Chapter 391: Chapter 393: Meeting the Parents

"Little Mike is so adorable! He must be six or seven this year, right? Look at those big eyes—you can tell he’s a clever one!"

Victor Vance looked a bit reserved. She nodded slightly and said, "Ma’am." Then, she turned to Nathan Lynch beside her. "This is Uncle Dawson’s mother, your Grandma Lee."

"Hello, Grandma," Nathan Lynch replied obediently.

Yvonne Lee beamed, her smile bright and cheerful. "What perfect timing!" she exclaimed. "Come on, let’s go back to my place for dinner."

Victor Vance looked hesitant.

"Mom..." Aidan Dawson started, "maybe not today. She..."

Seeing Aidan Dawson stammer, Yvonne Lee, frustrated by his incompetence, marched over and twisted his ear. "I knew it! You completely failed, didn’t you? Did you even give her a proper invitation? You’re a grown man! How can you mess up something so simple? You clearly didn’t inherit a single ounce of your mother’s brilliance!"

Victor Vance spoke up to explain, "That’s not it, Ma’am. Please don’t blame him."

Yvonne Lee’s face lit up with a huge smile. "So, does that mean you’ll come home with us for dinner?"

Victor Vance glanced at Aidan Dawson. Seeing the hopeful look in his eyes, she finally nodded.

Overjoyed, Yvonne Lee led them away.

"Yvonne, where are you off to? Aren’t you staying to play a bit longer?"

Yvonne Lee waved her hand. "No more, I’m done for today! My son is bringing his daughter-in-law home!!"

The tips of Aidan Dawson’s ears turned red. He cleared his throat. "Junior Sister, about my mom... please don’t take what she said to heart."

The Dawson family was well-known and wealthy in the region. Mr. and Mrs. Dawson lived in an affluent neighborhood in the city center.

As she pushed open the door, Yvonne Lee was already on the phone. "Our daughter-in-law and grandson are here! Get back here, quick! We’re just waiting for you. If you’re late, you’ll have me to answer to!"

The villa was huge, but there were only a few servants. Aidan Dawson explained, "My mom doesn’t like the house to be too bustling with people. Plus, she prefers to do things herself, from cooking to watering the plants. My dad helped her plant the flowers in the backyard, and she’s in charge of watering them."

Yvonne Lee brought out a few plates of fruit, and a servant helped pour the tea.

Yvonne Lee smiled and sat across from them. "Have some fruit. Dinner’s ready, but we’ll eat once your father gets home. He’s a bit particular—if we don’t wait, he’ll start grumbling the moment he walks in, and it gives me a splitting headache."

Three minutes later, Yvonne Lee had already lost all her patience. She stood up. "Your father and his dawdling, he’ll never change." She smiled. "Come on, let’s go to the dining room and eat without him."

Victor Vance held Nathan Lynch’s hand, still feeling a bit dazed. Aidan Dawson’s mother’s attitude was completely beyond her expectations; she was being so incredibly kind.

The dining room table was laden with a feast. Victor Vance was surprised. "You’ve prepared so much food! You’ve gone to so much trouble, Ma’am."

"It’s no trouble at all! If you really want to thank me, Sonny, then you and Mona just have to eat a lot."

Victor Vance sat down with Nathan Lynch. Across from them, Yvonne Lee started introducing the dishes on the table, explaining that they were all her specialties, made from secret family recipes that no one else could replicate. Not only that, but she had even turned the names of the dishes into a song, which she then sang with surprising rhyme.

When she finished her song, Nathan Lynch clapped his little hands. Victor Vance applauded as well. "That was wonderful, Ma’am."

Yvonne Lee was absolutely delighted. She walked over and gently stroked Nathan Lynch’s cheek. "See? Sonny and Mona have some taste, unlike that blockhead son of mine. Every time I sing, he just stands there like a statue with no reaction at all."

"Mom..." A resigned smile appeared on Aidan Dawson’s face. "I’m not as clueless as you make me out to be."

As he said this, he began to applaud stiffly.

His awkwardness made her laugh. "You’d better go home and practice your clapping. If you can’t do it right, don’t you dare tell anyone you’re my son. I’d be too embarrassed."

Yvonne Lee urged everyone to start eating, but Victor Vance smiled and said, "Maybe we should wait for Uncle to get back so we can all eat together."

Aidan Dawson chimed in, "Yeah, that’ll save us from him being grumpy when he gets home."

"He’s always so difficult." Despite her words, Yvonne Lee put down her chopsticks. "Fine, we’ll give him a little longer. But let’s be clear: ten minutes, tops. If he’s not back by then, he can’t blame us for starting. It’s his own fault for being as slow as a snail."

Victor Vance smiled. "Okay."

At the dinner table, Yvonne Lee began sharing funny stories from Aidan Dawson’s childhood. She roared with laughter when she got to the part about him being driven to tears by piano lessons. "He absolutely refused to practice, saying it was too hard and tiring. So I gave him one lollipop, and he was suddenly full of energy again."

Nathan Lynch asked curiously, "Did Uncle Dawson cry a lot when he was little?"

"Oh, you have no idea! Don’t be fooled by how cold and aloof he seems now. He was a total crybaby as a kid. He’d cry if he had too much homework, cry if he couldn’t finish it, cry because he couldn’t get the hang of the piano... sometimes he’d even cry just because it was raining."

Nathan Lynch nodded in agreement. "Then Uncle Dawson really was a crybaby when he was little."

Victor Vance couldn’t help but smile.

Aidan Dawson couldn’t stop himself from cutting in. "That was so long ago! Mom, can you please stop telling embarrassing stories about me?"

"Alright, alright, I get it. I should help you save some face in front of your future wife."

Just as Victor Vance was about to say something, she heard approaching footsteps.

"Howard, you’re finally home."

Howard Dawson walked over. He wore a pair of elegant glasses, had a beard, and a warm smile on his face.

"So sorry for being late." He asked with a kindly smile, "Sonny and Mona are here? Welcome. I do apologize, the traffic was heavy, so I’m a little late. I hope I haven’t kept you waiting long."

Victor Vance said, "Not at all, Uncle. You’re too kind."

Howard Dawson sat down next to Yvonne Lee and began his apology. "Darling, the traffic was just awful. I even had the driver speed up. You’ll forgive me, won’t you?"

"I’ll forgive you this time. But don’t be so reckless again. Safety first!"

"Yes, of course, of course," Howard Dawson quickly agreed.

The table was filled with laughter and cheerful conversation as Yvonne Lee continuously placed more food into Victor Vance’s and Mona’s bowls.

Victor Vance looked at the food piled high in her bowl like a small mountain, and an indescribable feeling welled up inside her.

The disapproval and tough questions she had braced herself for never materialized. Instead, their overwhelming enthusiasm left her even more bewildered.

Victor Vance lowered her head and suddenly coughed a few times.

Aidan quickly patted her on the back. "Junior Sister, are you alright? Here, have some water."

Victor Vance looked up and shook her head. "I’m fine, Senior Brother."

Yvonne Lee said, "Quick, quick, drink some warm water. You’ll feel much better after some warm water."

"It’s all your fault for making the food so delicious, Ma’am. I ate too quickly and choked," Victor Vance said with a slight smile, covering her mouth.

"Eat slowly, slowly. If you want more, I’ll cook for you anytime. It breaks my heart to see you choke."
