Chapter 43- The Rise (Part 1)

Rein used the last rune and checked the skill.

[Name: Energy Pulse]

[Rank: S]

[Type: Active]

[Level 1]

[Description: You are able to condense energy within a single point of your body and unleash it in one second as an energy attack that deals devastating damage. Requires Life Essence to activate.]

"Hmmm, this one is quite interesting." Rein rubbed his chin as he read the description. ’It reminds me of Fortified Fist, but it sounds way more versatile and stronger. It would also fit perfectly with the amount of Life Essence I have. If I condense energy anywhere I want and unleash it... That would definitely deal a deadly blow.’

Rein could already see how he could use it with Fortified Fist and his sword to create a brutal arsenal of weapons almost impossible to predict or counter properly. Each skill complemented the other and gave him an advantage in any fight he got into.

So, without hesitation, Rein learned the ability as the knowledge seeped into his mind. He sucked a small breath before he looked at Violet; his eyes seemed a bit different.

"We are ready now." He said.

"..." Violet nodded her head as she tried to hide the worry in her eyes. She didn’t know what awaited them there. They could very much face a great threat that would put their lives at risk.

"Hey." Rein looked at her. "Look at me." He said.

"..."

"Your family will be fine. I will make sure of it." Rein said with a calm look on his face. "He won’t be able to do anything. I promise you."

Violet stared deep into Rein’s eyes. She felt hypnotized by them, almost as if he cast a magic spell on her that made her brain stop thinking for a few moments. All she could see was endless confidence... As if Rein knew exactly what to do, and that was always something Rein made her feel.

Rein always knew what to do, even in dire situations. He was always calm and ready, and that not only made her job way easier since Rein would always do the right thing... But it always gave her hope.

It always calmed her down when she felt most worried. He always assured her and pulled her with him when she needed him the most. Those eyes saved her more times than she could count.

’Those eyes will never change. I don’t want them to ever change.’ She thought to herself as she nodded faintly.

"Mhm, I know. Let’s do this... together." She said.

The two stared at each other for a few seconds in silence. The rain and thunder in the background became a distant noise.

Then...

"AAAAAAAH! Someone, save me!"

Suddenly, they heard a loud scream coming from nearby. Rein looked up quickly as he summoned his sword.

"That voice..." Rein squinted his eyes as he rushed out of the alley and looked to the side. There, stuck in a corner, was Teo... surrounded by several Undead.

"Please!!! Move away!!" He yelled.

"RAAAA!!!" The Undead grabbed him, ready to bite and eat his flesh. Rein quickly rushed in, and with a swift move, he sliced their heads off before they could even realise he was there.

"Hah... Hah... Hah..." Teo looked up in shock as blood splashed all over his face. He looked like a terrified chicken. "M-Mr X... I-Is that you?"

"Who else would it be? I’m surprised to see that you’re still alive." Rein said as he kicked a corpse out of the way.

However, he didn’t expect what would happen next. Tears suddenly welled up in Teo’s eyes as he lunged at Rein.

"Mr X!!! AAAAAH! I thought I was going to die!!" He cried. "I... I... I was so terrified! I didn’t think I would survive this night!"

"..." Rein looked down at him with a blank expression. "What happened?"

"Teo! Is that you?" Violet arrived a second later.

"Miss Violet! I’m so glad you’re safe! I was so worried about you guys!"

"You ran away so fast. I couldn’t even look for you, Teo. Where did you even go?" Violet asked.

"*Sniff... After that giant bear appeared... I... I was so terrified, so I ran away without even realizing. Then... When I tried to come back, you were all gone... I didn’t know what to do! I was so terrified! Then, then... Undead found me, and I had to run for my life..."

"That sounds so awful. You’ve been through so much, Teo." Violet said as she held her mouth.

"But I was lucky to meet a nice group of people who helped me."

"Group of people? Survivors?" Violet asked. "Hm? Where are they?"

"Two of them were actually Mr Marco and Miss Kara. After they left the base, they roamed around till they found that group they said..."

"Marco and Kara?" Violet raised an eyebrow. "That sounds..."

"Wait." Rein suddenly stopped Violet as he looked at Teo. "Did these people tell you anything?" He asked.

"Hm? No, they just asked me where Miss Violet went. I was so surprised at first, but yeah, they seemed to be looking for you."

"..." Rein’s eyes slowly widened as he slowly retracted his hand from Teo. It was as if realization struck him out of nowhere. ’Don’t tell me...’

"Was the person who asked you that question a friendly man with a nice smile?" Rein asked as he tried to keep his voice calm. "Someone with a comforting presence?"

"Hmm? Now that you mention it, yeah... There was this nice man amongst them... I think he introduced himself as... Virgo? Yes, that’s his name."

"..."

"..."

Rein and Violet froze in place, completely blank. Their faces were so shocked, it almost appeared comical.

"Hm? What? Is everything ok?" Teo asked when he noticed the weird looks that appeared on their faces.

"..."

Rein then slowly bent his head down as he rubbed his face. "You have got to be kidding me..."

"Teo... You..."

"What? What is going on? I’m so confused."

"You’re a fucking idiot, that’s what’s going on." Rein replied coldly. ’Of all people to lead them to our location, it’s this idiot?’ Rein asked himself. ’Fate could’ve not made it any funnier.’
