Chapter 19: Ragebait

Luther sipped from his cup and stood up, the sound of shouts and punching brought back memories but also a feeling he almost forgot.

"Hey, what are you doing, come back here." Vess whispered but he ignored her and just kept walking. "Dammit, what is he thinking." She grabbed his sword and followed him outside.

There were two men fighting. And this was not some soft amateur fighting, these guys were skilled and were going at each other full force. Each blow drew blood and broke something but they continued on without losing momentum.

Luther leaned in to a man who was shouting, "what's going on here?"

The man looked at him surprised, "You don't know? You must be a traveler then. This is just the daily brawl. Two people put money and fight it out, winner takes all. It's a good way to earn money but also lose it. We also place bets on who we think is going-"

He cut him off, "That's enough, I understand now." Of course he understands, he spent his whole life fighting gangs and in illegal underground arenas. "Hey Vess, how much money do you have?"

"Not much, why...hold you are not planning to fight are you? Those people are skilled and no weapons are allowed, you can't win." Her words didn't reach as he simply held out his hand.

"Give me some coins." He asked, a smile on his face that she has never seen. She gave him two silver coins and he clutched them tightly. "Bet all the money you have on me." He said simply and walked towards the centre.

'Just what is he thinking.' She thought, not sure what to do. ' I can't waste my money, knowing that he is going to lose... this might be a good wake up call for him.'

He reached the centre where he found a man sitting at a table with jars of money. The man looked at him, "can I help you?" His tone was raspy and his eyes showed no interest in Luther.

"Yeah, I want to fight, here." He placed the coins on the table. "Who is my opponent?" He looked excited but the man was not impressed.

"Haah, look kid, this is not a place for messing around. Take that money back to your mom or wherever you stole it before you get yourself in trouble." He went back to counting money, hoping Luther would just leave.

"Huh? I guess not getting enough nutrients made you dumb." He said in a cocky tone.

"What did you just say, boy?" He slammed his hand on the table, causing everyone to stop and stare, even the fighters.

"What? Are your ears not working too? I am literally giving you money, why would you care about enough else? especially given the state of this place."

People didn't like his tone and started shouting at him.

"Fuck off kid!"

"Yeah, you think a weak little thing like you can handle this place?"

They kept on shouting, making Vess nervous but for Luther, this was going exactly as planned. 'Guess rage baiting also works here.' He thought with a smile.

"All I hear are a bunch of men afraid of getting their asses whooped by a 'kid'." It was working, the people were super pissed off at him that they wanted to jump him.

A man from the crowed approached and everyone instantly went silent. 'ohh? Look at them going silent. This guy must be boss around here... he sure is big.'

"I think you have said enough. I will accept you challenge, what do you say to that?" The man was big, at least 6,5 feet while Luther was only 5,9. People were mocking him now, seeing how he went quiet as him being scared but in reality, Luther was excited beyond belief.

"I like that... very much." He smiled at the man, a smile that was not suited for someone his age, it was like looking at those creepy hunters that took too much joy in killing monsters

'What's wrong with this kid? Is he drunk, why is he picking a fight he knows he won't win? Whatever, free money and boost in my reputation. I think tonight I will visit joy.'

The man counting the money was still pissed but he had no choice but to agree. "Very well. Everyone place your bids, Jungo, the undisputed champion of our section or..." He looked at Luther.

"Oh, Luth."

"Or Luth."

The jars on the table get replaced with new ones, one labelled Jungo and the other Luth. After the bids were all placed, no one bet on him, obviously. He expected that but still, it hurt his feelings a bit...well not really, it just pissed him off.

He glanced at Vess, a look that needed no words. She sighed and came forward, putting all their money on him. "You better win or Luna will be pissed."

"Just go, don't threaten me."

The crowd cleared a space in the center of the area, creating a makeshift fighting ring. Jungo cracked his massive knuckles, each joint popping like small branches breaking. Luther stood perfectly still, his small frame a stark contrast to the towering opponent.

He noticed the metal rings around Jungo's wrists, 'I wonder what those do, didn't I hear that no weapons allowed? Well whatever.'

As they faced each other, Luther's demeanor changed. Gone was the cocky teenager, replaced by something far more calculated. His eyes—sharp and cold—scanned Jungo's body, reading every subtle movement, every potential weakness.

"Sorry about this kid but when you run your mouth, you got to know that there are consequences." He charged first, a massive fist sailing through the air like a sledgehammer.

If that landed, it would definitely do some serious damage but this was a predictable move. Instead of dodging, Luther went straight into his opponent's range, ducked under the punch and hit him at the elbow with just enough force to make his whole arm feel limp.

"You have thick bones." He same, jumping back to create some distance, "You also pack a mean punch but that's all pointless if you can't hit your target." He went into a boxing stance, his eyes staring at the man like a predator ready to hunt.

"Are you really the champion here?"
