The X Guide-Chapter 114: Finding Khal (4)
Espers were respected, and even in their deaths, the institute always promised to give them a proper burial, even if the body was too unrecognizable.
Staff were not allowed to do anything to the bodies unless the said espers had contracts before their deaths.
Well, he only slapped the corpse. The man felt satisfied with that, but he smiled once more and slapped the corpse again.
Soon, his laughter resonated inside the room. The man glanced at his hand, which had slapped an esper, with glee in his eyes.
He looked extremely pathetic, but he was only elated with what he did. Unbeknownst to him, if one looked closely, the corpse’s fingers suddenly twitched.
If the man had seen it, he might have already fainted in fright. But he was still enjoying torturing a corpse. He laughed maniacally, and he soon looked at the corpse again.
As the body of a B-class esper, an ordinary person’s slap did not show any traces on his face. The man was jealous, but his eyes gleamed, thinking he could slap the corpse a few more times, and he would not be caught.
After all, a dead body could not file a report against him.
He took a deep breath, the adrenaline rushing through his head. The man felt so exhilarated. He then prepared to slap the corpse once more.
His lips grinned widely as the slap landed on the corpse’s face again. He suddenly did not want to stop and slap the corpse yet again. However, when he was about to slap the corpse again, the man flinched.
His eyes widened, a grin still plastered on his lips, though he was only frozen. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
The corpse, which he was just enjoying slapping, was suddenly... looking at him.
The corpse was looking at him.
Coldly.
It was a dead body.
But looking at him.
The corpse...
The man who was just having the time of his life began to tremble; his smile had faded. His breath slowed down, chest heaving.
He could not even scream from terror or speak... It was as though most of his body functions had stopped. A low whine left his mouth before the B-class esper’s body extended his hand and grabbed the man’s neck.
The man held the hand, struggling to break free, but he found he could not resist. The hand tightened around his neck, and tears sprang in the corners of his eyes.
The esper, who was only dead a minute ago, stared at the man struggling before him and casually glanced around. He then looked at his naked body before shifting again to the employee on the verge of death.
"I see," the esper spoke, but it was particularly hoarse and grating to the ears.
It was because the body had adjusted again, having most of its body functions stopped after his death.
The man trembled, his eyes rolled to the back, and his arms slowly fell to his side. His head leaned to the side, and he finally stopped struggling.
The B-class esper merely raised a brow and let go; the body fell to the ground with a thud.
The moment he glanced at his body, he could already tell that it was not his. His surroundings were also unfamiliar. He needed a few minutes to observe.
The B-class esper who was dead a minute ago was obviously Khal.
Khal swept his eyes around and concluded a few more things. This body was dead but came alive upon his arrival. Ayen and Devion were also not on his side.
It seemed that association building was far more abnormal than he thought. As he was lost in his thoughts, the door of the morgue opened.
"Sorry. I’m a little late because I listened to some news and..." He paused. The newcomer looked at the naked Khal and at his colleague on the floor.
He blinked, and he began to realize who was the one standing naked in front of him. His eyes look at the empty metal table. Before Khal could do anything to him, his eyes rolled to the back, and he fainted.
It was a small episode, and Khal did not even bother to kill him. He went to the drawers and put on some spare clothes and a white coat.
By the spare clothes, it was more the belongings of the dead espers. Khal had no qualms about it. It was not long, and he was already presentable enough to leave.
However, he did not immediately leave the morgue. This body was dead, and he could not just stride around as if nothing had happened. At least, in the vicinity of the institute, where some might recognize him.
Khal put on a new surgical mask. He only needed to wear it around the building. After doing so, he left the room, not caring about the mess he left behind.
He observed his surroundings, like Ayen and Devion; he began to search for the two. A few people noticed him and stared at him for a few seconds before they went to their duties.
When he finished his search, Khal quickly left the institute building after jumping from the second floor.
Khal threw the white coat in the trash but left the surgical mask on. He fixed his hair and became lost in thought.
Where could Ayen be? Devion?
Khal was worried about them, but he could not help but be concerned about Devion’s curse. It was a nasty curse; it would surely take advantage of Devion’s predicament.
Thinking so, Khal hoped the two had already found each other, or he could only search for Devion first. Of course, while doing so, he would still be on the lookout for Ayen.
The sun had already set when Khal walked in the streets. The crowds had lessened; most had gone home already. The street lamps began to light up.
Without observing the place, Khal had already confirmed that this was the abandoned town. He paused and looked up at the sky.
"Strange." Khal narrowed his eyes. His hands reached out to the surgical mask and removed it, and tossed it to the side.
Khal had already felt the restriction in his abilities. The body of a B-class esper was simple enough to accommodate his wavelength.
Although Khal’s wavelength was his own and not the original body’s wavelength. He knew the reason, as mana wavelengths were tied to each soul. A unique identification.
Surely, Ayen and Devion were the same.
It did not stop his sensitive senses from bypassing some restrictions imposed on him by this place.
He slowly continued to walk, his expressions not revealing any of his thoughts.
Inwardly, he had already become vigilant. The situation seemed tricky.
Someone or something... was observing him.
