Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Today we’re making baskets(1)

Ningning stared at the numbers hovering in front of her.

Forty hours.

Sixteen.

Sixteen.

She blinked once.

Then again.

"...You know." she said slowly, "I was a fourth-year chemical engineering student."

[That’s irrelevant.]

....

"No, very relevant," Ningning replied, tapping the air where the numbers floated. "Do you have any idea how much math I’ve survived?"

[Elaborate. I thought little dumpling only thought about men?.]

She snorted. "Partial differential equations. Multivariable calculus. Reaction kinetics that made grown men cry. I’ve modeled pressure drops through porous media and solved mass balances that spanned three chalkboards."

She crossed her arms. "Simple time redistribution isn’t the problem."

[Then what is?]

"The fact that you shaved eight hours off the two tasks that already have ninety and one hundred and one percent difficulty," she said flatly. "That’s not math. That’s attempted murder."

There was a brief pause.

[Your tone suggests dissatisfaction.]

"You don’t say."

The screen flickered, then stabilized.

[The adjustment is fair. Task One requires travel outside tribal territory. Task Two and Three are dependent on proximity and interaction density. Shortened time increases efficiency.]

Ningning closed the world book with a dull thud placing back into the space and pressed her fingers to her forehead.

"Efficiency," she muttered. "Of course."

She glanced back toward Weijie, who was finally stirring, his eyes half-open as he adjusted to the empty space where she had been.

His gaze found her almost immediately.

Their eyes met.

She smiled slightly as she walked to where he was.

"Good morning. Did you sleep well.."

Weijie’s eyes were on Ningning briefly before he turned to the door.

That person he saw at night, he hadn’t seen those pair of eyes before.

This cave was no longer safe, he would have to put up some barriers.

"I slept well. Did you? You were cold." He said as she shifted back to his human form, standing up.

"I did. Thanks, to you."

Weijie smiled as he walked close enough to touch her head gently and give her a soft kiss on her forehead.

Ningning face reddened as she turned away, Weijie’s gestures always caught her off guard.

"So what shall we do today. I was thinking we’d—" before she could finish her words, she heard a knock.

She turned the see Xiaoli standing at the entrance.

"Xiaoli. Good morning, what are you doing here?"

Xiaoli bowed at Weijie slightly as she as walked in.

Standing just after the entrance.

"Today. We’re making baskets, so I’m here to bring you along. It’s crucial you meet the other women, they must be curious to meet you as well.."

Ningning stroked her chin as if she was in deep thoughts but in reality she was smiling inwardly.

The perfect opportunity to complete her second task had appeared on her doorsteps.

"I’d love too. But can you give me a moment to get ready?"

Xiaoli nodded as she turned away. "I will be outside.."

Ningning turned back to Weijie once Xiaoli stepped outside.

"Is it okay if I go with her?" she asked.

"She said they’re making baskets."

Weijie did not hesitate. He nodded, his expression easing. "It’s good for you to go. You’ll learn how things are done here, and you should talk to the other females. They’ll want to know you."

He paused, then added more quietly, "Just be careful. If it gets late, don’t wander back alone. Wait. I’ll come for you."

Something warm settled in her chest at that.

"I will.." she said, smiling.

She turned to protrusions in the wall, the clothes she had hanged overnight had somehow dried.

The cold at night must be something else.

She rinsed her face with cool water, splashed her mouth clean, then ran her fingers through her hair until it fell into place.

It would be weird to bring the mirror out in front of Weijie.

But she knew she looked good.

"Alright." She straightened and exhaled.

She walked to Weijie as she held his hand. "I’ll be back soon.."

Weijie nodded as he watched her leave. He was actually glad she was leaving, he had things to do.

"These tasks of yours," Ningning said under her breath, "they better come with rewards that actually match the difficulty."

[They do.]

She stopped walking. "Then tell me."

There was a pause, dramatic in a way only Doudou ever managed.

[Rewards are aligned with environmental deficiency.]

That caught her attention.

[You are in a prehistoric ecosystem. You lack tools, structured knowledge, and scalable survival methods.]

A new screen unfolded before her,

[Task One Reward:Medicinal Codex Fragment]

Ningning’s gaze sharpened.

[This fragment contains structured knowledge on primitive medicine. Herb identification principles, preparation methods, dosage estimation without measurement tools, and toxicity indicators.]

Not it wasnt just Silvervein.

It was a whole system for medicine.

Her fingers curled slightly.

"...That’s more like it."

[Task Two Reward: Primitive Craft and Resource Manual]

Images surfaced in her mind.

Storage pits.

Preserved food.

Treated fibers.

[This knowledge covers basket weaving efficiency, food preservation techniques, hide curing, cordage strength testing, and long-term storage methods.]

Ningning exhaled slowly.

That alone could change how a tribe survived winter.

[Task Three Reward: Primitive Arsenal Codex — Tier One Access]

She stiffened.

"...Weapon knowledge?"

[Correct.]

The screen darkened slightly, the tone shifting.

[This codex does not provide weapons.]

She frowned. "Is it a guide on how to create the weapons itself?"

[Correct. Look at you using your brain!]

-_-

Her heart picked up. Not because she’d get instant weapons, but because the knowledge itself unfolded in her mind.

She could see it: the shaping of stone and bone, how to sharpen and balance spears and knives, the tension of a bowstring, the flight and impact of arrows. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Axes shaped from heavy stone, wooden mallets hardened by fire, designs for tools that wouldn’t break mid-use.

Every weapon type she could make without iron, every tool that could change survival odds, all detailed in instinctive understanding, not just instruction.

She exhaled slowly, a tight smile forming. For the first time, she felt she had a tangible advantage in this world, a way to shape it, protect herself, and survive.

"...Finally." she murmured. "Something that actually makes sense."

[Failure will result in forfeiture.]
