Tribal Sign-In: Immortal At The Start-Chapter 216: known Adventurer’s Saddening Backstory
Calvus sat down and asked, "So? Why are you in this dangerous forest?"
Rion’s expression darkened instantly, lowering his head, he mumbled, "I can’t tell you..."
Calvus frowned, and Jamie shouted from his spot, "What are you even worried about?" He continued with a smug expression, "Young master Calvus can save you from that lord of yours."
Rion’s head instantly shot towards Calvus, his hands gripped Calvus’s shoulders, and he murmured desperately while shaking him, "Is that true?! Can you really save us?!"
The knights instantly unsheathed their swords, and Jamie stated, "What are all of you doing?! Young master is trying to form a friendly bond with that guy! Lower your damn swords!!"
Salis looked at Jamie and said evenly, "And allow a commoner to touch the young master?"
Jamie growled. "A helpful and useful commoner! Use your brains!"
Turning his head towards Rion and Jamie, Salis muttered, "Knights do not weigh profit or possibility. We simply follow our duty."
Jamie fell silent at Salis’s words, and the other knights puffed their chests in pride.
Calvus, who was completely thrown off by Rion’s sudden excitement, waved his arms and muttered, "W-Wait! Calm down!"
Rion immediately let go of his shoulders and mumbled, "I-I am sorry!"
"It is fine," Calvus mumbled.
A faint smile appeared on his face, and he mumbled, "Nobody has ever manhandled me like that before..."
’What the fuck...?’ Rion cursed inwardly and thought, ’Blasted hell! Don’t tell me he enjoys people of his own sex...’
Chuckling to himself, Calvus stated, "I can only help you after listening to your answer."
Hearing his words, Rion’s expression hardened, and for the next few minutes he just stared at the yellowspint in his left hand.
As Calvus didn’t have much time, he placed a hand on Rion’s right shoulder and said, "You do not have to worry about anything... Think of it as if you are talking to a friend."
Rion nodded and began to explain with pained eyes, "My friends and I used to live in a distant small village... around five years ago, a wave of ether beasts made its way towards our poor village, and the village head sent us to the nearest town to ask for help."
Clenching his fist to the point of paling, he continued, "But it took us a week to reach the town and one more week to meet the lord..."
A faint smile appeared on his face. "The lord agreed to help us, so the next day the knights, my friends and I quickly made our way to the village."
Calvus’s expression turned sombre as he could already guess what he was about to say next.
Rion’s expression turned grim, tears gathered at the edge of his eyes, and he mumbled, "B-But we were too late... the village had already been ravaged by the beasts, and because of that, we had no other option than returning to the town with the knights..."
A furious glint passed through his eyes, and he continued, "After returning, we told everything to the lord." He turned his head towards Calvus and shouted, "And do you know what that fat bastard said?!"
"What...?" Calvus asked in a sombre tone.
Rion’s face contorted in fury, and he spat, "He said that if we want to live in his town, we have to pay him two silver!!"
"That’s all...?" Calvus mumbled, not understanding how that was an issue.
’For fucks sake!’ Rion’s mouth fell agape, and he said, "What do you mean, Calvus?! Two silver coins are enough for a month’s meals!"
"I-I see... what did you do then?" Calvus smartly changed the topic.
Rion sighed. "We didn’t have two silver coins, so the lord gave us another option... we just had to work for him for a year and in return, he would take care of our stay and meals..."
"Isn’t that a good deal?" Calvus questioned, and Rion answered with a nod, "It is, but considering the work that he gave us, the stay and the meals were subpar... he also didn’t allow us to talk or meet anyone and even if any of us fell ill, he only sent a doctor when it began to affect the work..."
Biting his lips, he growled with hate-seethed eyes, "But that wasn’t the worst, even after a year he didn’t allow us to leave!"
Calvus fell silent. His grip tightened around Rion’s shoulder, and he said, "It’s okay, Rion. You do not have to listen to that guy..."
Rion shook his head. Raising the yellowspint before Calvus’s face, he said, "Haha! Don’t worry about us! Lord has said that if we can get this herb for him, he would allow us to leave."
Calvus ignored the herb and asked in a genuinely worried tone, "Do you really believe that?"
Rion’s smile disappeared, his eyes lost their hopeful gleam, and he mumbled, "I... I don’t know..."
Lowering his head, he mumbled, "Even if this is a lie, we have nowhere else to go..."
Calvus turned his head towards Salis and Jamie.
The others were also able to hear Rion’s sad backstory. Jamie nudged Salis and said, "Do you still think that he is acting?"
Salis’s answer wasn’t instant.
He stared at Rion and Rion stared back at him, thinking, ’Just fall for it already!’
A few moments later, Salis said, "I do not believe everything, but I do not think that he is a threat."
’Good boy!’ Rion commented in his head.
The knights agreed to his words with a nod, and Jamie gave Calvus a thumbs-up.
Calvus looked at Rion with a calm smile and said, "For now, come with me to Barleyhen."
"Are you sure?" Rion mumbled.
Calvus nodded and said, "I am."
Rion’s expression turned grim, and he whispered, "But I don’t have anything to give you..."
Calvus pointed at the yellowspint and said, "Just give that herb to me, and I will take care of everything."
Rion stared at the yellowspint herb for a few moments before he handed it to Calvus and said, "I can only hope that you are not lying."
Calvus chuckled and stated, "Did you forget already? A noble does not lie, my friend." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
Right at that moment, a female’s voice reached them.
"Rion!"
’Jackpot!’
