Chapter 393: Chapter 395: Winning Her Back

"What I mean is... would Mona be willing to accept Uncle Dawson as your father? If you don’t like it, Mommy will take you and we’ll move."

Victor Vance’s voice was still gentle as she patiently asked for Nathan Lynch’s opinion.

Nathan Lynch looked up, stunned for a moment. He squeezed Victor Vance’s hand, his eyes welling up with tears. "Mom, Mona wants you to be happy."

Victor Vance was visibly moved. "Having you is all Mommy needs to be happy." She reached out and carefully wiped away Nathan Lynch’s tears. "Why are you suddenly crying?"

"I don’t know..." Tears slid down Nathan Lynch’s cheeks. He lowered his head slightly, using his hand to cover his face. "I don’t want to cry, but I think it’s because I’m too happy."

He walked over and hugged Victor Vance, wrapping his arms around her neck. "Mom, if you like Uncle Dawson, then you should be with him. I really like Uncle Dawson, too. He’s a very good-natured person."

Victor Vance held Nathan Lynch tightly, still hesitant in her heart.

’She certainly liked Aidan Dawson, but her son’s place in her heart was still higher. Right now, with just her son, she could give him all her love. But if she chose to remarry, you could never be sure about the future. If they had a second child, the attention Mona received would diminish greatly, and she couldn’t imagine how sad he would be...’

Victor Vance gently patted Nathan Lynch’s shoulder and sighed softly.

Aidan Dawson carefully placed the diamond ring into his breast pocket. He was sure there would be a time to use it, and that day wouldn’t be far off.

Thinking back on the scene from just now, a smile appeared on his face for no particular reason.

His phone rang. Aidan Dawson answered it. "Mom?"

"I guess you could say it was a success... but not really. She said she needs to think about it. I don’t want to push her too hard, so I’ll wait for her to agree." A smile spread across Aidan Dawson’s face. The breeze ruffled his hair, and his smile grew wider and wider. "After all these years, we finally have a chance to be together. This must be a wonderful surprise from heaven."

Arriving at the underground parking garage, he had just opened his car door when his brow suddenly furrowed.

’Something’s not right...’

"Mom, are we packing our things right now?"

"Yes." Victor Vance bent down to speak to Nathan Lynch. "Mona, don’t worry. We’re just moving. Mommy found another, better house. We won’t change your kindergarten, so Mona can still play with all his little friends."

Nathan Lynch clutched his toy. "Why are we suddenly moving? What about Uncle Dawson...?"

Victor Vance said, "Uncle Dawson is just our friend. No friend stays with you as a neighbor forever. Besides, having Mommy is enough for Mona, isn’t it?" Victor Vance reached out and gently stroked Nathan Lynch’s little face, comforting him. "Don’t be sad. After we finish moving, Mommy will take you to the zoo. Didn’t you say you really wanted to see the big tigers?"

Nathan Lynch nodded slowly.

Suddenly, her phone rang. Victor Vance looked at the caller ID. After a moment of conflict, she chose not to answer, letting it ring.

Nathan Lynch reminded her, "Mom, your phone is ringing."

"It’s nothing." Victor Vance kept her head down, continuing to write on her list.

The ringing stopped a minute and a half later. Victor Vance let out a sigh of relief, but at the same time, felt a pang of melancholy. She knew full well the importance of making a clean break. Nothing in the world is perfect; you always have to make choices.

All was quiet for a moment, and then suddenly, the phone rang again.

On the fifth call, Victor Vance chose to answer. "Aidan." 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

She was met with Aidan Dawson’s anxious voice. He was panting slightly, his tone a mixture of relief. "Victor, you finally answered. Were you busy just now? I didn’t mean to bother you. I... I’m outside your house right now. Can you open the door for me? I... I have something I need to talk to you about."

"Aidan, I think... you should just go home. Don’t come looking for me anymore. I’m planning to move with Mona. I... I’ve found another, better place."

"...What? Victor... why..." Aidan Dawson’s voice came from the other end, sounding somewhat broken. He suddenly mustered his courage. "I... I have one more thing to say. Please, just open the door? I said I would respect your wishes, but Victor, I really have more to say. Please open the door for me. I have something very important to tell you."

Victor Vance clutched her phone tightly. "Aidan, I’ve already made up my mind. Please go home."

The voice on the other end became exceptionally surprised and dejected. "Why..."

Victor Vance hung up the phone directly. The moment she looked up, she realized her eyes were moist.

"Mom..." Nathan Lynch walked over and hugged Victor Vance, as if wanting to comfort her. "Mom, you like Uncle Dawson. Why won’t you be with him?"

"Because..." Victor Vance choked back a sob. "Because Mommy has someone she cares about more."

Nathan Lynch looked up at her, his big eyes filled with confusion. He didn’t understand what Victor Vance was saying, but he still reached out to wipe away her tears. "Don’t cry, Mom. When Mona grows up, he can take care of you."

"Okay." Victor Vance hugged Nathan Lynch tightly.

Victor Vance had always been a woman of action. She quickly had the house staff pack their luggage. They hadn’t been living there long, so there wasn’t much to pack.

Victor Vance left the house, holding Nathan Lynch’s hand. As they were crossing the garden, she suddenly heard a rustling sound.

Nathan Lynch peeked forward and asked, "Who’s there?"

Aidan Dawson emerged from the garden. His suit was covered in dirt, and there was a leaf stuck in his hair.

Nathan Lynch asked with concern, "Uncle Dawson, did you fall down? Are you okay?"

"I’m okay." Aidan Dawson was clearly embarrassed to have appeared before her in such a disheveled state.

Victor Vance looked at the high wall behind Aidan Dawson, then at him limping toward them. "You climbed over the wall?"

The garden was the area between the two villas.

Aidan Dawson walked over, scratching his head. "I’m sorry. I had no other choice. I was just afraid that if I didn’t come over this time, I wouldn’t get another chance."

He took off his glasses and said with a wry smile, "I was wondering why I couldn’t see clearly. Turns out the lens is cracked."

Aidan Dawson squinted, making out the suitcase Victor Vance was holding. His heart suddenly tightened. "Victor, where are you going? Are you taking Mona and moving?"

Victor Vance calmly took a step back with Nathan Lynch, avoiding his eyes this time. "Yes."

Aidan Dawson had his answer. His greatest fear had become a reality. His eyes widened slightly.

"...I’m truly sorry, Aidan. Let’s get together some other time."

In the instant she brushed past him, Aidan Dawson grabbed Victor Vance’s hand.

"I know what you’re worried about."
