Chapter 111: 111 Another Mission.

After parting with Rika, Cain returned to his dorm room and sank into his chair. In the corner, the golden light from the artificial sun filtered through the translucent window beside him, giving life to the cold, bleak room.

He inhaled deeply, his gaze soon dropped into the tiny display in his hand. The boy exhaled, washing away the tension coiled in his limbs.

"Let’s go!"

Steeling himself, Cain took the terminal from his desk and booted it up. Its black screen lit up, displaying a simple menu with only one app folder that contained his profile.

Previously, any books he borrowed would have been automatically deleted. But now things had changed as he received the permit from Dosh, and the book would stay in his terminal for as long as he wanted.

With a swipe from his finger, Cain began to transfer the book into the terminal. The reason was that it had a bigger display, so it wouldn’t hurt his eyes.

One by one, book icons populated the menu screen, sparking a thrill of anticipation. Cain blinked, ensuring that all the books had been moved, then straight to tap the manual book of martial arts kenjutsu.

Before he touched the books related to geography or knowledge about the civilizations besides the place he currently lived in. Cain chose the martial art first to increase his fighting power.

There was no deep meaning behind it; he just followed his instinct because with the abilities Cain possessed, he could absorb the knowledge in a blink.

The screen began to change, showing a plain green cover for a book titled "Basic Kenjutsu Technique Chapter One."

When he read the title, dread washed over the blood on his face.

"What the hell?"

Cain held his breath and began swiping the screen to see the next page. Each page he swiped, detailing how to properly train, complete with illustrations.

The images were rough, written by a human hand. But they gave the book aesthetic value compared to one that showed only a description.

He skipped through the pages like a madman until he made it to the end. The boy shrugged and leaned back in his seat, letting the soft cushion embrace his stiff back.

"Damn it, I forgot to ask how many Chapters there are about the kenjutsu manual."

A fragment of the memories he had interacted with the librarians resurfaced. At that time, he’d only asked for the book, not specifying which volume he wanted to read.

’Wait, why am I to blame? Shouldn’t the librarian have clarified which volume I was checking out?’

The grey-haired boy shook his head, not wanting to dig deeper into the problem that would make him run around in circles, and he couldn’t make any progress.

Instead, he returned to the first page and activated his abilities.

’Scan Protocol.’

Cain’s black pupils flashed into blue, and in the corner of his vision, a blue panel started to emerge.

[Scan Protocol activated.]

[Scanning the Information... Basic Technique of Kenjutsu Chapter One. ...Scan Complete.]

[Decompressing it into Data!]

[Data successfully saved.]

[Would you like Data Reconstruction to absorb it into your brain? Y/N]

With his thought alone, the blue panel hovering before him flickered before it changed into a blinding light that shot into his forehead.

[Copying complete.]

As the data stream invaded his brain, Cain’s expression contorted in agony. He grabbed his throbbing head, watching the data he obtained merge into something that had been added long ago.

[Two identical data sets will be merged.]

[Merging in process... 1% 17%... Complete]

[Your understanding of Kenjutsu rises.]

...

"Aarkh!"

Cain groaned, unaware that the system began to move without his will. A moment later, he snapped his eyes wide and noticed several messages from his system.

[Kenjutsu data proficiency up!]

[Advance > Master]

"What?"

His voice echoed within the empty room. He gulped, watching as the technique he had learned only for months jumped to a level of master-rank.

’Are you kidding me!?’

The boy stared at the blue panel that blocked his sight. Drove by his instinct, Cain closed his eyes and dived into his own subconsciousness.

In his darkened vision, a vivid video on how to move his body and use the katana began to change.

The images ingrained in his body after he absorbed them from the chip began to split. Each represented the move his body remembered.

Then thousands of letters were jumbled and began to fill each section of the moves, completing the data he had.

His eyelids fluttered open, and Cain managed to analyze what was happening inside him.

"So basically the chip gave me an experience, and the book gave me a detailed description. Huff, ...That’s insanely good."

Alone in his room, Cain laughed at the enlightenment he received. Never in his wildest dreams did he think that reading the basic manual of a martial arts book could elevate him higher. He looked at the terminal in his hand and muttered.

"That’s right, everything starts with the basics, and will return to the basics. Hehe, pretty cool."

The boy giggled, unknowingly quoting those words from the last page of the book he had read earlier.

After catching his breath, Cain continued to copy all the information he obtained from the library. Next was the firearms manual book.

Inside it was a complete guide to mastering its use, prompting him to fight at close to mid-range in battle. There was also a detailed description on how to assemble and create the pistol down to the tiniest parts.

[Copying complete.]

[Two identical data sets will be merged.]

Again, he had to clutch his head, feeling the heat start to scorch his brain nerves every time the merging happened.

However, it was all worth it because the next panel showed an upgrade to his basic firearm that had remained stagnant since he obtained it.

[Firearms data proficiency up!]

[Beginner > Advance]

"Good, good."

Cain, who couldn’t contain the overflowing joy in his heart, started to read another book. His blue pupils kept scanning the entire words and copied the information planted in the book.

Time passed as he succeeded in copying the information regarding the map and geographical knowledge. ’Drip. ’ Something warm and wet landed on his arm. He stared at the thick crimson bead on his skin. A beat later, he could taste coppery tang touching his dry lips.

’Blood!?’

He blinked several times, still oblivious to what had happened to his body. The boy used the back of his palm to wipe the nosebleed.

Seeing the red stain on his skin, his strength began to fade. Cain exhaled a long breath and accidentally spurted some blood splattered on the desk.

"Damn it," he muttered, staring at the red spray. "I’ll clean that later."

The grey-haired boy was so absorbed in copying the information that he forgot the burden it placed on his brain. When he was aware, a jolt of searing heat began to scorch the nerves around his brain, causing him to screw his eyes shut in pain.

A loud ’clatter’ resounded from the narrow space, coming from the dropped terminal. Cain had no leeway to care about it as he bit his lips, enduring the agony that burned his consciousness to ash.

Several minutes that felt like hours had passed, Cain still clutching his skull, feeling a dull ache as if a fist was pounding his head.

In the midst of this swirling agony, his left wrist trembled. The notification prompted him to glance to the side and look at the tiny display, where he saw an incoming message.

’Tch, who is it?’

Cain reluctantly tapped the screen. The message was from Dosh. He read the content slowly, but frowned upon completing it.

"Those senior b*stards!"

He spat. Blood spurted along his breath. The boy straightened his posture, his head still pounding. Cain was about to reach his teammates, but the anger consumed him as he slammed his fist against the desk, producing a loud ’bamm’ in the room.

The message from Dosh was: {...Cain, I’m sorry to have to bring you this news. But can you come to the arena with your group? I have a new mission for you.}
