Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Will Take Good Care

Though his hair and beard are gray, his face lined with age.

Yet his eyes are bright, his gaze like lightning.

Even when standing still.

"Selene?"

His voice trembled slightly.

"You’ve really come back? I thought... you’d never return."

Selene Kane’s eyes grew warm, but her smile grew sweeter.

She stepped forward and pulled Caleb Shaw’s hand, leading him to the elder.

"Of course I had to come back! I’ve been thinking about it for so long. I have to bring my Beast Husband to meet the elders. You all didn’t come to the wedding back then, so this is just to make up for it, right? Even an ugly son-in-law has to meet the father-in-law. It’s tradition!"

Caleb Shaw wore a crisp uniform, with epaulets shining coldly.

His eyebrows were sharp like they were carved, his nose tall and straight, his jawline strong and stern.

The most striking were those eyes.

Deep green pupils, calm without a trace of warmth.

The elder’s heart jolted, his knees trembled, almost losing his balance when he saw him.

Having lived his whole life struggling in the slums, what tough characters hadn’t he seen?

Yet the oppressive aura unique to someone like Caleb Shaw, he knew all too well.

He became elder not just because of physical strength, but also because of deft handling of affairs.

He could help any family in need of food.

If trouble arose, he could suppress it, with connections above, and respect below, able to handle things inside and out.

But now, he stiffened, his limbs weak, trembling like a shrimp freshly pulled from boiling water.

"Com-Commander..."

His lips trembled, using all his strength just to squeeze out those few words.

Selene Kane immediately sensed something wrong, hurriedly holding the elder’s arm, gently patting his back, her tone soft.

"Elder, don’t be afraid. Don’t be nervous. Since he became my male, that means he’s a son-in-law of the slums, one of us. You’ve always treated me like a daughter, with care and protection. Now, see him as a son-in-law, don’t treat him as an outsider."

The elder raised his head with difficulty, sneaking a glance at Caleb Shaw.

The man remained expressionless, his gaze indifferent.

Neither denying Selene Kane’s words nor responding, just standing quietly.

Yet this silence made the elder more nervous, sweat streaming coldly.

He dared not rashly acknowledge this "son-in-law’s" identity.

All he could do was grip Selene Kane’s hand tightly, as if holding onto his only support.

He looked left and right, repeatedly confirming whether the person before him was the mischievous little girl he remembered.

"You’re still the same... clever and quirky since childhood, with twisted logic no one could refute. Now married, still just as happy, eyes sparkling... seems life is treating you well."

Selene Kane smiled, her eyes crescent-shaped, dimples forming deeply on her cheeks.

"Yes, all my Beast Husbands are reliable, considerate, treating me particularly well. They compete for housework, rush to carry luggage when going out, and even when I say no, they insist on giving me delicious treats. Life is really pleasant, like celebrating New Year every day!"

Caleb Shaw’s originally stern face remained impassive.

But only he knew, inside him surged tumult.

Only he knew the truth of their married life.

The so-called "pleasant life" was a mere façade.

The female was stubborn, short-tempered, throwing things at the slightest provocation.

The Beast Husbands competed openly and subtly, never a day of peace at home.

He originally thought she’d use this chance to vent her grievances before the clan, maybe even complain.

But she didn’t.

Instead, she showed satisfaction, her smile full.

Caleb Shaw’s hand beside him slightly clenched, nails lightly digging into his palm.

This female was far more enigmatic than he imagined.

He looked at her, his gaze slowly changing, the coldness buried deep in his heart.

The prejudices within him began to waver.

He no longer felt she was just a noisy female, no longer thought her liveliness was mere restlessness.

On the contrary, he began to sense the warmth in her laughter.

At this moment, it truly felt as simple as accompanying her back home.

His fingers unconsciously rubbed the cuff of his uniform.

So this was where she grew up, this corner forgotten by The Empire.

"Elder."

The corners of Selene Kane’s mouth curved, revealing a sly smile.

Her visit wasn’t just for reminiscence, or simply to convey peace.

Bringing someone like Caleb Shaw here.

If not to conduct some little tests, probe his depths.

Wouldn’t it be a wasted chance?

She didn’t want this guy to think of her lifelong as merely a "female needing protection."

"Finally coming back, let’s gather all the uncles and aunts who took care of me before."

Her tone was light.

"Growing up eating food from a hundred families, whenever someone cooked meat soup, they would bring me a bowl. Now that I’ve achieved something, I must thank them in person."

"Let everyone see I’m doing well now, as reassurance."

She paused, her tone softened.

"If not for their support, I wouldn’t have grown up warmly and safely. Without them, I would’ve frozen to death on some snowy night long ago."

The elder’s eyes turned red upon hearing, his eyes instantly dampened.

He nodded vigorously, his voice slightly hoarse.

"Good, excellent! Selene has goodwill! I’ll arrange this, and if anyone dares not come, I’ll whip them!"

As he spoke, he patted his chest twice heavily.

Caleb Shaw panicked, his face slightly pale.

He instinctively wanted to refuse, to say it’s unsuitable both status-wise and time-wise.

But before he could speak up, the elder roared.

The metal walls of the slums buzzed and hummed from the roar.

"Selene Kane is back! And she brought the Commander! Everyone, come over and gather loudly!"

The voice was full of vigor.

Soon, Beastmen from all directions squeezed through dilapidated doors, climbed over rusted fences, and sprinted across muddy ground.

The elderly with canes, the young barefoot, even wandering Beastmen from neighboring alleys came in droves.

Hearing Selene Kane had returned home with the Star Commander, everyone was excited beyond measure.

"Oh my, this is the Commander? He looks even more spirited than the photos on StarNet!"

An elderly Beastwoman squinted, tiptoeing and marveling as she looked Caleb Shaw up and down.

"How are things between you and Selene? When will you have children?"

A burly man slapped Caleb Shaw’s shoulder, grinning widely, showing two rows of white teeth.

"It’s been too long since a celebration in the slums, this is a major event!"

"Oh my, both of your genes are so good, your future kids will definitely be beauties."

Another middle-aged female holding a baby leaned in, her eyes shining.

"Pointed ears, cold eyes, walks with flair, surely growing to be a heartthrob!"

The extended family, uncles, aunts, surrounded them in layers.

Their enthusiasm was overwhelming.

Caleb Shaw, sweating on his forehead, ears burning, wanted to escape but didn’t dare push anyone.

They were all Selene Kane’s family, though he was always poised and composed, he couldn’t be rude.

He braced himself to respond to each one.

"I’ll take good care of her."
