Chapter 81: Chapter 81: What Does That Mean?

She mumbled, her voice growing softer and softer, as if even the strength to complain was drained by sleepiness.

"I’m exhausted. I’m not talking to you anymore, I’m going to sleep."

She closed her eyes again and quietly added.

"I’m not staying up all night anymore, I have to take good care of myself."

Before she finished speaking, her breathing gradually slowed, becoming steady and long.

Her head lightly nudged against his chest, finding the most comfortable spot, and she completely drifted into dreamland.

Caleb Shaw’s hand was still frozen in mid-air, his fingertips trembling slightly.

He held his breath, looking down to confirm she was truly asleep.

And not testing, acting, or playing any tricks.

Only when her breathing was stable.

He finally let out a slow breath, his tensed shoulders gradually relaxing.

Yet a strange emptiness filled his heart, as if something was being filled, or something was lost.

That feeling was indescribable, mixed with a hint of reassurance.

He slowly, very carefully, lowered his hand, eventually resting it gently on her warm back.

Feeling the delicate warmth of her body under her clothes, he then slowly pulled her closer into his embrace.

Only at these times, when she was completely unaware, did he dare to let himself reveal a bit of his tender true feelings.

Holding her a little tighter, a little closer.

Just then, the Husky Army doctor walked quietly by, carrying a stack of medical records.

He originally wanted to come in to check Officer Shaw’s nighttime vitals, but at a glance, he saw the almost blindingly warm scene inside the tent.

Caleb Shaw, with his eyes closed, was holding Selene Kane tightly, his posture cautious.

The Husky Army doctor froze, his eyes widening in surprise.

Then he immediately reacted, tiptoeing away as quickly as possible.

As he walked, he mumbled to himself: "Aren’t they quite loving?"

"Just now, the way Officer Shaw looked at Miss Kane, where is the usual sternness?"

"That gaze was so sticky sweet, it could almost pull out threads."

"He seems a completely different person from the Commander on the battlefield."

"It looks like all those rumors outside are nonsense."

"Saying Officer Shaw is cold and indifferent to Miss Kane, that their marriage is just a political one in name only..."

"Now it seems outsiders just don’t understand their way of getting along."

But then the Husky Army doctor suddenly stopped, remembering something, and felt a chill down his spine.

"Wasn’t it this female who accidentally broke Officer Shaw’s leg on the training ground?"

"That hit was clean and swift, directly putting him in the hospital for three months, six months of rehab, and a lingering pain to this day."

"Is there really such a saying, the more you fight, the more you love?"

"Otherwise, how do you explain a woman who can break his leg is now held so tightly by him?"

"My dad always said, we Huskies are born to get hit, soft-hearted and kind."

"Destined to marry a fierce female, getting bullied every day but not daring to fight back."

"Could it be..."

"The wheels of fate have already started to turn?"

"No, please no..."

He murmured, looking utterly defeated while holding the medical records.

Caleb Shaw still lay there with his eyes closed, holding Selene Kane in his arms.

This was his first time truly holding her as he slept.

Her body felt incredibly light, soft and warm.

Yet such a fragile existence made him feel, for the first time, the weight in his arms so real.

His gaze was deep, eyes fixated on some point in the void.

His chin rested lightly on top of her head, her hair softly brushing his jaw, bringing a faint warmth.

When she lay on that hospital bed...

It must have hurt a lot, right...

He suddenly chuckled lightly in the silence.

He realized he had unknowingly picked up those people’s bad habits.

Clearly, he should focus on the mission, think about strategy.

But his mind was full of all sorts of random thoughts.

Especially about the details concerning her, always surfacing uncontrollably.

Selene Kane’s spiritual power was still gently soothing him.

The strength wasn’t strong, yet it was extremely delicate.

Unknowingly, he fell asleep beside her, his breathing becoming even and long.

He couldn’t remember the last time he had slept so peacefully.

In his dream, he returned to that familiar orchard.

Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, casting dappled shadows.

The little girl with pigtails stood under the tree, looking at him with wide eyes.

"Daddy, aren’t we picking any more fruit?"

Caleb Shaw smiled as he squatted down, reached out, and patted her head.

He suddenly noticed, the child looked a bit like him, and a bit like Selene Kane.

Those eyes were like his, clear black and white.

But that chubby little face was a miniature version of Selene Kane.

So cute that he couldn’t help but want to pinch it.

"We’ve picked enough; the fruit basket is almost full."

He pointed to the bulging little bamboo basket next to them and laughed.

"Enough to eat, we can come back tomorrow."

The little girl giggled, her eyes curving into crescents, and she jumped into his arms, her small hands hugging his neck tightly, playfully nuzzling: "I love Daddy the most! More than the whole world!"

Caleb Shaw held her, feeling the small, warm body in his arms, his heart filled to the brim.

He closed his eyes, his throat a little tight.

If only... 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

If only he could really have such a child.

To live with her in this orchard.

To see her smile and hear her call him Dad every day.

How wonderful that would be.

Even if only for a day, it would be enough for him to cherish for a lifetime.

At dawn, just as the sky was starting to lighten, a series of rooster crows shattered the morning stillness.

Forcing Selene Kane to wake up from her dreams.

She slowly opened her eyes, staring at the mottled ceiling, her gaze somewhat vacant.

"System, isn’t this too absurd?"

She murmured, her voice still hoarse from sleep.

"How can even a chicken become a Beastman? It’s one thing to crow at dawn, but just now it clearly called out ’Sunrise!’ in general language! How is this possible?"

"Host, you mustn’t engage in species discrimination."

The system’s tone was serious, yet it carried a trace of hidden amusement.

"As long as it’s an intelligent life form, it has the potential to become a Beastman, chickens included."

Caleb Shaw was still lying beside her, on his side, one arm loosely draped around her waist, sleeping soundly.

Selene Kane turned her head, quietly watching him.

She reached out her fingers, lightly tracing his brow, nose, and lips.

When he was asleep, that usual cold, hard aura that made others keep their distance vanished completely.

Instead, he seemed to exude a strangely forlorn air.

"With a face like this," she couldn’t help but mutter softly, "couldn’t he earn two hundred bucks a minute as a model? The kind where they charge by the second."

"Host, then you made a big profit last night."

The system’s voice carried a hint of laughter.

"He stayed still and let you touch him for over two thousand seconds, according to your calculation, that’s equivalent to earning over forty thousand Federation Coins."

Selene Kane listened, completely puzzled, her brow slightly furrowed, her eyes filled with confusion.

"Huh? What do you mean? What are you even talking about?"
