Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 76: I’ll Take Responsibility!
"What are you saying, child?" Hannah Hayes looked at her disapprovingly. "In any marriage, there are bound to be ups and downs. Don’t always talk about divorce; it damages the relationship."
"I meant if."
"If you were to divorce him, it would definitely be his fault." Hannah Hayes continued calmly, "If he dares to bully my daughter, he should be skinned alive at the very least!"
Vera Yves lowered her head and continued to drink her soup, a crystalline tear falling into the bowl.
Vera stayed with The Yves Family for another week and still hadn’t received a call from Winston Valentine, but she did get a call from the hospital—Simon Warren had woken up.
Vera didn’t waste any time and went to Corvid with Seth Quinn and Linda Young.
The three of them had just entered the hospital lobby when someone brushed past her. With just a quick glance, Vera stopped in her tracks. Luke Shaw—what was he doing here?
Vera ran out, seeing no trace of him, but she was certain she hadn’t mistaken him.
Seth Quinn helped arrange things so Vera could enter the ward.
Simon Warren lay on the hospital bed, his eyes open but his gaze vacant.
The caregiver beside him explained, "The doctor said although he’s awake now, his brain is damaged and his IQ is about that of a five or six-year-old. We’ve already tried asking him questions but got nowhere."
"Besides me, has anyone else seen him today?"
The other person shook their head.
Could it be that Luke Shaw wasn’t there to see Simon Warren? Then why would he travel all the way here?
Vera walked to the bedside and held Simon Warren’s wrist. Instinctively, he retracted it.
Vera’s eyes shifted, she held his wrist firmly and began checking the pulse.
His heartbeat was fast, in contrast to the vacant look in his eyes. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
Vera tried to check the pulse on his other arm, but Simon Warren refused to cooperate, feeling very opposed.
Vera decided to give up. She was almost sure Simon Warren was pretending to be foolish.
Seth Quinn and Linda Young greeted her when she came out of the ward, "Did you find out anything?"
Vera shook her head and looked at Seth Quinn, "If he’s now considered mentally impaired, can he still be sentenced?"
"In his condition, even if sentenced, he would most likely be allowed to serve outside of prison." Seth Quinn lowered his voice, "Is he really clueless?"
Vera shook her head, "Doesn’t seem like it."
Linda Young sighed, "Then what should we do now?"
Vera’s gaze darkened; Luke Shaw’s presence here could not be a coincidence.
"As long as he’s not truly clueless, he’ll try to find a way to escape."
Seth Quinn nodded, "I’ll get a couple of people to keep an eye on him."
Vera then had the two accompany her to Simon Warren’s clinic, but the doors were locked. They went around to the back entrance, which was also locked.
"This door isn’t too high; it should be possible to climb over."
While speaking, she had already grabbed the door frame. Linda Young looked at her helplessly, "Vera Yves, do you think you’re still a high school student? Climbing such a tall door just like that."
Seth Quinn chuckled, "Climbing doors is more suitable for a guy like me."
Seth Quinn took off his coat, and Linda Young took it from him.
With agility, he climbed the door and jumped inside.
"Woof woof woof!"
The sound of dogs barking startled everyone.
Seth Quinn opened the latch from inside, allowing the two to enter smoothly.
Almost everything inside had already been moved out, leaving only unimportant items.
Vera looked around and picked up some remaining herbal medicine from the ground.
All the other rooms were locked, and they couldn’t get in.
Linda Young exclaimed, "This clinic’s backyard looks more like a large warehouse."
Vera carefully smelled the herbs in her hand, "This is indeed a large warehouse, and it’s also a processing plant."
Vera was mostly sure Simon Warren was involved in selling counterfeit herbal medicine.
The phone rang, and Vera walked to the side to answer it.
Zoe Monroe’s voice came through tearfully, "Vera, my grandpa received a critical notice from the hospital. Please come and save him, okay?"
Vera tightened her grip on the phone, "Don’t cry yet, what’s the situation?"
Zoe Monroe explained the condition of Old Master Monroe intermittently.
Old Master Monroe, at eighty years old, didn’t have many hobbies beyond drinking, but as he aged, his health declined, and the younger generation wouldn’t allow him to drink much.
A few days ago, while nobody was home, the old master drank half a liter of liquor secretly, to satisfy his craving, and ended up feeling unwell afterwards.
He was sent to the hospital, diagnosed with acute pancreatitis, and after days of treatment, his condition hadn’t improved at all. The hospital issued a critical notice, advising them to prepare mentally.
Zoe Monroe finally remembered Vera, "Vera, you can save my grandpa, right?"
Vera asked for details on Old Master Monroe’s onset, symptoms, and progress over the last few days, "Zoe, don’t worry. I’m out of town but will catch the next available flight back."
After hanging up, Vera wasted no time and the three of them rushed back to Imperia overnight.
Vera went straight to the hospital, where Zoe Monroe grabbed her arm like she was a lifesaver, "Vera, you’re finally here; my grandpa is saved now!"
Vera hadn’t said a word.
"Child, why are you messing around at a time like this?" Jonathan Monroe pulled Zoe Monroe behind him, his gaze on Vera distant and cold, "Zoey is indiscreet; sorry for the trouble of your unnecessary trip."
"Dad, Vera can definitely save grandpa..."
"Vera?" A richly dressed woman stepped forward; it was Miles Monroe’s mother, Penelope Langley.
Vera politely greeted, "Aunt Lana."
Penelope Langley nodded, her voice gentle, "Vera, Zoey is just too worried about her grandpa, so... don’t take it to heart. Don’t believe what she says."
Matthew Monroe looked disapprovingly at his sister, "Zoe Monroe, can’t you stop grasping at straws? Calling anyone you can find!"
The words froze the atmosphere, but they also clarified The Monroes’ attitude for Vera.
Vera remained poised, "Grandpa Monroe has taken good care of me in the past. He’s unwell and hospitalized now; it’s only right that I visit him."
Zoe Monroe started crying again in frustration, "The hospital issued a critical notice; if you don’t let Vera treat him, would you rather let grandpa wait for death inside?"
"Nonsense!" Matthew Monroe glared at her, "Uncle has already contacted foreign experts for consultation; the experts will be here soon; grandpa will be fine!"
Zoe Monroe wanted to say more.
The second wife of The Monroe Family, Ruby Shelby, grabbed Zoe Monroe’s hand, "Child, are you unhappy your grandpa is dying slowly? You’ll bring anyone to the hospital!"
"Mom!"
Vera clenched her fist.
Zoey spoke with grievance, "Why not just let Vera try?"
The corridor remained silent.
Matthew Monroe glared at Zoe Monroe with a stern look. The doctor had already advised them that the high mortality rate was typical for this illness, and Grandpa was so old, his life was hanging by a thread. Why insist on bringing someone in?
Bringing someone in was one thing, but bringing someone from The Yves Family? Everyone in Imperia knew all about The Yves Family’s mess.
If Grandpa really died, whose fault would it be?
"Just shut up! If Grandpa really encounters something serious, who will take responsibility?"
"I will!"
A tall figure approached from afar, dusty and exhausted.
