Chapter 164: The Barbarian Massacre [ 2 ]

"Yes?"

The woman glanced up at me and met my gaze.

She seemed a little unsettled and nervous, but after mustering up the courage, she said:

"You look like a noble, so... Could you please spare me some healing potions?"

"What for?"

She flinched.

"My village is sick... Their skin is peeling off, and they can’t control their energy."

Oh?

I don’t remember there being any mention of this in the game.

A plague, maybe?

"I don’t think a healing potion would cure something like that."

My blood might.

"So could you show me to your village? I’m a little curious."

I didn’t want to linger here for too long, since Clementine’s probably waiting for me.

So I’ll make it quick.

The elf woman stared at me for a moment, then slowly nodded.

Once she turned around and gestured for me to follow her, I saw a few red spots on her forearm.

Even so, I didn’t say a word as I began following her through the plains.

She wasn’t very fast, and if I had to guess, she was around Grade 4 or 5.

Basically, a regular human.

Because of that, it took us nearly half an hour of running to finally see the outline of a village.

Again, since they’re only barbarians in name, there were a bunch of brick and wooden houses.

Some stables, training grounds, bars, and more.

It was just like the rest of the continent.

Except these people were a little more focused on training than fashion.

Though, right as I was about to enter the village, I stopped, smelling something off.

It was the smell of rotten corpses, and since I realized it was coming from my right, I exchanged a glance with the woman and approached the smell.

Following along the village’s wall, I eventually arrived at a graveyard.

Or... I wish I could call it a graveyard.

Instead, it was a giant hole filled with rotten and blackened corpses.

Just then, I saw two people approach from the distance, dragging along another corpse, until finally tossing it inside the hole.

CRACK!

"..."

"I’m sorry about the sight."

I turned to the woman and nodded.

"It’s fine. How long has this been going on?"

"Almost two months," she replied.

Two months, huh?

Yeah.

I definitely don’t remember anything like this happening in the game.

"Why haven’t you visited the Divine Healer?"

The woman lowered her head.

"I don’t have the energy to travel that far. Also, the people of Hanazora hate us barbarians. They’d capture an elf like me and sell me off."

That makes sense...

"I guess just take me to where all the patients are being held."

She nodded and did just that, leading me into the village.

Everywhere I looked, I saw malnourished barbarians, and some whose expressions were so pale it looked like they’d die at any moment.

But among these people, there were also some who looked perfectly fine and healthy.

These were the same people who seemed to be running around and taking care of the sick.

Honestly? Their numbers weren’t half bad either.

I’d say over 60% of the people here weren’t sick.

And that’s a really big number.

Even so, we eventually arrived in front of the pharmacy, and when the woman opened the door, I spotted a room full of people who were literally on the brink of death, their skin completely peeled off.

It was a gruesome sight, to say the least.

"Do you have any idea how this could’ve started?"

"It just kind of happened. Oh! But our chieftain suspects it’s something in the food supplies we were given a couple months ago."

Come on...

"No offense, but if someone you don’t know gives you food, don’t you think you should probably not accept it?"

Her brows twitched.

"If the Holy Order donated food to you, you’re telling me you wouldn’t accept?"

The Holy Order?

Why would they even go near the barbarians?

There’s no reason to.

But at the same time... she’s right.

An organization like that wouldn’t do something this evil.

That much, I was sure of.

"The priests from all the churches visited us and filled our food reserves for nearly half a year. We were blessed for a bit, until..."

Hold on.

"The priests directly accompanied the food caravan?"

"Yes?"

I narrowed my eyes. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

"Were there any priests from the Harper Citadel?"

She nodded right away.

"Yes, there were a lot of priests from there. Even two Arch Priests accompanied them."

"..."

That makes a lot more sense, then.

The odds of the Harper Citadel priests poisoning the food were high.

After all, the majority of them were corrupt.

So food and poison...

What are the odds the poison isn’t actually poison?

"Could you leave me alone for a bit? I’d like to inspect these people a little more closely."

She flinched again and glanced at my horns, clearly not trusting me since I was a demon.

But her helplessness really didn’t give her much of a choice, as she took a deep breath and left the pharmacy, tightly shutting the doors so no one could leave or enter.

I waited for a few seconds, and once I felt like she was far enough away, I poured some energy into the raven symbol inside my heart and manifested Morr.

[What’s the matter this time?]

"Don’t act like you haven’t been watching."

The raven sighed and landed on my shoulder.

[I have. But this seems like something you can figure out by yourself, so why call me?]

"Why not? Think of it as a bond-building exercise."

Chuckling, I approached one of the semi-conscious patients and sat down beside them.

Morr hopped off my shoulder and landed on the sick patient.

I was expecting Morr to say something sassy, but instead...

[Hmm...]

[So for starters, it’s definitely not poison. At least, it’s not any poison I’ve ever seen in my life.]

"This isn’t poison?"

It was hard for me to imagine what it could be if not poison.

And as if understanding that, the raven pointed at the patient’s heart.

[Have a look for yourself.]

I paused for a moment, then let out a sigh and used my Mystic Eyes of Perception to glance at the patient in front of me.

Yet when I stared directly into their heart, I saw something I wasn’t expecting at all.

"...An empty demonic core?"
