Chapter 387: Chapter 389: The Ungrateful Scoundrel

"That ungrateful bastard!" Leo Lennox spat venomously. "No one else would do this. The modified will benefits him the most!"

Naomi Kenway’s fingers trembled as she took the phone. Seeing the familiar handwriting on the screen, she could barely hold back the urge to cry.

Her eyes swept over the comparison of the two images, and she frowned slightly.

Leo Lennox said, "At first glance, there’s nothing wrong. The person who forged the handwriting is extremely skilled. I had to compare them carefully many times before I noticed the discrepancy."

He calmed down a little and said in a low voice, "However, a handwriting comparison alone is not enough to prove whether the will is real or fake. I can tell this wasn’t written by Rose because I’ve known her for decades and am very familiar with her writing habits, but that’s not the case for outsiders. To prove the will from back then was a fake, we need to gather more direct evidence, but..."

Leo Lennox frowned and sighed. "It’s been so long since it happened. The person who left the note hasn’t contacted me in a very long time. I’m afraid finding conclusive evidence will be very, very difficult."

Naomi Kenway looked up, gripping the phone in her hand. Her voice was firm. "No matter how difficult it is, I have to find out the truth. I can’t let my mom rest uneasy in her grave."

A look of relief appeared in Leo Lennox’s eyes. He stood up, patted Naomi Kenway’s shoulder, and said repeatedly, "Good, good. Good girl. If Rose could see your determination, I’m sure she would be so relieved."

His eyes seemed to well up with tears. "You used to be so impulsive and reckless, I was always worried about you. Now, I can finally see that you’ve grown up. I used to worry about what would happen if I were gone one day. How could I leave you all alone? With so many people bullying you, you have no idea how much you’d suffer..."

Naomi Kenway interrupted him. "Uncle Lennox, you’re going to live a long and healthy life. I was immature before and did a lot of stupid things. From now on, I’ll take good care of you. My mom is gone. You and Ian are the only family I have left. We all have to be okay."

Hearing Naomi Kenway’s words, Leo Lennox took out a handkerchief and wiped the corners of his eyes. "Yes, yes..."

After comforting Leo Lennox for a while, Naomi Kenway walked out of the villa. She looked up at the deep blue sky and let out a soft breath, her eyes stinging slightly.

She took out her phone and called the butler, asking him to find her a few highly competent private investigators.

The car crash back then had happened so suddenly. The car had exploded and burst into flames. Because it was in a remote suburban area, Rose Kenway’s body was never found. All that remained at the scene was the charred, blackened frame of the car, a testament to just how horrific the crash had been.

Naomi Kenway paused, then arranged for some people to investigate the suburban area.

After what had happened, she had avoided that suburban area at all costs. The moment she set foot there, a deep-seated fear would well up inside her, and she would subconsciously reject the place.

But she couldn’t hide anymore. She had to get to the bottom of what happened all those years ago!

Although there was no concrete evidence pointing directly to Jackson Kensington as the forger, it couldn’t have been anyone else. When the will was announced back then, everyone’s jaw dropped. Rose Kenway’s will stated that all her shares and real estate were to be inherited by her husband. Her daughter, who she had always doted on and was expected to inherit the family fortune, seemed to have been forgotten, not even mentioned in the will. After the will was made public, many praised Rose Kenway for her deep love for her husband, calling them a model couple. But not long after Rose’s death, Jackson Kensington welcomed Lorraine Warren into the family, and public opinion shifted. People began to say Jackson was heartless and had betrayed Rose’s deep affection.

’If Rose Kenway had really written a will that was so incredibly favorable to Jackson Kensington, then why would he go to the trouble of obtaining a forgery? All suspicion points to him.’

"Really? He really agreed to get engaged to you?" Jackson Kensington asked in disbelief, his heart soaring with elation.

Jeanette Kensington nodded shyly. She lowered her head slightly and said, "I didn’t expect him to suddenly propose to me either. He said he wanted to get engaged to me soon."

Jackson Kensington nodded repeatedly in praise. "Excellent, excellent! I knew it! How could a man resist our Jeanette, so talented and beautiful?" Jackson threw his head back and laughed, looking utterly delighted. "You’re truly my wonderful, caring daughter, finding me such a capable son-in-law!"

"We can’t delay! I’ll have someone look for an auspicious date for the engagement right away. We have to throw a magnificent engagement party!"

Hearing this last part, Jeanette Kensington’s voice fell. "He said he doesn’t want a big one."

"What?!" Jackson Kensington slammed his hand on the table. "What does he mean by that? Getting all timid about an engagement? Is he looking down on Jackson Kensington’s daughter? If he doesn’t want to marry you, fine! The line of men chasing my daughter could stretch from here to the ends of the earth!"

Jeanette Kensington explained, "Dad, don’t be angry. That’s not what Caleb meant. It’s like this: he said he wants a cozy engagement party. He’s always been very lonely, and he hopes that on an important day like this, it can feel warmer. He said having too many people would just make it feel cold and impersonal. Only our parents will attend the engagement party. His parents from the countryside are his adoptive parents, and they were very bad to him, so the only ones attending will be you and Mom."

This explanation somewhat quelled Jackson Kensington’s anger.

"Dad, don’t be mad at him. He suffered so much when he was a child, and he was always looked down on in school..." Jeanette Kensington’s heart ached for him. "Back then, he got into the Capital Academy of Arts on his own merit, but because he had no connections, he was bullied constantly. The more outstanding he was, the more those good-for-nothing rich kids who relied on their family’s money would ridicule him!" Jeanette said indignantly.

"He said he hopes his engagement party will be a warm affair, with no business involved. I’ve already agreed."

Jackson Kensington’s expression was complicated. Hadn’t he walked a similar path all those years ago? Although he hadn’t suffered much scorn from others, he was just a poor boy from the countryside. His family had been destitute for generations. He still remembered the shock he felt when he first arrived in Veridia—a tremor that came from the depths of his soul. His heart had quivered as he gazed at the towering skyscrapers.

"Sigh. Since you’ve already agreed..." Jackson Kensington paused, then asked, "Did your mother agree?"

Jeanette Kensington nodded. "Mom said she’s fine with it as long as I’m happy."

Jackson Kensington nodded slowly. "In that case, let’s do it your way, you young folks."

Jeanette Kensington and Caleb Bishop’s engagement party was arranged in a great hurry, as the auspicious date Caleb had personally chosen was only ten days away. In the vast, empty banquet hall sat just a few people. Jackson Kensington and Lorraine Warren were all smiles, looking as if they were about to weep with joy.

Jeanette Kensington cried too. The love she had waited for for so many years was finally hers.

After the engagement, Jeanette Kensington went to a party and realized that many people in their social circle had no idea she and Caleb Bishop were engaged.
