Chapter 268: What are you fighting for?

"What are you fighting for?"

Daniel asked before another kick landed on Cedrick’s arms, which the latter used to block his attack, but to no avail. The force and weight of his attack still pushed Cedrick back, putting him at a more disadvantage as Daniel reappeared at his side and punched him in the jaw.

Cedrick could only try to defend himself and minimize his injuries, but Daniel was slowly breaking that defense bit by bit.

"I asked you..." he heard the animal growl behind him once again. "... what are you fighting for?!"

CRACK...

His other wing broke this time, urging a loud grunt from the vampire before crushing to the ground.

’What am I fighting for?’ he wondered as he coughed out blood, each breath causing his lungs to constrict. Cedrick grabbed the ground as he tried to stand once again, only to slump back down at the excruciating pain in his back.

What was he fighting for? Again, that question hovered over his head, followed by another question; why were his attacks felt flimsy compared to Daniel’s? That even when he could keep up with his speed, he would meet the ground over and over. It was just exhausting him, but not Daniel.

"Ugh..." Cedrick groaned weakly, crawling on the ground. He blinked his mangled eyes, looking up at the feet strutting towards him.

Cedrick was strong. He wouldn’t be able to kill Tomas and force Elizabeth to a feral state if he weren’t a tough opponent. But Daniel was of a different caliber. Especially when Daniel, who was often calm and collected, was fighting out of anger. His every attack was stronger than the last, paying tribute to all who had lost their lives fighting honorably for the empire.

"Ugh!" he winced when Daniel grabbed a chunk of his hair, dragging him up until he flipped, lying flat on his bleeding back.

Blood pooled underneath him, panting for air, eyes at the person gazing down at him while wearing a broken and dirty mask that looked like a lamb.

"Are you wondering how come you cannot even land a blow on me?" asked Daniel, as he scoffed in ridicule. His Adam’s apple moved as he huffed, causing fog to form in front of his face.

"Because I know what I am fighting for. You, on the other hand, is strong, but you don’t have any direction," came out an emotionless voice, placing his foot on Cedrick’s forehead.

"Cedrick," he continued. "You should’ve pretended you and Azazel were our ally."

Cedrick watched how Daniel’s eyes glinted behind the mask. Daniel beat him up terribly, giving him no chance to retaliate, like an animal who gone mad.

"Ally..." he mocked under his breath, snapping his eyes and shifting it to the starless night sky.

Why would they pretend they were allies if they weren’t in the first place? Azazel exerted so much effort to paint himself as a good person, dragging Niall’s name and the Hendrik Empire through the mud.

He did all that for this day to come. So, what made Daniel think they should be better off as allies?

"Your Highness," he whispered, ignoring the sudden weight over him as Daniel squatted down on top of him for the finishing blow.

His eyes were glossy, revisiting his life serving Azazel. Ever since he came into this world, or rather, ever since Azazel brought him to this world, he already spoke his oath to stand as a tool for the child of evil. That whatever Azazel’s plans, Cedrick would do everything to make it happen.

So the question of what was he was fighting for... the answer was obvious. But for some reason, he couldn’t answer Daniel’s repeating question. Not that what he was feeling right now was regret. It was more like he was finally free.

He felt liberated, and he didn’t understand why.

’It seems this is as far as I can accompany you,’ he thought bitterly, knowing this was truly the end for him. ’May you achieve your goal, Your Highness...’

He forced a smile as he glanced at Daniel for a second. Cedrick couldn’t even lift a finger now, embraced by the fatigue he met for the first time.

"Any regrets?" asked Daniel as he studied Cedrick’s face, but the latter simply smiled.

"Not a second," came out a weak yet unbending voice before he winced at the pain that struck his chest.

Then nothing. Darkness blanketed his eyes ever so slowly. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

Daniel gritted his teeth as he ripped his heart out of his chest. He gazed at Cedrick, only to see peace plastered across his opponent’s face.

"Azazel," he whispered with a shaking voice. "How... can you send your people to their death?"

His eyes flickered with building anger because one thing was for sure, Azazel had seen this coming. The child of evil was cunning and he must’ve calculated this far if their cover was spoiled.

Cedrick had fought for Azazel until the end and didn’t regret a thing about it. However, this peace on the face of the man in question told Daniel it was because Cedrick was created for the sole purpose of dying for Azazel.

And that... opened more questions for more mystery.

"This doesn’t sit well with me," he muttered, squeezing the beating heart in his hand to smithereens.

Daniel assisted himself up, standing on the side of Cedrick’s lifeless body. His forehead wrinkled, watching dark mist float from the tip of the latter’s fingertips as he slowly vanished.

"So he is truly someone who wasn’t naturally born, but created." He watched as the dark shroud ascend as Cedrick’s body looked more like a mirage disappearing.

"Hey! What the hell are you doing!?"

Daniel was snapped out of his thoughts as he twisted his neck to the other side of the vast expanse where he fought Cedrick. He lifted a brow, seeing Silas throw a huge fit, while Reks in a wolf’s form wrestled with Elizabeth in a wolf form.

All they saw next was Reks placing his head on top of Elizabeth’s neck and biting her like how a wolf would copulate.
