Chapter 79: Chapter 79: Faith and Fear

"Everything’s going to be fine."

Atop one of the buildings in the Greyson residence, Mistress Aria muttered, her gaze piercing the night sky as she bathed in the moonlight, her silver hair trailing freely in the wind.

Even after all this time, she could still remember those words. Muttered to her when she was just a girl on the streets, one rainy night as she was broken and battered, with no outlook on life.

The warmth in those piercing dark eyes that gave so much meaning to the words. The ones that anchored her back from the brink of death and gave purpose to her life.

Inhaling sharply, she took a moment to relish the compassion that had turned her into the woman she was. Perhaps that was why she had become a healer — to nurture life rather than take it.

And for a fleeting moment, she had seen that look of compassion, eerily similar to the one Greyson had cast at her, in the dark-robed figure. She had seen how the little children had looked up to him in hope rather than fear.

And in that moment, she had understood. He wasn’t just another monstrously talented anomaly or merely a power-hungry maniac. He was something else. Something better.

He had the makings of a great lord. She was starting to see what Greyson saw in him. She could envision a flourishing future with the dark-robed figure at the top.

But even with all this, one thought worried her. Was his power enough to sustain all this? To go against the whole city was no easy feat. Did he truly have the power to back his words?

Just as the thought formed, a figure blurred before her sight before vanishing into the shadows in the distance.

She stared blankly for a moment before a faint smile traced across her lips.

"He seeks more power?"

She could recognize where he was heading. The Red Streaks... or what remained of it. Where the E-rank dungeon had been discovered.

Sighing softly, her gaze slowly lifted upward, understanding a bit of his thought process.

Pity she wouldn’t be there to watch him scale up like back in the Wolf Den dungeon, leaving her only with wonder and insatiable curiosity.

His body already reeked of strength. What about when he came back?

Would it be enough? She mused before sighing quietly. Only time would tell.

"That’s enough. We’re leaving tonight!"

In another room inside the Greyson residence, Cedric snapped, his face red, almost choking with fear and rage as he stared at Lady Valeria.

Even after everything he had told her about Ulric, she had still gone ahead and ordered a hit from the Sisters of Death.

With no contact from them, and Ulric still walking around just fine, it could only mean one thing. They had failed. And soon, he would be coming for them. Or Lady Valeria, to be specific.

But that hardly mattered now.

"You worry too much," Valeria snorted. She could have ordered the Sisters of Death to stop midway when Cedric informed her of Ulric’s supposed monstrosity. But she didn’t, all because of one thing, as she muttered coldly.

"The old fool should have told him of my background before he died. If he so much as lays a finger on me, it shall invoke the whole wrath of my clan," she muttered before finishing, "He wouldn’t dare."

He wouldn’t dare!? Cedric yelled mentally as her words replayed repeatedly in the back of his mind. Was he the only rational one here? Was she so drunk on her grand illusions that she couldn’t see the truth right in front of her this whole time?

The bastard was already crazy, bold enough to challenge the whole city. What was one more clan on the list?

Whatever the case, he wouldn’t be here to find out, as he cast a pitiful glance at his mother and sisters beside her, who remained adamant.

Looking back, he couldn’t help but shake his head slowly in regret. Valeria’s vile hatred of Greyson and Ulric had poisoned his mind ever since he was young, which in turn caused it to spill out as irrational hatred for Ulric.

Now that he was finally snapping out of it, as clarity washed over his mind, it was too late.

Giving Lady Valeria one last look, he breathed.

"There’s nothing left for me here. I’m leaving," he muttered, a fiery glint rekindling in his eyes.

He was an A-rank talent. Hopefully, a powerful force would take him in. Ulric’s power had opened his eyes, and now he wanted to live the rest of his life chasing that power.

Hearing his words, Lady Valeria shrieked madly, trying to stop him. He was the only inkling she had of a great future. She couldn’t let him leave.

But despite everything she said, it was meaningless, as Cedric had already made up his mind.

As he stepped into the night, he looked into the sky, a faint smile stretching across his lips as he muttered to himself,

"A new beginning."

Unaware of all the events unfolding simultaneously, Ulric sprinted under the night sky, feeling the breeze rush across him, fluttering his hair wildly.

Almost giving him the illusion of freedom. The freedom he sought as he acquired absolute strength in order to do whatever he wanted.

Elsewhere in the distance, the perverted chuckles of an old man echoed in the nightly breeze.

"Not that you asked, but I went to this tavern the other night. Haha, you should have seen the massive breasts the mistress had. Ohh, and her feet. They were godly. I begged her so I could lick them, but she refused..."

Just as he was about to say more, the rest of his words got stuck in his throat as a new presence suddenly emerged from the shadows.

"Y-young lord... I mean... L-lord... what are you doing back here so soon?"

Shaking his head slightly, Ulric ignored the question as he made his way toward the shimmering blue portal he had tasked the two elders to guard.

Watching as he slowly approached it, their eyes couldn’t help but widen slightly.

He wasn’t thinking of challenging the E-rank Goblin Demon dungeon... and alone at that.

"Shouldn’t you go in with a team to assure your safety?" the other elder muttered.

Before he was silenced as Ulric huffed,

"I don’t need one."

Before they could say anything else, Ulric stepped in, sinking into the portal, leaving the two guards staring blankly.
