Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Playing Innocent

Alza’s eyes suddenly lit up.

The Little Fox’s eyes glistened, a wet sheen radiating an incredulous joy.

Even the corners of his eyes exuded an enchanting allure, a natural charm that captivated the heart, unrelated to romance or the moon.

His tail unconsciously swayed slightly.

"Really? Can I go home with you now?"

His voice trembled slightly, as if afraid he misheard, or that it was all just a dream.

He had waited for this day too long, almost giving up hope.

He leaned forward slightly, wanting to get close to Selene, but sneakily glanced at Caleb Shaw.

He had already noticed this male earlier.

This was a low-class social venue in The Fringe.

Usually frequented by idle wanderers.

They always followed the rules, rarely stepping foot in such a place.

Even with the brim of his hat lowered, he recognized him at a glance.

"But... if Selene takes me back, won’t the Commander be unhappy?"

He cautiously asked.

He knew Selene Kane’s status was now extraordinary, and he knew that this "Commander" was no ordinary person.

He didn’t want to be a bother, nor cause trouble after just being saved.

Selene raised an eyebrow, muttering in her heart.

Another one who acts obedient.

Appearing timid and weak on the outside, but actually, with a mind full of schemes.

Asking whether Caleb Shaw would be happy, while actually probing her attitude.

She chuckled lightly, not exposing him.

"No, he’s got a good temper."

She intentionally made her tone relaxed.

"He’ll be your brother from now on."

Alza immediately sweetly called out, "Hello, brother."

Caleb Shaw’s face instantly darkened, his brow furrowing, and his gaze cold as ice.

He didn’t expect this person to be so adept at getting along.

What annoyed him even more was that Selene could still smile.

The household already had Zane, a troublemaker with unclear origins.

Jumping around all day, bringing a bunch of trouble at the slightest provocation.

And now another one is being squeezed in?

A fox spirit who looks harmless but is actually naturally seductive?

Is she out of her mind?

Or does she not consider his position at all?

He clenched the teacup in his hand, a nameless fire slowly rising in his heart.

Previously, he would at least put on a show, using some high-sounding excuses to cover up.

Like "the atmosphere is tense lately" or "the time is not right".

Now, they don’t even bother with the most basic facades.

Openly recruiting people.

The room’s atmosphere instantly cooled.

Alza’s smile could no longer hold.

He was angry.

Not just because he was belittled, but because of the feeling of being treated as an insignificant person, like a fine needle piercing the heart, silently yet painfully.

Selene suddenly burst into laughter.

She gently raised her hand and rubbed Alza’s head.

"His words are sharp, always with thorns, but inside he’s actually soft-hearted, softer than anyone."

Her tone was light, with a bit of certainty.

"Don’t mind him, that’s just how his temper is, that’s Caleb Shaw for you."

Alza obediently nodded, his eyes sparkling.

He leaned into her palm, slightly tilting his head.

"I understand, Selene,"

he whispered, without a hint of resentment in his voice.

"I come from a humble background, always scurrying around the streets and alleys, surviving by scavenging for scraps. It’s been sheer luck that I lasted this long."

He paused, a hint of a bitter smile on his lips. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

"Now being with you feels like a treasure falling from the sky, hitting someone like me, a nobody. If this isn’t a blessing from the heavens, then what is it?"

"It’s only natural for your brothers to look down on me, thinking I’m not good enough for you."

He lifted his gaze, clear and resolute.

"I’ll behave, not act recklessly, not compete, and definitely not cause you trouble. Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do it."

This child’s mind is agile, and he’s thoughtful, needing no repeated reminders.

His words and actions are perfectly balanced, neither overstepping boundaries nor being distant.

Selene looked at him, feeling an inexplicable relief.

Leaving him behind was comforting because he wasn’t impulsive or reckless.

Instead, he knew when to advance or retreat, discerning what’s important.

The Little Fox was inherently likable, with bright eyes and a smile always on his lips.

Even in silence, there was a cleverness about him.

If the ancestors blessed him one day, manifesting a Nine-Tails, awakening ancient bloodlines, awakening the Spirit Root, embarking on a cultivation path...

Wouldn’t that mean he could cultivate into an immortal?

From then on, soaring through the clouds, controlling the wind and rain, never needing to live by anyone’s mercy?

Selene chuckled softly, her shoulders shaking with an innocent laugh.

She laughed like a child who just stole a candy.

Caleb Shaw gave her a cold glance, his gaze as sharp as a knife, filled with undisguised disdain.

He knit his brows, turned, and walked away, the sound of his boots hitting the ground with a dull thud.

He couldn’t be bothered with her foolish antics anymore.

Since deciding to take responsibility for Alza completely...

Selene settled down, sitting by the bed, chatting with him for a while.

Talking about trivial matters, sharing stories from outside, throwing in a few jokes, trying to get him to relax.

Until she saw his expression improve, the tightness between his eyebrows ease.

The shadows in his eyes gradually dispersed, and his emotions finally stabilized.

She then slowly stood up, dusting off her pants.

"Let’s go, we’re going to see the Chief."

Caleb Shaw didn’t want to mess with her any longer, standing at the door with his arms crossed, face cold.

His lips tightened, his tone icy.

"It’s unsafe here at night, the patrols have been withdrawn, wild dogs roam in packs. Who knows if there are black market spies lying in wait. You should head back."

Selene stretched, her bones making a slight cracking sound.

Then, she yawned long and hard, a tear slipping from the corner of her eye.

She didn’t pay him any mind, walking forward by herself.

"You’re the Commander, in charge of thousands of troops, afraid of a few petty thugs?"

She glanced back at him, eyebrow raised, a hint of provocation in her gaze.

"Why not quit and soothe babies, rock cradles, sing lullabies? It’d suit you perfectly."

Caleb Shaw clammed up again, jaw tight, his Adam’s apple moving up and down once.

Whenever he talked with her, he always felt like he couldn’t exert his strength, his words being effortlessly countered by her, leaving him stifled yet helpless.

They stopped at a relatively well-kept house.

The walls were coated with fresh plaster, and the door frame had been refastened.

A string of wind chimes hung at the door, tinkling as the wind blew by.

Selene lifted her hand to knock, her knuckles tapping softly on the wooden door, the sound clear despite its gentleness, "Chief, it’s me, Selene’s back."

A roar of excitement echoed, causing dust from the rooftop to fall down in cascades.

Soon after, heavy footsteps drew near.

The Chief’s massive silhouette slowly approached from the side.

In his true form, he was a tiger over two meters long, large and muscular.

His fur was covered with overlapping scars from years past.

Those once majestic black stripes had been torn and scattered.

The entire tiger appeared both mighty and desolate.

As he reached Selene, a faint mist suddenly rose around him, bones cracking and his form rapidly shrinking, the fur retreating.

A moment later, it transformed into an elder appearing around sixty.
