"Fuck," Zylus realized it too late, everyone there stood, awakened by the sudden disturbance. "I knew there was more to Noctis than he let on."

"So Noctis left and took all our supplies," Eldra paused, breathing slowly, "Do you know if he took something else?"

They looked around and then noticed something; it was Fred. He’s missing.

"What could Noctis possibly need Fred for?" Zylus asked, "And that leaves me with the question, is Noctis working with Lucas?"

"I’m not sure, and I don’t know why I care so much," Eldra said, worried about her brother, "But we have to save my brother, he’s family, just like you taught me, Zylus."

Zylus looked around, "This bitch didn’t even leave a trail behind, so following him is a no-go."

"It’s as you say, not a trace left by him." Eldra accepted, "So what do you plan on doing?" She asked.

"For now, let me take some time to study my technique." Zylus decided, "There’s nothing else we could do; if we were to walk around like mindless chickens, then we would be falling for their tricks."

Eldra nodded, then sat back down beside the fire as Zylus started to open his Human system.

"Hey, Eldra," Zylus focused his gaze on her, "How do you guys unlock new orders and techniques?" he asked.

Zylus was aware it was by a contractual process, but since they didn’t have a system, he was curious where they went to initiate it.

"The academy’s head decides when we’re prepared. The larger the conviction we hold, the safer it is for us to sign. If you go in headfirst, there are cases of humans losing some crucial features." Eldra stated with a slightly dry tone.

"Like what?" Zylus asked curiously.

"Well, not that they lose it..." She paused, "But it’s the fact they slowly turn into Spirits."

Zylus hadn’t realized the major consequences humans must go through to gain more power, but if it was what it would take to seek revenge, he was more than willing to accept it.

"I see..." Zylus said, preparing to click on the acceptance of the contract, "My conviction is enough, so I shouldn’t lose anything."

Eldra nodded at him as if she knew he was prepared, "By the way you look, you seem prepared."

"Glad you know." Zylus confidently said as he began lying down on the floor beside Eldra.

He put two hands behind his head, using them as a pillow, and then one leg over the other, in a curious manner.

"Let’s see here," Zylus said as Eldra turned her back. "Alright, bet, it’s time."

Before he continued, he wanted to test something out now.

"Oh, I see," Zylus looked at his human system, and it didn’t disappear, but the other Demonic System he had was still deactivated. "So I can activate whichever system I want out at will."

Up until now, Zylus believed he had to use the relic to conceal his presence, but not anymore. Now he can switch between systems by simply calling the race he wants to be at that moment; he now feels different.

Zylus then thought about his relic, "I don’t need this little thing anymore. Time to hibernate in my inventory, little thing." He paused, thinking about Clara, "Hey, you there?"

No answer, nothing.

"She’s probably asleep," Zylus whispered, "Time I get back to this, though."

Zylus then felt it first in his chest. Pressure, as he had committed an unforgivable act.

As if something had reached inside him and wrapped itself around his heart, squeezing just enough to remind him it was there.

"Z-Zylus?" Eldra’s voice tensed as she turned around.

The fire beside them flickered violently, its flames stretching toward him unnaturally.

His vision darkened. Then suddenly, he wasn’t lying on the ground anymore. He stood ankle deep in blood...

His blood.

Somebody’s face flashed before him, but he couldn’t tell who it was exactly.

"You seek power," a voice whispered, not from above, but from within his veins. "What are you willing to stop being to achieve it?"

Zylus clenched his fists; he was ready.

"If losing myself is the price," he muttered, "then I’ll decide how much!"

The blood beneath his feet surged upward.

His palm split open without a wound, blood floating midair, forming jagged symbols that burned into his skin rather than resting on it. Eldra stood frozen; she felt that Zylus’s presence was changing.

The symbols collapsed into his veins as they disappeared. Zylus screamed, the feeling as if something was changing within him, in a rapid amount of time.

"Ahhh!" The pressure continued until silence finally came.

Zylus exhaled sharply, his breath fogging the air despite the fire.

Eldra stared at him, "Zylus," she whispered, "What happened?"

He slowly sat up, eyes glowing faintly red before dimming, "Oh, absolutely nothing," Zylus replied sarcastically.

"Okay!" Eldra didn’t want to bother him anymore, so she accepted the answer Zylus gave.

"Hey Eldra," Zylus whispered, "I’ve come up with an idea."

"An idea for what?" She asked.

"I have a plan to finally catch up with them, and take what we deserve back..." Zylus paused, "And of course, saving your brother."

Eldra’s gaze darkened. "Let’s go," she stood up and started to follow Zylus.

Zylus understood that he had to watch Fred die... only him, no one else.

His strength was getting too great, one that might end up in the wrong hands.

"I’m saving someone just to kill them off," Zylus whispered, "What a gamble this is."
