Transmigration: Space-Aided Rise to Power and Prosperity-Chapter 340 - 176: Digging Dog Holes
Gu Chengyu stood in the courtyard and noticed an apricot tree growing very tall near the east wing.
Standing in the courtyard, the view was inevitably obstructed, so climbing the tree would offer a clearer sight. It seemed Ming Mo had indeed climbed the tree earlier.
With a light tap underfoot, Gu Chengyu found a branch to sit on. Indeed, the view from here was excellent, and he could also see the back of the west wing house.
The entire village had already fallen asleep; only the sound of insects chirping could be heard. The gentle night breeze made the moment rather enjoyable. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Gu Chengyu casually picked a book from the space, which introduced various local delicacies. His night vision meant reading in the tree was no problem, as the long night called for some entertainment.
The store had mobile phones, but they were all new with nothing inside them. Besides, in the nighttime, if someone waking up saw the phone’s bright light, wouldn’t that scare them to death?
Mrs. Tian and Gouwa gently opened the door and then sneaked out of the house, slowly closing the door behind them.
Gu Chengyu’s ears twitched; with his keen hearing, there was no way he wouldn’t hear the sound of the door opening or footsteps. And it sounded like more than just one person?
He quietly parted the lush branches on the tree and looked into the courtyard. It was the couple from the east wing, sneaking their way into the courtyard.
Gu Chengyu became serious; if they were going to the toilet, they wouldn’t need to be so cautious, and they didn’t bring an oil lamp. Moreover, at one’s own house, one person is enough for a toilet visit, right? He wanted to see what they were up to.
Mrs. Tian pulled Gouwa toward the left side of the west wing; the carriage was parked in the courtyard. The two compartments were stuffed full. Gu Chengyu had bought specialties from the Capital, including fabrics for Gu Wan, which took up considerable space. As for the jewelry, Ming Mo and the others had already taken them inside.
Actually, Gu Chengyu intended to store them in the space, but he was never alone, and it would be suspicious to take them out of the space at home. How would he explain that?
Seeing them sneaking towards the carriage, Gu Chengyu knew the couple was eyeing their valuables. Didn’t expect the village head to seem righteous, yet his son and daughter-in-law were no good.
They hadn’t touched the items yet; catching a thief requires catching them red-handed. He decided to wait for them to steal the items before confronting them. If too early, they could deny and claim they were just going to the toilet, which would be unclear.
Despite it being midnight, the moonlight clearly illuminated the ground, though not much could be seen. At least, they didn’t know what was in the carriage. Mrs. Tian lifted the carriage curtain; it was pitch black inside. As she reached in randomly, there were so many things that she couldn’t tell what they were.
She could only gesture to Gouwa to go inside and fetch the oil lamp. She planned to hide inside the carriage with the lamp, where the outside wouldn’t see the light. She would select items while Gouwa took them outside and hid them before dawn.
After gesturing for a while, who knows if Gouwa understood, but Gouwa turned around and left.
Gu Chengyu was amused by their efforts.
Yet, Gouwa didn’t go to the east wing for the oil lamp; his mind was focused on the west wing.
Gu Chengyu found it odd; this wasn’t the way to the east wing!
Gouwa didn’t head directly to the west wing but cautiously bypassed the front, directly heading to the back. Gouwa knew there was a hole in the back of the west wing, left from when a dog was kept there to protect the nearby mountainous area from wild animals. The dog had died, and the hole hadn’t been filled in.
The hole was usually covered with a pile of dry wood. His small frame meant he could squeeze through.
Gu Chengyu couldn’t see the dog hole; he found it odd that despite not obtaining anything, his wife sent him for an oil lamp, and yet he was heading to the back of the west wing.
Gu Chengyu found it strange, so he tapped the ground lightly, flying onto the roof of the west wing. Looking down, he saw Gouwa crouching by a pile of firewood doing something unknown.
Gu Chengyu observed; it seemed he was digging something out. Turning around, he saw Mrs. Tian still waiting in the same place.
Suddenly, he remembered Gouwa’s gaze toward Yao Mengxian and the others earlier; could he be digging the hole? The house was built of mud bricks, and if a hole existed, it would only grow larger. Was he planning to sneak into the west wing?
Gu Chengyu felt speechless; he truly was bold with lust. There were four women in the house; even if he sneaked in, he wouldn’t get anywhere. Just one shout and people would immediately come; wasn’t he brainless or was he overwhelmed by lust?
Gu Chengyu expected them to be focused on valuables, not to act against Miss Yao and the others.
Gouwa had indeed considered such things, assuming Gu Chengyu and the others had eloped. Even if discovered, they wouldn’t dare make a fuss, or their whereabouts would be exposed. Report to the government?
Moreover, in the middle of the night, if a man is found in a girl’s room, nobody would believe the girl was innocent, right? He could say whatever he wanted. Three young girls inside, he could take his pick, right?
His demands weren’t high; he just wanted a maid. That older maid was quite nice-looking.
Later, the master, to protect his reputation, would likely give him that maid. Gouwa was delighted by the thought, and dug more energetically.
Despite his small build, the dog hole wasn’t very large. He widened the hole to avoid getting stuck inside, which would be helpless.
Gu Chengyu guessed his intentions and certainly had to stop him. With a thought, he came up with a plan.
He flew down and kicked Gouwa on his backside.
"Ouch!" Gouwa cried out as he was kicked, not just in pain, but in surprise. He thought his wife had found him and quickly turned around.
In the moonlight, a cold gleam flashed, "Ah!"
As Gouwa screamed, Gu Chengyu grabbed him and tossed him into the courtyard, then swiftly returned to the branches above. Coldly, he watched Gouwa roll on the ground; without the troublesome item, people might behave.
Mrs. Tian had been waiting for Gouwa with the oil lamp, but he didn’t come; she decided to grab a couple of items to check inside.
Unexpectedly, before acting, she heard a "plop" from the courtyard, like something fell from the sky.
Then Gouwa’s wailing echoed, startling Mrs. Tian. Listening closely, wasn’t this voice her husband’s?
What disaster, shouting so loudly! Trying to let everyone know? She dared not take anything, quickly heading toward Gouwa.
The village head and his wife were fast asleep, only to be awakened by Gouwa’s cries in the courtyard, suddenly losing all sleep.
The village head instructed his wife to light the oil lamp, swiftly opening the door to enter the courtyard.
