than an hour, but I was a hundred percent certain his insufferable presence was something I couldn’t tolerate. Not because I disliked him as a person or he was creeping me out — well, quite so. It was also not because the stories he was so excited to share with everyone who had ears were not interesting enough.
Actually, it was the opposite. His tales were simply filled with strokes of misadventures and luck — they’re gripping.
The reason I didn’t want to listen or I couldn’t stand him was because... of my own issues. I envied him. That wild werewolf was living the life I had always wanted; he was living with all freedom in the world. Something that I would never get being born as part of the Highmore Clan.
"Don’t think about it. He doesn’t exist. Erase him and his stupid life in your head," I urged, pinching the bridge of my nose while repeating those words over and over and over until I succeeded. "It’s a stupid dream, Callie."
I nodded. "That’s right." I huffed as I straightened my back, keeping my chin held high, tucking away the stupid dream of the little girl in the deepest part of my brain where there was no way it would resurface ever again.
"He’s just someone I met in passing and there’s no way our paths will cross again." I nodded in agreement.
Little did I know, fate had another plan in store for me.
